My Thoughts On The New Drug Testing in Dirt Track Racing.

This week the World of Outlaws announced they will start  random drug testing at races held in 2017. It has been greeted with  resounding applause by almost all in the sport. You can check out the press release by the World Of Outlaws HERE .

 I for one think it has been needed for some time, but the more I think about it the more I wonder how much good it will do for the sport as a whole. While some fans do not think drugs are a big deal in our sport, and another segment of our fans only seem to worry about drivers who might smoke pot, I am more worried about the drivers who abuse other drugs like prescription pain medicine. But even while thinking about all of this a few things popped into my head.

For a traveling group of the best sprint car drivers in the country to have a drug testing program in place is 1 thing, but what about our local drivers here in Central PA? I think we all want to believe that our local drivers are all drug free and race with a straight head while putting their lives on the line at over a 100 MPH but I am here to tell you that is far from true. Now I have no 1st hand knowledge of this but just looking at statistics there is no way anyone can think we do not have drivers who use drugs on a regular basis.

While looking at Live Science you can see that 1 in 3 people in the United States have a problem with drugs. Now to put that in racing terms using the same stats 8 drivers in a 24 car starting feature could have a drug problem. Now I don't know about you, but that is a very scary stat. It is also estimated that 27.1 million people have used an illegal drug in the past month. Now tell me again how local racing doesn't have anyone racing at our local dirt tracks that use drugs? That would be impossible.

Now most list marijuana as their drug of choice and I will be honest with all of you, that doesn't bother me at all. I am a huge proponent of the legalization of that drug because I don't think it is that big of a deal to use it and neither do most Americans. As Gallup shows, support for legalization is at 62 percent among adults under 30, 56 percent among those aged 30 to 49, 49 percent among those aged 50 to 64, but only 31 percent among those over 65. The problem with marijuana is it stays in your system for so long there is no way of really finding out if someone is using it at home or at the race track. So while I don't see a problem with a driver smoking a joint after a race to help him relax after a stressful night wheeling a race car at 100 MPH I can understand why tracks would just so 0 tolerance for that drug as well.

My big thing with testing for drugs is it has to test for illicit drugs. What is the difference between illegal and illicit drugs you ask? Illegal drugs are pot or cocaine while Illicit drugs are prescription drugs. Anyone who watches the news knows that prescription drug abuse is a major problem in this country because every problem we seem to have has some sort of drug to help "cure" or "manage" the problem. You can read up on prescription drug problem in the US HERE but 1 thing that stood out for me was 15 million people abuse prescription drugs. I remember an article a few years ago in AARN where a local dirt track driver ( not a sprint car driver) talked about after an injury he raced for a few years while under the influence of prescription drugs, and I don't know how many of you have ever had a surgery for anything serious, but I did once and when I took my medicine it totally zoomed my ass out. I laid on the couch and drolled like Homer Simpson staring at a donut. Now that was only after 2 pills that my doctor told me to take. Imagine how some people are when taking 10 or more at a time because they are immune to them. Think about the pain some drivers are in after they crash going into turn 3 at Port Royal or any other track in Central PA and then show back up the next week to do it again. They might only need 1 or 2 to help get them back in the car, but I know from experience that's all it takes to mess a person up for a good while.

Now a big question is how do local race tracks pay for it? Do they charge more to get into a race so they can keep the sport clean? Are fans willing to pay more to see a race just so the tracks can clean up the sport? Looking on the web you can find many different drug test that cost anywhere from $10 to $30 a test. Now most of them are just for local random test. The tracks could use them to see if anyone has anything in their system and if they do they can then send the driver to a local hospital for a better test. If that test comes back hot then the driver must pay for that test. Just another way to help deter drivers from using drugs and having it cost them more money.

