An Open Letter to Williams Grove Speedway

Dear Williams Grove Speedway,

I am writing you this morning in regards to your announcer Bruce Ellis on behalf of the 358 division and all of the drivers, race teams, and sponsors in the division. I'm not sure if you realize this or not but your announcer Mr. Bruce Ellis has been disrespecting the 358 division for sometime. I noticed last year when I was there or a race with my family, (I don't get up to the track as much as I used to) , that Mr. Ellis would not announce the sponsors of the 358 division, but would tell me everything but which energy drink the drivers in the 410 division have before strapping into the car.

Now don't get me wrong I love learning all I can about each and every 410 driver that has the guts to strap into one of those beast, I even love to hear each sponsor so I can spend my $ at the places that help drive our favorite sport. My family sponsors a 410 sprint car and love hearing that said every time the car comes out onto the track, but don't you think the sponsors of the 358 division deserve the same recognition? Those sponsors spend a lot of money to help those men and woman compete weekly at your race track, and for an employe to not have the courtesy to say their names is very disrespectful. Your track the "Historic" Williams Grove Speedway should embrace that division just like every other division big or small that races there. Why not let Mr. Ellis know that it's not right to disrespect the division just because he does not like it? Your announcer is representing your race track and by disrespecting the drivers, teams, and most importantly the Sponsors you are making it harder and harder for the teams to find people who are willing to give them money to continue to race at your race track.

I have yet to go to any other race track and not hear the announcer disrespect a division like Mr. Ellis does on a weekly basis. Do you think the announcer at Knoxville Raceway would do this to the 360 division? I doubt it. I know Wayne Harper makes sure to say the names of the sponsors at Lincoln Speedway when they race there. I would think with declining car and FAN counts the past few years you would want to keep EVERY race team happy so they want to come back and race next season. How can teams continue to gain the sponsorships to continue when they can't even get the ones they have now said so the fans can hear them and possibly spend their money at those businesses? Instead you allow the voice of the Most Historic and Famous speedway on the east coast to continue to disrespect them every chance he gets.

His latest thing to show disrespect to the hard working race teams of the 358 sprint car division is to NOT call them SPRINT CAR DRIVERS. Really? What would you call them if 358's are not sprint cars? Should we rename the 358 division the 358 Whatchamacallits? He was quoted Friday night as saying "It sure is nice to see 358 driver Adrian Shaffer back in a sprint car" What has he been racing the past few years? 358 dragsters? Does Mr. Ellis hate the top wings that much that he wont call them what they truly are? 358 SPRINT CARS?

In closing I would just like to ask that Mrs. Huges or even Justin Loh have a talk with Mr. Ellis and explain to him that even though he might not like the division for what ever reason, it is in the best interest of the track, and every race team that chooses to compete in the 358 division, to do everything he can to ensure that car counts do not fall even more by announcing the sponsors of these teams, and showing them the respect they deserve for the time, money, and hard work that each race teams puts into it to compete at their race track.

Thanks you very much for your time,
The drivers, crews, fans, and sponsors of the 358 sprint car division.

Could not agree more with this article. Well written and respectful of Mr. Ellis. Announcing cannot be an easy job but this article certainly nails a valid point. I know of one current 410 driver/owner team-a reigning track champion at a local saturday night 410 track-that refused to run their 358 at WG over the last number of years simply because of the disrespect of Mr. Ellis toward that division. Trust me, this driver has MANY fans and recently has been running the 410 at WG(twice so far in 2014)...

Great letter, and great response. The announcer, when I was attending races at The Grove, did not call the 358s 'sprints' preferring to say, 'limiteds.' Listen up: THEY ARE ALL SPRINTS! Even the 305s.

My 2 cents into this conversation. Mr.Ellis USED to be a good announcer, however when he became a writer for Stock Car Racing and Open Wheel, I think his Ego got a boost. He even disrespects the photographic media by "getting in the way" Those of us who take photo's for our publications can't get the emotion of a driver climbing out after that 1st win etc, because Mr. Ellis is in the way. I certainly don't want a photo of the interview with his back in my face.

This coming from the same guy that has nothing good to say about the Outlaws and refuses to attend any event they have because .......

The world of outlaws are Boring follow the leader wouldn't walk across the street to watch them and spend my money to watch follow the leader. I love all aspects of Sprint and midget racing. Ya they are fast but Boring. But back to the subject it is hard enough to get sponsors these days and to have your sponsors come out and no even here there name that is disrespectful.

Racing is follow the leader or pass and become the leader.. Sponsors are not investing just because they want to hear Bruce mention them and Bruce is not the reason they are hard to find either!

The best thing the could tell Mr Ellis is "Your services are no longer needed!"

Have you not ever been to the track? There is absolutely no mention of anything Shawn Brouse does to help the divison. You harp on Bruce but Shawn does the announcing for the 358s. You should really give credit where credit is due as well, if you want to be taken seriously

Why are you arguing over sponsors? You need to thank the tax payer. The sponsors are tax avoiders.

Why must you people always find something to itch about, come on. Bruce is a great personality on and away from the track. If you don't like it, race elsewhere. I'm sure noone would even care.

Where are Wayne Harper and Dick Crownover when we need them?

I think some of the issue lies partially with the fans. How many people stay to watch 358's on a Friday at the grove? The same goes for any race track and any undercard division. How many people got up to get a bite to eat or take a p!ss when the 600s were on the track at path valley on 6/29? Nobody cares about those of us who put our hard earned dollars into "lower division" race cars, yet we spend and dedicate just as much time into our stuff as do the all might 410 teams. A little recognition, and a little respect is warranted to those of us who don't have the means to run in the top division. Well written article.

It's not just the lack of recognition from announcers for 358 and support divisions. I used to be on a 358 team that ran both Trailway and Lincoln Speedways. At Lincoln you can have a simple rollover in the 410 feature and crews are allowed on the track much longer than needed but a major flip in the 358 division the crews can only stand and watch. If these tracks want good support divisions, then treat them all the same as 410's, or expect declining car counts to continue

Joe, you gonna have the same opinion next year when Cody is back and Bruce dosen't give your sponsors enough recognition ???

Amen to the last comment.

Johnny Gibson makes the effort to mention local team sponsors when they run with the outlaws

I am a sponsor of a car in the 358 sprint car division. It would be a good idea to have your sponsor announced for each car. Remember these are the up and coming drivers of the 410 division. If the sponsors are not recognized each time, why should we be sponsors at all, then see where your car counts are!

To the person who said sponsors are tax avoiders, you know nothing about racing. Without us there would be no racers at all, except the wealthy.

This has nothing to do with the topic but how do you get a company name on one of these cars. Anyone know if anyone has room on there car
