My thoughts on a racing weekend gone by....

Hello and welcome back to My thoughts on a racing weekend gone by. The racing here in Central PA is winding down folks, but that doesn't mean it's not as hot as the weather in July. Friday night the 410's and 358's were in action at Williams Grove Speedway and Saturday night the mighty 410's were at Lincoln Speedway. Friday night was the last chance for the 410's to get ready for the biggest race of 2015 Champion Racing Oil National Open with the World of Outlaws and $50,000 on the line.

Time Trials would set the feature event and Stevie Smith would find victory lane for the 9th time in 2015. Brent Marks would lead the first half of the feature event but 4th starting Smith would run him down and after making the pass, would walk away with the win, making sure everyone knows the 51 team will be the team to beat this coming weekend. And folks if you got the first pick in your friends race poll, and Smith starts in the front three rows, you better take him.

The 358 division saw the closest point battle in sprint car racing come to a head Friday night. Chase Dietz would go into the final race of 2015 with a 20 point lead over Doug Hammaker who has set records this season with his title wins. Kevin Nouse would be on his way to his first win of the season when once again bad luck would strike the two time defending champion. As Dietz was tracking Nouse over the last five laps they took the white flag, and both headed into turn one when disaster struck Nouse for the 5th week in a row. Nouse shot low to protect the bottom as Dietz shot to the outside running the extreme high side of the track, but while setting up for another last lap last corner pass, Jared Esh, the son of 410 driver Doug Esh making his first ever 358 start, would spin in turn two right in front of Nouse. Nouse would try to make a move to get by Esh but made contact with Esh and ended up with damage to his rear end, ending his night. Dietz would take over the lead for the last lap restart and would run away from Doug Hammaker for his 4th win of the season. With the win Chase would win the battle and the war as he would be crowned the 2015 Williams Grove Speedway 358 track champion. Somehow he was also crowned the 2015 358 rookie of the year (sic). Now I know all about the rules regarding "Rookies" in a division, hell I crowned Niki Young the 2011 Central PA 358 Point Series rookie of the year. It has become the biggest mistake I have made with the 358 division because Austin Hogue should have won the rookie of the year title that year, and Williams Grove should have given the rookie of the year to someone else. Looking at the point standings Russel Hammaker was the top true rookie in the division, so in my opinion he should have been crowned the rookie of the year. That would be like Brian Brown from Knoxville running Williams Grove and winning the rookie of the year. Just doesn't make any sense. But that's just me.

Saturday night Lincoln Speedway would host the $20,000 to win "Dirt Classic". Forty One cars where pit side and fan favorite Brian Montieth would pick up his biggest win of his career. Montieth would chase down Friday night's winner Stevie Smith in lapped traffic on lap 27 of the 40 lap feature event, and would have a great battle with Smith the final thirteen laps before finally getting that big time win. The racing action was top notch Saturday night, and even with all the laps on the track, Fred Putney would give the drivers, and the fans a great racing surface. Last years "Dirt Classic" was a snoozer  of a feature event, but this year they gave the fans one hell of a show. I'm still not a fan of time trials, duel heat race format mostly because because nobody can figure it out, but it seems to be working. The race has become one of the better paying races in Central PA from top to bottom. While it doesn't pay $50,000 to win like this weekends National Open, IMO it pays way better back through the field which makes it a much better paying race for the race teams.

Speaking of race teams, where were all the Port Royal teams on Saturday night? THREE cars, let me repeat that three race teams came down from Port Royal to race for $20,000 to win. Greg Hodnett, Brent Marks, and Lucas Wolfe where the only three teams. I seem to remember a member of the Weikert family running off at the lip two years ago because Brian Montieth didn't make the trip to Port for the Weikert Memorial. Anyone remember the old saying....People in glass houses should be throwing stones.... Well guess what?.......