One more thing we as fans need to think about when asking for random drug testing at our local race tracks is what happens when a driver gets caught? Are we willing to suffer the unintended consequences of a driver loosing his job because he fails a drug test for pot even though he smoked a joint on Tuesday night sitting outback in his yard while drinking a beer with his wife or girlfriend? The looks said driver will suffer from people in his home town when he gets busted for said thing?  How bout his kids? Imagine how his or her kids will feel when they go to school and other kids start talking about their father or mother getting busted at the track for being a drug user. Are we willing to go down that road? That is all things that need to be considered when starting something like this at our local short tracks.

I think we can all agree that drugs are bad for our sport, and it needs to be stopped. The real question is how to do it fairly, how to pay for it, and are we really willing to destroy a driver and his families reputation doing it? Just something to think about.

My thoughts on the 2016 Racing Season Gone By

Hello and welcome back to a brand spanking new My Thoughts on The 2016 Racing Season Gone By. I am your host as usual Bill McIntyre. I don't know about any of you race fans but the 2016 racing season was a strange one. One of the strangest racing season I can ever remember. Good racing, GREAT racing, drivers fighting with each other, drivers fighting with race tracks, good weather, bad weather. The 2016 had it all didn't it.

Most of you know I'm a numbers guy so lets start off by looking at the 2016 racing season by the numbers.

31 - 31 different drivers won a 410 feature in 2016 led by Greg Hodnett with a division leading 19.

2 - 2 different drivers posted double digit wins in 2016. Hodnett with 19 and Lance Deweese with 10. That was down from 4 last season.

16 - 16 different drivers won 1 feature in 2016.

15 - 15 different drivers won multiple feature events in 410 action in 2016.

4 - 4 different 410 drivers won their 1st career 410 feature in Central Pa in 2016, Tyler Ross , Joey Hershey, Kasey Kahne, and Jacob Allen.

76 - the number of different heat race winners in the 410 division in 2016.

96 - the number of different drivers who scored at least 1 top 10 in the 410 division in 2016.

24 - 24 different 358 drivers won at least 1 feature in 2016 with Doug Hammaker leading the pack for the 2nd season in a row with 6.

15 - 15 drivers picked up 1 win in 2016 in the 358 division.

7 - 7 drivers picked up their 1st career 358 feature win in 2016. Dalton Dietrich , CJ Tracey, Tyler Walton, Trey Hivner, Troy Wagaman Jr, Steve Drevicki and Brent Shearer.

5 - 5 of those first time winners were rookies in the 358 division.

41 - the number of different 358 drivers who won a heat race in 2016.

61 - the number of different 358 drivers who scored at least 1 top 10 in 2016.

Now those stats can all be seen on the right side of the very website you are checking out this very minute but how bout we drop a few states that are not as easy to find....

Car Counts for the 2016 racing season in Central PA.

Car counts are something everyone worries about. Whether its Trail Way Speedway or Williams Grove Speedway, a fan or the promoter of the track it seems that is the 1 thing everyone worries about. Well guess what folks? Car Counts are not as bad as we think they are. Here are the car counts for the 7 tracks in Central PA for 2016 and a few extra tidbits just to make you think a little bit.

Williams Grove Speedway - The Grove averaged 28.64 cars per race in 2016 for the 410 division.. The track was helped by huge numbers for the Outlaws and All Stars who ran there 5 times bringing with them 36 or more cars. The highest car count was the National Open which saw 48 cars which tied Lincoln Speedway for the biggest car count of 2016. The good news for WG is they never dropped into the teens like they did in 2015.

The 358 division saw a major increase in car counts as well. 26.63 cars per race in 2016 was a major upswing for the track. They had a season high 31 twice for the Capitol Renegade KING Series and the Nouse Signs and Graphics race. To me it would seem the drivers respond to extra special races that give the drivers a chance to earn extra money. Only twice in 2016 did the division not have a full field.

Now the 360's ran 4 races and brought 26.5 cars per race. Same exact number of cars as the 358 division but remember the track pays out double the purse. So did it make sense to run them? I will let you figure that one out.

The 305's ran 4 times and brought 28 cars per race so they were the best "support division" for the Grove in 2016 but only by 1 car.

Lincoln Speedway - Lincoln Speedway averaged 30 cars per race in the 410 division in 2016. Highest being the Dirt Classic which had 48 cars and the All Stars that saw 41 cars in the pits. Only twice in 2016 did Lincoln not have a full field of  410 sprints.

The 358's saw an average of 31 cars pit side for their 19 races. The best car count was on July 2nd with a 358 season high of 41 for any race track. Only once did the division not have a full field so the 358's remain strong as the main support division for Lincoln Speedway.

Port Royal Speedway - 28.7 was the average for the 410's at Port Royal Speedway in 2016. They topped over 40 cars for the last 3 races of 2016 the Outlaw race saw 45 and both nights of the Tuscarora 50 had 41. Looking at the numbers the scary thing was the track had car counts in the teens 3 times with 16 being the worst. They had 3 other races that did not have full fields so 6 out of 22 races with bad car counts shouldn't be any big deal. The track has figured out the secret to pulling cars in and that's monster paying races that bring 30+ cars in 10 times in 2016. And some wonder why Port Royal Speedway has been voted the best track in Central PA 3 years running? How does a $50,000 to win race in 2017 sound? Sounds like another reason for drivers to support Port Royal Speedway.

Trail Way Speedway- Trail Way Speedway saw an average of 17.66 cars per race in 2016. While that was the lowest car count of any track in Central PA, it a very good number for the track and here is why. The track saw 3 more cars per night at the track from 2015. That shows growth and I hope it continues in 2017.

Selinsgrove Speedway - 23.45 was the average car counts for the only track that runs the 360 sprints in 2016. That number is a positive sign that more teams are starting to support the fastest track in Central PA.

The 410 races still struggled though in 2016 as they only averaged 23.5 cars per race. But car counts don't always equal great racing as the best 410 race I saw in 2016 was at Selinsgrove Speedway.

Susquehanna Speedway - The home of the Super Sportsman saw the division average 26 cars per race in the 1st season for the class at their new home. Only once in the 2016 season did they not have a full field and it will be interesting to see how the new guys on the block can build on that for 2017.




Wanted to finish of my last article of 2016 with some highlights of the best racing I saw in 2016. The best 410 race I saw in 2016 was at Selinsgrove Speedway on June 12th. Now most race fans didn't make it to Selinsgrove that night for the special Friday night show as Williams Grove had the USAC Silver Crown Cars there for their huge return to the historic track but for the fans who made the trip up 11/15 to the fastest half mile on the east coast they were treated to a hell of a 3 car battle for the win which would end up being won by Greg Hodnett. This race had my entire family and everyone in the stands holding their collective breath as the drivers dive bombing each other for the win. I have always said that Selinsgrove Speedway is my favorite track in Central PA and this race showed everyone why. Not sure what it is but when drivers can run a half mile like they are racing on a 1/4 mile bullring it makes for some exciting racing.



A close runner up for the best 410 race of 2016 has to go to the July 10th race at Trail Way Speedway. My good friend said after the race that was like watching fighter jets in a gymnasium. Watch the highlights from that race and you can see why it will be one of the most anticipated races in 2017 once again.




The best 358 race of 2016 happened at Lincoln Speedway on August 6th and came down to a last lap pass for the win by Kevin Nouse over rookie Tyler Walton. The track was bad fast with a great cushion to bounce off of and it gave the fans in attendance that night a race that they would never forget. Kudos to Fred Putney for the track and all the drivers for putting on the best race of 2016 in the 358 division.

JACOB ALLEN GETS FIRST CAREER WIN IN SPRINT SHOWDOWN Kevin Nouse Scores in 358 Sprints

YORK HAVEN, PA 11/5/16

The Wintermyer Auto Salvage Sprint Showdown presented by Rock-It Pizza brought closed the curtain on the 2016 Susquehanna Speedway.