Don't forget folks this coming Monday, the 2nd annual Central PA Racing Scene Awards will be voted on by you the fans. We here at the site have chosen the top six drivers in eight categories ranging from the 410's to the 305's, to the best race track in Central PA. The members here at the site will cast their vote on who they think should win, and the fans will cast their votes for the driver they think should win. The winner of the fans vote will then be matched up with the six of us here at the website. The driver who gets the most votes will be crowned the winner.  This is not strictly a fan vote like a most popular driver award. Look for all the drivers and categories to be announced later this week.

This weekend is the biggest weekend in Central PA. Everyone who loves sprint car racing will be watching Williams Grove Speedway. The newly expanded three day Williams Grove Champion Racing Oil National Open is finally here. Three nights of TT and double file restarts.

Don't forget folks there will be more to do over the weekend then just get drunk, sleep in all day, and then watch cars go around in circles while downing ice cold beer until you get dizzy and fall over. Friday marks the 4th annual Williams Grove National Open Kick-It kickball tournament that will be starting at noon right up the road from the race track. Come on out and watch drivers, fans, and even a few media personalities have some fun while raising money for cancer research. Saturday marks the 6th annual National Open Benefit that will be hosted by Kolten Gouse who utilizes the proceeds from an event BBQ as well as a memorabilia auction to help support various charities throughout the racing community. In 2014, the main beneficiaries were the York County Racing, the World of Outlaws Benevolent Fund and the Steve King Foundation. Make sure you stop over and get yourself some great food and help raise some money for some great causes. Just make sure you all save me a 2x t-shirt for my collection.

I am hoping to make all three nights of the National Open, so if anyone has a seat for me on Thursday night, I will gladly use it. Until then everyone who is getting to the track early this week, be safe, and have fun. The rest of us will be up to join you as soon as we can. Go Posse....and Boooo Schatz. The Champion Racing Oil National Open at Williams Grove Speedway.

Until this Thursday folks, I hope the next 3 days goes quick, the weather stays a little warm, your beverage of choice stays ice cold, and the racing all weekend is red freakin hot, because folks it's time for the best weekend of the year.

MONTIETH HOLDS OFF SMITH IN LINCOLN “DIRT CLASSIC” THRILLER

Caps off fifth track championship with $20,000 win; Manufacturers Night season finale in two weeks

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 9/26/2015 –Brian Montieth showed the huge crowd why is the track champ by claiming the $20,000 top prize in the Second Annual “Dirt Classic” at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night.

After exchanging numerous slide jobs over the final few laps, Montieth held off inaugural “Dirt Classic” winner Stevie Smith to score a milestone 50th career Lincoln win.

And although it got down to Montieth and Smith at the end, it was Montieth’s double-pass of third-place Jac Haudenschild and second-place Brent Marks that was key to the win.

“Stevie was up there just trying not to make a mistake and trying to keep his speed,” said Montieth upon exiting the Jerry Parrish-owned Auto Locator/Premier Auto Works #21 in victory lane, “That restart when I got from fourth to second was the kicker for me. The car started to go and I got off my butt I guess.”

Smith started on the pole as high point man after time trials and two sets of qualifying events, but spotted the lead to outside front row starter Brent Marks for the first 11 laps.

Smith then pulled the slider on Marks to grab the lead in turn four of lap 12, and led through lap 26.

Montieth, who started third, ran fourth behind fourth-starting Haudenschild the first half of the race. It was after a 21st lap restart that Montieth passed both Haudenschild and Marks to move into the runner-up spot. At the time, Smith’s lead was nearly two seconds.

“It was follow the leader and I saw Greg trying to make a move when I was trying to make moves, and this place is tough in lapped traffic…especially when it’s just one lane around the top. The only time the bottom worked was on those restarts when everybody was slowed down.”

Montieth tracked down the leader over the next five laps and caught Smith on the backstretch of lap 27. Although Smith stayed close the rest of the way and actually slid in front of Montieth in heavy lapped traffic late in the race, Montieth was scored the leader of every lap.

“Once I saw Stevie, I got back on the wheel again, said Montieth, “If I made a mistake, it was on me…but I knew Stevie was going to be tough and I just tried to make the track as wide as I could there at the end.”

“I can’t say enough about this team. We haven’t had a real good run in the last few months, and I’m just happy for this team right now,” said Montieth.

Smith settled for second, with Marks third and Haudenschild fourth. Danny Dietrich, who flipped in his first heat, came from 17th starting spot to cross fifth, with Greg Hodnett running fifth the entire race until Dietrich caught him in the final few laps. Seventh through tenth were Lucas Wolfe, Aaron Ott, Gerard McIntyre, Jr., and B Main winner and 21st starting Dave Blaney.

Fast time in time trials over the 41-car field was set by Jac Haudenschild with a one-lap time of 13.090-seconds (103.132 MPH).

Two rounds of heats were won by Wolfe, Smith, Krimes, Marks, Tim Glatfelter, Billy Dietrich, Cory Haas, JJ Grasso, and Blaney.

Next Saturday night, Lincoln will be dark to allow its drivers to compete in the Williams Grove National Open.

Lincoln returns to action for its season finale on Saturday, October 10th. It will be the annual Hank Gentzler Memorial Manufacturers Appreciation Night featuring the 410 and 358 sprint cars.
Gates for that show open at 4:00 p.m. with the first qualifier scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

STEVIE SMITH WINS WILLIAMS GROVE NATIONAL OPEN TUNE-UP College freshman Chase Dietz wins 358 sprint feature and track championship

MECHANICSBURG, PA – Stevie Smith will be looking for a little redemption when the Williams Grove Speedway National Open rolls around next Saturday. Smith was leading late in the race last year when contact from eventual winner David Gravel took him out of contention.

Smith, of Broken Arrow, Okla., tuned up for that race with a win Friday night at the Grove. His fifth Grove win in 11 starts this season was worth $4,000 in a car owned by Hall of Fame driver Fred Rahmer.

In the 20-lap main event for the 358 sprints, Chase Dietz won the feature and clinched the track championship.

The three-day World of Outlaws-sanctioned Champion Racing Oil National Open begins Thursday with a $10,000 to win show. Friday’s race also pays $10,000 to win with the $50,000 to win National Open Saturday night, Oct. 3.

“All the guys behind me are running good and fast,” said Smith. “I run every lap as hard as I can and the best I can and hope at the end of the night this is where we end up, but it doesn’t always work out that way. We really want to win the National Open. It’s one of our goals. It has been my goal for a long time since the last time I did it.”

Brent Marks and Lucas Wolfe shared the front row to start the 25-lap main event. They swapped the top spot in turns one and two before Marks secured the lead.

Danny Dietrich and third starter Smith raced hard for third. Smith would get the spot with six laps down and then take second from Wolfe a few laps later.

The first caution flag flew with nine laps completed when Aaron Ott stopped. Marks picked the low side for the double-file restart.

Marks got the jump on the restart. Smith put a slider on him in turn on and momentarily took the lead, but Marks turned back under him to retake it off the corner. They were close racing into turn three and Smith would secure the lead as they completed lap 10.

“We’re set up for the end of the race,” said Smith. “Actually, it felt pretty good right from the beginning. I figured about half-way, if things go as planned, we’d have a good chance. The last few nights we haven’t been very good so they put a new car together. It feels like the old times.”

Jac Haudenschild and Brian Montieth spun in turn two bringing out the caution with 14 laps completed.

Smith pulled away on the restart as Dietrich would get by Marks for second. Sammy Swindell briefly challenged Marks for third, but couldn’t make the pass.

Smith controlled the final non-stop 11 laps to pick up his fifth Grove win of the season by 0.962 seconds over Dietrich, Marks, Swindell and Wolfe. Lawrence Chevrolet point leader Greg Hodnett, Lance Dewease, Alan Krimes, J.J. Grasso and Austin Hogue rounded out the top 10.

Hodnett set fast time over the 24-car field with a lap of 16.640. Dewease, Haudenschild and Wolfe won the heat races.  Wolfe also won the dash.

Kevin Nouse was holding back Dietz as they raced under the white flag in the 358 sprint feature. Nouse went low into turn one and Dietz went around the cushion. Jared Esh spun in turn two and collected Nouse bringing out the caution.