And it brought a little of everything.

Hanover’s Jacob Allen gave the largest crowd of the season a thrill has he led all 30-laps to capture his first career 410 Sprint car win.  Allen’s win came in the final BAPS Coatings & Supplies race of 2016.

After winning the dash, Allen, who recently completed his third full season on the World of Outlaws tour lined up on the pole and would keep Lance Dewease at bay during the entire 30 lap distance as he became the fourth different winner in five BAPS events this season.

With Delaware style restarts the theme for the day, Allen was able to stay out front and was never seriously challenged as he brought home the big $5,000 check for the Shark Racing Team, owned by his father, Bobby Allen.

Allen controlled the event as only one caution slowed the pace during the first 21 laps.

But two straight reds, one for Kyle Reinhardt and then another for Logan  Wagner on the restart slowed the pace. The third and final red came out with four laps to go when Tyler Reeser flipped.

Second-starting Dewease finished second  with Greg Hodnett winning the torried battle for third over Brent Marks. Fifth went to Ryan Smith, who earned $500 from Emory Transmissions and a $400 gift certificate from Brown & Miller Racing Solutions for setting fast time.

Completing the top ten finishers were Freddie Rahmer, Hard Charger Brandon Rahmer, Glenn Forsythe, Caleb Armstrong and Mike Mahaney. Rahmer earned a $400 gift certificate from Brown & Miller Racing Solutions.

Smith’s fast lap of 14.918 seconds during time trials came over a field of 35 410 Sprints.

Heats were won by Kyle Reinhardt, Allen, Dewease and Wagner with Brandon Rahmer taking the consolation win.

Kevin Nouse started second in the 25-lap 358 Sprint car feature and led flag to flag to score the $1,000 payday.

Numerous yellows slowed Nouse’s pace and a close call when Shane Yost spun directly in front of him with 22 laps complete, but it was all Nouse out front in taking the win over sixth-starting Steve Owings, 14th starter Kyle Denmyer, 10th starting Brie Hershey and 18th starting Cody Flecher.

Rounding out the top ten finishers were Dwight Leppo, Steven Drevicki, Todd Gracey, Jeff Halligan and Jordan Givler.

Heats for the 24 358 Sprints were won by Nouse, Doug Hammaker and Drevecki.

FRANKIE HERR’S THIRD WIN COMES IN FALL CLASSIC Randy Christine, Jr. Tyler Reeser, Mike Potts, Davey Nestor and Justin Cardasso Visit Victory Lane

It was all Frankie Herr in Saturday night’s Hess Ornamental Iron Fall Classic King of the Hill at Susquehanna Speedway.

Herr’s flag to flag win came in the final appearance of the season by the Credit Connection Auto Sales Super Sportsman and was the Carlisle, PA’s drivers third win of the season driving the Devine Racing owned mount.

Herr started on the pole of the 40-lap Fall Classic and dominated the event, leading all 40 non stop laps. The race was slowed two times on the initial green flag.

Fourth starter Kenny Edkin finished in the runner-up spot followed by 2016 Susquehanna track champion Russ Mitten, who started eighth. Fourth went to Rich Eichelberger with Timmie Barrick fifth ahead of Scott Dellinger, Doug Dodson, Rick Barr, Steve Fannasy and Gregg Foster.

Nate Young paced the 23-car field in time trials with a lap of 16.752 seconds with heats going to Mitten, Dellinger and Edkin.

Randy Christine, Jr. put an exclamation on his great 2016 racing season with his fourth 25-lap 358 Late Model win of the season after clinching the 2016 track championship.

Christine started 10th on the grid and made his way to the front by lap 11, taking the lead from Daulton Bigler and drove away from the field to score the win over Shaun Jones, Chase Billet, 22nd starter  Brian Shuey and Sammy Rial.