Dietz controlled the final lap to the get the win in the Godfrey No. 5 over second place point man Doug Hammaker, early leader Chandler Leiby, Adrian Shaffer and Eric Parker.  Dietz was also named the Rookie-of-the-Year and received the Jerry Reigle Sportsmanship Award.

H&J Towing and Recovery will return as the major sponsor for the 358 sprint car division in 2016. This year’s champion earned $1,500 out of a total point fund of over $6,000. The runner-up earned $1,100. The top 10 in final points were paid.

Dietz donated his winnings from the night and the point fund to a friend of the family that’s battling cancer. He donated over $10,000 this season to various charities.

Scott Fisher, Esh and Dietz won the 358 heat races.

My Thoughts on a racing weekend gone by....

Hello folks welcome to another round of My thoughts on a racing weekend gone by. This weekend saw round two of the Central PA's month of money take place at Selinsgrove Speedway Saturday night, plus 410 action at both Williams Grove Speedway on Friday night and Susquehanna Speedway on Sunday night for another three race weekend.

Last week, I announced the three awards for Central PA Racing Scene, which were 410 Driver of the Year, 358 Driver of the Year and Track of the Year. I'm proud to announce that we will be giving away EIGHT total awards to the great drivers of Central PA in all the sprint car divisions. We will also be having the fans vote on who they think should win the 305 Driver of the Year, 360 Driver of the Year, Most Improved 410 Driver of the Year, Most Improved 358 Driver of the Year and the Best Looking Sprint Car of 2015 ( Can be any car in any division). The awards will see the fans vote for who they think should win the award and the members of Central PA Racing Scene and  Slicks & Sticks will also cast a vote and debate amongst ourselves to see who should be crowned the winner which will essentially give a total of 7 votes to determine the winners. I will post the drivers for each category every morning, along with why each driver was chosen for the award, then the fans will have 24 hrs to cast their vote on who they think should win. We will be starting the voting the Monday after the National Open at Williams Grove in two weeks.

The Beer Hill Gang announced that at the National Open they will be giving out a $1,000 award to the "National Open Rookie of the Year". That's a damn good chunk of change for a driver and going to be an interesting race within the races to watch that weekend. We contacted The Beer Hill Gang to ask them what the rules are for qualifying for the $1,000 and was told the driver has to be running the National Open for the first time, has to race all three nights or the races that run weather permitting and is the highest finishing car will win the $1,000. Congrats to the Beer Hill Gang for putting up the money for the this and helping make the weekend even bigger. I hate the feeling that some driver with a big team who is making the trek to Central PA will get this instead of some deserving local team who could use that money, but all in all it's a very cool thing they are doing.

Now on to the racing action.....

Friday night set the tone for the weekend and there is only two words that can describe the weekend at a whole....CAR COUNTS.... Friday night twenty-one cars were pit side at Williams Grove Speedway. Twenty-one cars at the premier race track in Central PA shows there is something definitely wrong. To look a little deeper into those twenty-one cars in action that night there were six non-regular teams and I just want you all to think about that stat for a minute. Go ahead I'll wait.....That's not good folks. Now we all know the Grove will pack the pits for the Natty Open in two weeks, but to only have sixteen teams show up on a normal week is scary. At least it is for me. The stands didn't look much better, but most people will blame that on high school football; but I have no real response to that since I don't follow high school football or how many people actually go to the games. The racing on the track was great (which has been the case for most of the second half of the season) as Lucas Wolfe would come from 8th starting spot to take the win over Lance Dewease, Danny Dietrich, Greg Hodnett, and Brian Montieth. Dietrich and Hodnett were racing each other very hard throughout the twenty-five lap feature and we saw many instances where one driver would run the other to the inside going down the backstretch, or they traded some mean slide jobs in the corners making the race very fun to watch.