Sixth through 10th were Jake Jones, Randy Stoudt, George Dixon, Jr., Matt Murphy and Charles Potts.

Jake Jones and Chase Billet were heat race winners for the 22-car field.

Tyler Reeser continued his domination in IMCA PASS 305 Sprint car action, racing to his fourth win of the season after leading the final six laps.

Drew Ritchey finished second after leading through 18 with John Barnett coming home third after starting 12th ahead of Kyle Ganoe and Dave Grube.

Colby Dice, Barnett and Reeser won heats for the 21 Sprints.

Street Stock track champion Mike Potts turned in a great performance after winning the consolation, starting 19th in the field and driving through the field to post his third win in the 20-lap Street Stock feature.

Potts raced by leader Paul Morgan on the 19th lap and picked up the win over Eddie Richards, Morgan, Bob Scott, Jr. and 16th starter Craig Morgan.

Kevin Sigler, Jasen Geesaman and Greg Diehl won heats for the 29 Street stocks with Potts taking the consolation win.

Davey Nestor led all 20 laps to become the seventh different winner in Xtreme Stock action. Nestor’s first win came over 2016 track champion Alex Updegraff, Kirby Sites, Jerry Blauch and Dan Snyder.

Justin Cardasso captured his first win of the year in the 15-lap Road Warrior feature. He became the eighth different winner of the season and scored the win over Daryl Sipe, Justin Oberlin, Robert Wellman and Terry Hartlaub.

Susquehanna Speedway returns to action on Saturday, October 22 with the 12th annual Millers Racing Parts Nationals presented by Insinger Fuels. On the racing card will be the Xtreme Stocks, Street Stocks, Road Warriors, MiniVans, Penmar Vintage Cars and 600 Micro Sprints.  Pits open at 2PM, Grandstands at 3PM with Racing at 5PM.

SCHUCHART SCORES POPULAR PORT ROYAL WORLD OF OUTLAWS VICTORY SATURDAY

Hanover driver gets second tour win of year in front of home state fans

PORT ROYAL, Pa. – Hanover’s Logan Schuchart scored a convincing win in Saturday night’s 30-lap World of Outlaws sprint car feature at Port Royal Speedway, taking $10,000 for the victory in front of his home state fans.

The victory was Schuchart’s second career checkers at the Port Royal oval and it was also his second of the season with the World of Outlaws sprint car circuit after recording his first-ever with the group earlier this year in the Midwest.

The 25-lap xtreme stock main was taken by Curtis Lawton who scored $1,000 for the checkers.

A stellar 46-car field of World of Outlaws sprint cars signed in for action with Lucas Wolfe setting the overall fast time in time trials with a lap of 15.258 while Schuchart was second quick.

Wolfe started on the pole of the sprint car feature flanked by Schuchart with Donny Schatz and Greg Hodnett in row two.

Wolfe bolted into control when action began but only two laps could be completed before the first caution flag of the race appeared for a spun Brock Zearfoss in the third turn.

Wolfe chose the inside for the double file restart and Schuchart blasted in front of Wolfe for the lead when the field took the green off of the fourth corner.

The restart also allowed Schatz to get by Hodnett for third.

Schuchart entered the rear of the field on the eighth lap and by lap 10 he had built up a 2.177 second lead over Wolfe.

TJ Stutts spun in the second turn with 11 laps down, setting up another restart with Schuchart choosing the inside lane for the new green.

And this time Hodnett one-upped Schatz for third, taking the spot away while Schuchart drove away from Wolfe and 10th starter starter Brian Brown got by Daryn Pittman for fifth.

At the halfway point Schuchart again had a healthy lead, this time 2.372 seconds.

In firm control, Schuchart again hit the backmarkers with 10 laps to go, finding Brown relegating Schatz to fifth as the Missouri driver impressed the fans on his first ever visit to the track.

With six laps to go Schuchart was hiding from the field out front as Hodnett rolled to the bottom side and began making time on Wolfe.

Simultaneously, 12th starter Lance Dewease was knifing through the field, up to seventh during his assault on the field.

Both Hodnett and Schatz surged during the final laps, with Hodnett motoring by Wolfe into second with Schatz following suit for third.

Dewease meanwhile tracked down and drove by David Gravel and Brown in the final laps to be alongside Wolfe for fourth on the final lap as the pair raced down the backchute.

Aboard a mount owned by his famous grandfather Bobby Allen, Logan Schuchart took the win by 4.705 seconds at the finish over Hodnett, Schatz, Wolfe and Dewease.

Sixth through 10th went to Brown, Gravel, Pittman, Brad Sweet and Joey Saldana.

Heats went to Schuchart, Schatz, Wolfe and Pittman with the C Main going to Zearfoss and Jacob Allen scoring the B Main.

Wolfe won the six-lap dash, setting a new track record with a time of 1:30.002.

Brian Walls started on the pole of the xtreme stock main and led the first 18 laps before sixth starter Curtis Lawton muscled into control.

Reigning track champion Pete Leister pressured Walls for control after starting eighth but instead, Lawton surged during the second half of the race to use a fast outside lane to get control, passing both leaders at once with six laps to go for the win.

Walls was second followed by Leister, Alex Boozel and Deron Henry.

DANNY DIETRICH WINS CHAMPION RACING OIL NATIONAL OPEN AT WILLIAMS GROVE SPEEDWAY

MECHANICSBURG, PA – Danny Dietrich grabbed the lead from Joey Saldana with two laps to go and would go on to win the 54th Annual Williams Grove National Open Friday night.
Dietrich, of Gettysburg, earned $25,000 in the car owned by Gary Kauffman.  It was his first career National Open win.

“This is incredible,” said Dietrich. “That might have been one of the toughest races I’ve run. They were setting one heck of a pace. I kept working the bottom off of four and I thought if we got to traffic, I’d be alright and sure enough we got to it. These are the toughest guys to race against and to be able to win against these guys and race that hard- it was no easy win.”

Saldana started on the pole and grabbed the early race lead over Brad Sweet and Donny Schatz. David Gravel and Dietrich, who started sixth, swapped the fourth spot.

Saldana reached lapped traffic with six laps completed on a very fast racing surface. Saldana struggled to lap some cars allowing Sweet and Schatz to close. Saldana would finally lap Danny Holtgraver leaving the battle for second.

Sweet would close again and grab the lead off turn two with 14 laps completed. Sweet got held up by a lapped car entering turn one and Saldana blasted around the cushion to retake the lead. Schatz drove under Sweet off turn four to take second.

Saldana led by 1.180 seconds at the half-way point of the 40-lap National Open. Dietrich passed Gravel and then Sweet to move into third.

The first caution flag flew with 23 laps completed when Doug Esh stopped at the end of the backstretch. The field was then stopped to allow teams to refuel.

Saldana picked the inside lane on Schatz for the double-file restart Dietrich threw a big slider at Schatz in turn three to take the second spot. Schatz fought back, but Dietrich drove off the cushion in turn two to secure second.

Shane Stewart stopped on the frontstretch with 24 laps completed. Saldana and Dietrich now shared the front row for the restart. Saldana would keep Dietrich behind him following the restart as Schatz and Sweet raced hard for third.  Dave Blaney spun in turn two with 26 laps completed.

Dietrich went after Saldana in turn one on the restart and grabbed the lead. Saldana drove back under him to retake the lead as they race down the backstretch. Saldana took the cushion in turn three, but Dietrich drove to the bottom and had the lead coming off turn four, but the caution flew before they completed the lap.