Saturday night we saw the 44th Annual National Open at Selinsgrove Speedway. A race that payed $10,000 to the winner and once again car counts were a major talking point as only twenty-four cars were pit side. Really, only twenty-four cars for $10,000 to win? The race was a swan song to promoter Charlie Paige who dropped the green flag on the feature event and Danny Dietrich would win the feature event leading every lap over Hodnett, 360 track champion TJ Stutts, Brent Marks, and Lucas Wolfe. I really don't have a clue why race teams don't seem to want to race at the track. Doesn't matter what division the track runs, car counts suffer, but really hope whoever takes over the track in 2016, makes the track successful, the track is too nice to let it close its doors.

Sunday night at Susquehanna Speedway, the 410's were in action and nineteen cars showed up to race. Danny Dietrich the big winner at Selinsgrove chose not to race as did Brent Marks and Kyle Moody. Hodnett would pick up the win but like the previous two nights nineteen cars? If 50+ cars do not show up this coming Saturday night at Lincoln Speedway, then what does that say about this past weekend?

Lets take a deeper look at car counts here in Central PA IN 2015. After taking some time to go back and look through all the press releases from each track here is what I have found and some of it is very interesting....

Williams Grove Speedway has had a car count of 26.92 all season and that includes the Outlaw and the All Stars. Now that is scary for the most historic race track on the east coast. The 358 division brings the same amount of cars to the track for their races....23.9. So if they should get rid of the 358's because of low car counts what should they do about the 410 division? The lowest car count for the 410's this year was nineteen which happened twice on May 29th and August 7th. The highest car count for the season was forty for the spring outlaw race. They managed thirty-nine for the other two outlaw races in July as well as the All Star race in the spring. The best non sanctioned race the Grove had all season was Speed Week which drew thirty-three and thirty-four respectively.  In contrast the 358 division never dropped below twenty-two the entire season, seeing a high of twenty-eight cars on July 10th and a season low of twenty-two. The best car count of the entire season was the first 360 show which saw forty-two cars pack the pits, but that was for one race. Would that happen every week? I don't think it would, but that's just me.

Looking at the other two regular 410 tracks Lincoln and Port Royal here is what I found...

Lincoln had the most successful season with an average car count of thirty-one. The highest coming in at forty-seven cars and hitting forty one other time in 2015. Lincoln Speedway has never had less then 24 cars for a show in 2015.

Port Royal has had an average of 28.59. Not to far off from Lincoln Speedway, but Port has seen more races with forty plus cars with three races. Their best race was forty-seven while their lowest was twenty. They had five races in 2015 that did not have a full field. So while their average is close to Lincoln's they have struggled to get full fields more then Lincoln Speedway has.

Lincoln was able to counter balance the low car counts in the 410 division by having the 358's on the card most weeks and when they did they came out strong with 29.8 average for the season. Only dropping below a full field one time. That's two sprint car divisions with strong car counts folks.

Trail Way Speedway struggled to get cars all season only averaging 12.5 cars a week. The topped out at eighteen cars twice in 2015 and only dropped down into the single digits twice.

Selinsgrove Speedway which switched to 360's in 2014 saw an average of twenty-three cars show up pit side, but they didn't race as much and had other sanctioning bodies to help bring car counts up. This season, they ran with a season low of fourteen cars and the highest being a thirty-three car field.

So, after looking at all of that what does it tell you? We are hurting big time for cars in every division and at every race track. It's that simple folks. Doesn't matter what division or what track car counts are down most weeks. Lincoln and Port seem to be in the best position right now, but they are the two tracks that seem to have the best reputation of good race surfaces and treating teams well.

What does Williams Grove need to do to help bring car counts up? The surface has been greatly improved the 2nd half of the season, yet car counts have stayed low. Maybe the Grove is starting to feel the Friday night crunch just like Trail Way Speedway. Maybe it's just not worth it to some race teams to try and hurry home on a Friday afternoon, and try to get to a race track to race. Maybe just maybe, but I'll let smarter people than I try and figure that out.

Well, that's it for this week folks. Lets get ready for the next two weeks in Central PA, which will bring us all the two biggest races in Central PA, where car counts will NOT be an issue. Friday night, Williams Grove will host the 410's in their Outlaw tune-up before the huge three day $50,000 to win National Open along with the final 358 race of the season at the historic half mile. Chase Dietz holds a slim 20 point lead over Doug Hammaker for the 2015 track Championship, and both drivers have been strong all season. Hope we see a safe, clean race between the two and let the chips fall were they may.