A single-file restart ensued with Saldana leading Dietrich.
Saldana kept Dietrich about a second behind him until they reached lapped traffic. Dietrich tried to take the lead with seven laps to go, but couldn’t make the pass in turn four.
Saldana continued to lead, but Dietrich wasn’t done. Saldana checked up hard entering turn one behind Shane Stewart. Dietrich was there and nearly got into the back of Saldana in turn two.
Both drivers maintained their spots as they straightened out off turn two and raced down the backstretch. Saldana led with two laps to go, but Dietrich drove by him in turns one and two. Dietrich led into turn three and as they took the white flag.

“I lost that ground, but made it right back up,” said Dietrich. “I really thought without the lapped cars I’d be able to pull back to his bumper and it was going to have to be a big slide-job to get by him.”
Dietrich controlled the final lap to score the win by 1.127 over Saldana.

“If you would have told me on lap 10 that I’d be standing here, I would have laughed,” said Dietrich. “But, the track came to us a little bit and 40 laps is a long race. We were set-up for the last 20 and it played out in our favor.”

Saldana was forced to settle for a disappointing runner-up.
“He’s really good,” said Saldana. “These guys out here are very good and to be able to be on the frontstretch with them is a huge accomplishment. But, obviously, you want to win this race and I didn’t get it done. It sucks to be two laps short.”

Sweet, Schatz and Gravel completed the top five. Track champion Greg Hodnett, Daryn Pittman, Logan Schuchart, Lance Dewease and Jason Sides rounded out the top 10.

Tim Wagaman set overall fast time with a lap of 16.314 seconds. Schuchart was just a tick slower with a lap of 16.316 in the second flight of qualifying. A total of 48 cars were in the pits.

Blaney, Sweet, Gravel and Saldana won the eight-lap heat races. Saldana won the dash. Tim Shaffer won the C-main. T.J. Stutts won the B-main.

MONTIETH CLAIMS FIRST LINCOLN WIN SINCE MAY AND THIRD WIN OF THE YEAR IN SEASON FINALE HANK GENTZLER MEMORIAL MANUFACTURERS APPRECIATION RACE

Brie Hershey only the third repeat winner of the year in 358’s; Fred Cullum stays undefeated in 2016 Lincoln All-American Outlaws

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA 10/9/2016 – Brian Montieth took advantage of a front-row starting position to score the 53rd win of his Lincoln career in Sunday night’s Hank Gentzler Memorial Manufacturers Appreciation Race sponsored by Pancho’s Racing Products.

“Starting up front and leading helped us out,” said Montieth upon exiting the Jerry Parrish #21 in victory lane, “I’m sure Danny (Dietrich) was better than me, because I saw him come up on the board there pretty quick. I didn’t know what he was going to do. I was trying to use every block I could with the lapped cars. Tonight, it worked out to be the leader.”

Montieth grabbed the lead from polesitter Austin Hogue at the outset and led every lap. Dietrich, who started sixth, was already up to second by the end of the second lap, setting up the anticipated race-long battle between the two dominant racers at the Pigeon Hills oval in 2016.

The only break in action during the 25-lap event was a sixth-lap caution for Bill Jones, Jr., who came to a stop in turn one.

Dietrich chased Montieth the whole way, pulling alongside the leader several times over the second half of the race.

“I could hear him back there the whole time, and I was just basically trying to not mess up,” said Montieth, “The car drag-raced pretty good down the chute, but didn’t get through the corners well, at least to my liking. But we’re sitting here for the last race of the season, and I can’t say much more about these guys. The season’s long, and I’m glad to see it’s over.”

Montieth’s final margin of victory was a carlength, with Alan Krimes making a late-race pass over Lucas Wolfe to finish third. Wolfe and World of Outlaw invader Jacob Allen crossed fourth and fifth. Sixth through tenth were Brent Marks, Jim Siegel, Greg Hodnett, Logan Schuhart, and Hogue.

Heats for the 29 410 sprints on hand were won by Wolfe, Siegel, and Hogue, with Brandon Rahmer winning the consolation.