Saturday night, everyone will be either racing at or watching Lincoln Speedway for the second annual Dirt Classic. $20,000 to win and a great payout back through the field will bring a lot of teams to the track. I would bet money this race will have the biggest car count for the entire season in Central PA. The thing that worries me, just like it did last year is the format. If you want to run double heat races then they need to figure out a way to make them exciting for the fans. They also need to keep the fans up to date on the whole points system. I should not need to bring a calculator and a trig book to help me figure out who is on the front row. Last year nobody had a clue what was going on including some of the drivers. But I will be there early so swing by and have a cold beer with me, and let me know how much you like or hate the site.

Until then I hope everyone has a great work week. I will see everyone Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway. Try to stay warm this week, and make sure you have your beverage of choice on ice, because the racing this coming weekend is going to be red hot.

Hodnett Takes Checkers over Haudenschild at at SSP on Sunday Night

Newberrytown, PA (September 20, 2015) – Greg Hodnett of Thomasville took his second consecutive 410 Sprint Car feature race in the Sunday Night Sprint Car Special at the Susquehanna Speedway Park.  Orwigsburg’s Tyler Reeser collected the IMCA PA Sprint20-lap feature race at the end of the night.

By virtue of a number one pill inversion, the two heat race winners Jac Haudenschild and Lance Dewease brought the field to the green.  Haudenschild grabbed the early lead over Hodnett with Lance Dewease close behind in third.  Almost midway through the non-stop feature, Hodenett drove by Haudenschild on the bottom to take the lead.  Haudenschild tried to regain the lead but was unable to make the winning pass as Hodnett went on to take the victory in 7 minutes and 1.09 seconds.  Haudenschild settled for second followed by Austin Hogue in third.  Chase Dietz finished fourth with Glenndon Forsythe finishing fifth.

In the 20-lap IMCA PA Sprint Car feature, Tyler Reeser started on the outside of the front row and took the lead and began to set a blistering pace with Darren Miller Jay Krout trying to chase him down.  The only thing that slowed down was two caution flags as he went on to take the win over Miller.  Jaremi Hanson finished third as Tyler Lebo crossed the line in fourth.  Krout rounded out the top five at the end.  Miller and Zach Newlin were the heat race winners.

Double D Wires Field For 1st Career Selinsgrove Victory With Jim Nace Memorial National Open Victory

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Danny Dietrich of Gettysburg wired the field for his first-ever win at Selinsgrove Speedway in Saturday night’s Jim Nace Memorial 33rd Annual National Open for 410 sprint cars sponsored by Paul Stine Chevrolet.

The $10,000 victory at the wheel of the Kauffman Racing/ Sandoe’s Fruit Market No. 48 was Dietrich’s 15th overall win in sprint car racing this season.

Brock Zearfoss of Jonestown was the Fast Tees Fast Qualifier with a lap time of 16.554.

Dylan Yoder of Selinsgrove won his first race of the season at Selinsgrove and fourth overall this year in the 25-lap super late model main event.

Saturday night’s race closed out the 2015 racing season at the 70-year-old facility and marked the end of Charlie Paige’s 15-year term as track promoter. The Selinsgrove Fair Association, which governs the speedway, is working on a succession plan for racing to continue in 2016.

Dietrich started on the pole and powered into the lead in the sprint car main event with second-place starter Lucas Wolfe and third-place starter Greg Hodnett in pursuit. On the ninth circuit, Hodnett drove by Wolfe for the runner-up spot racing out of turn four.

The race’s first caution flag unfurled on lap 12 when Aaron Ott’s car blew a tire on the frontstretch. Ott did a remarkable job keeping the car from making contact with the guardrail and was able to rejoin the race.

On the lap 13 restart, Dietrich continued to set a blistering pace with Hodnett clearing the lapped cars and setting his sights on the leader. On the 16th lap, fourth-place starter TJ Stutts started to show a lot of speed and passed Wolfe for the third position.

Ott, meanwhile, stormed into the ninth position after restarting on the rear of the field. On lap 18, however, misfortune struck the East Berlin driver again when his car slammed the inside wall and was struck by Michael Walter’s car. Both drivers escaped injury.

With 15 laps to race, Stutts started to pressure Hodnett for the second position. In the final five laps, Dietrich encountered and navigated his way around slower traffic. Stutts made a last-ditch effort at Hodnett for second to no avail. At the checkered flag, Dietrich was victorious by 2.7 seconds over Hodnett, Stutts, seventh-place starter Brent Marks, and Wolfe.

Polesitter Dylan Yoder pulled into the lead at the start of the late model main event while second-place starter Pancho Lawler held down the runner-up position for several laps. With three laps down, fourth-place starter Jim Yoder and fifth-place starter Jeff Rine dueled for the third position.

On the seventh circuit, Rine took the third spot then advanced to second with a pass by Lawler out of turn four. A lap later, J. Yoder secured the third spot. The second half of the race D. Yoder dueled with Rine for the lead. Both drivers streaked around the top of the race track in the first and second spots.
Despite several restarts, D. Yoder maintained an edge over Rine to the finish. At the checkered flag, D. Yoder was victorious by 1.2 seconds over Rine, Andy Haus, J. Yoder, and Chad Hollenbeck.

Lucas Wolfe Takes Lead From Dewease For Second Williams Grove Sprints Win Steve Buckwalter scores ARDC Midgets

9/18/15
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mechanicsburg – Lucas Wolfe took the lead from Lance Dewease and drove to his second sprint car win of the season at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday night.

Wolfe pocketed $4,180 for the victory including lap and bonus money.

Steve Buckwalter scored in the 20-lap ARDC Midget main to close the night.

The highly competitive 410 sprint main saw the red flag appear on the first lap when Pat Cannon got out of shape while challenging leader Tim Glatfalter in the third corner.

Cannon’s racer ended up against the outside rail while also collecting the front running machines of Brent Marks, Chase Dietz and others.

Glatfelter restarted with the lead but his run there was short as one-time winner Austin Hogue throttled around the outside and into control on the restart.

Lance Dewease, who restarted third, drove to second with three away and immediately began challenging Hogue for the lead, taking it with four away in the 25 lapper.

Glatfelter then stopped with five down and slowed the pace again with eighth starter Wolfe sitting third for the restart.

Wolfe had disposed of Hogue for second on the restart and was less than a second behind Dewease when another yellow flag unfurled with eight laps down.

Dewease kept Wolfe at bay when green reappeared but Dewease failed to slip away as Danny Dietrich and Greg Hodnett began swapping the third spot.

Dewease’s lead of just over a second was wiped out with the advent of another yellow flag on the 11th tour and again, he kept Wolfe at bay at the new green.

However on a final restart with 11 laps to go, Wolfe provided more of a challenge and Dewease could only hold Wolfe off until the 18th circuit when the Mechanicsburg native blasted underneath for control in the first corner.

Wolfe then began pulling away from the field once he got control as Dietrich and Hodnett continued their battle.

In the end Wolfe took the checkers by 3.308 seconds over Dewease, Dietrich, Hodnett and Brian Montieth.

Sixth through 10th went to 17th starter Freddie Rahmer, Cory Haas, Hogue, Rodney Westhafer and Glenndon Forsythe.

Heats went to Wolfe, Hodnett and Dewease.

Shawn Jackson controlled the first 5 laps of the ARDC Midget main before Tommy Kunsman took over.

But on the move from the 12th starting spot was Steve Buckwalter, who was up to fourth by just the completion of the sixth tour.

Buckwalter moved around PJ Gargiulo for third with eight down, then took second from Jackson a lap later before getting underneath Kunsman for the win with six laps to go.

Steve Drevicki finished second followed by Kunsman, Gargiulo and Brenden Bright.

Heats went to Brett Wanner and Brett Arndt.