Lady driver Brie Hershey won a race-long battle with Brent Shearer and survived a last-lap shootout to score her second win of the year in the 20-lap “358” sprint car feature.

Like Montieth, Hershey started on the outside of the front row alongside Jake Eldreth. But unlike Montieth, she did not lead every lap. She momentarily lost the lead to Shearer, who was scored the leader in heavy lapped traffic on lap 10. But Hershey made the bottom groove work to perfection and got back around Shearer on lap 11.

She joined Doug Hammaker and Jeff Rohrbaugh as the only repeat winners in the 358 division this season.

Shearer settled for second, with 11th-starting Doug Hammaker, 2016 track champ Chandler Leiby, and 12th-starting Tyler Esh rounding out the top five. Sixth through tenth were Eldreth, Todd Rittenhouse, Jr., Ashley Cappetta, 19th-starting Kyle Denmyer, and Cody Fletcher.

Heats for the 28 358 sprints on hand were won by Dwight Leppo (who flipped on lap 19 of the feature), Shearer, and CJ Tracy, with Kyle Denmyer winning the consolation.

Fred Cullum won again in the All-American Outlaw feature, remaining undefeated at Lincoln in 2016. And he did it in dramatic fashion, catching race-long leader Bryan Green coming down to the checkered flag on the last lap.

For the second straight time, Green lost to Cullum on the final turns to the checkered.

Third through fifth were Justin Cullum, Randy Doty, and Danny Holmes.

Heats for the All American Outlaws were won by Green and Fred Cullum.

The All-American Outlaw feature ended the 2016 Lincoln racing season.

The Lincoln Speedway Awards Banquet will close out 2016 speedway activities on Saturday, November 19th (6 PM-12:30 AM).

Promoters Don Leiby and Alan Kreitzer have announced that opening day for the 2017 season will be Saturday, February 25th. Gates will open at noon with 410 sprint car racing to begin at 2:00 p.m.

Greg Hodnett Wins Third Of Williams Grove Season Friday, B. Bernheisel Takes Lates

Mechanicsburg – Greg Hodnett won his third sprint car feature of the season at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday night, scoring $3,800 for the 25-lap victory that was the 66th of his career to date at the oval.

In the 15-lap super late model main, Bryan Bernheisel of Lebanon scored a $2,000 win in a special “Run What Ya’ Brung” event.

Cory Haas started on the pole of the 410-sprint car main and led only the first two laps before Hodnett took over for what would be the win.

A volley of caution flags on laps three, four, seven and eight would hamper Hodnett’s pace at the front and repeatedly give Haas a second chance at the lead but Hodnett was up to the challenge each and every time.

Finally after the lap nine restart, the final circuits went non-stop with Hodnett amassing a 3.6 second lead by the halfway point while racing through traffic.

Invader Logan Schuchart was the show of the race after starting 24th in the field.

The World of Outlaws regular was already up to 12th on the fourth lap.

On the lap eight restart, Schuchart blasted to the outside of Tim Wagaman and Lance Dewease to take over eighth before further advancing his cause.

At the halfway point he was up to seventh and with 10 laps to go, he was sitting sixth.

And he would not stop there as he rallied into the top five, getting around Brian Montieth with seven laps to go.

But that would be the end of his advances as he then fell backward and off the pace during the final four laps.

In the end, Hodnett took the checkers 5.584 seconds ahead of closest pursuer Freddie Rahmer, who took the spot on the 12th lap.

Third went to Haas followed by Danny Dietrich and Brent Marks.

Sixth through 10th went to Lucas Wolfe, Brian Montieth, Lance Dewease, TJ Stutts and Rodney Westhafer.

Heats went to Montieth, Wolfe and Westhafer with Dan Shetler scoring the consolation race.

Bernheisel led all 15 laps of the super late model main with Coleby Frye racing in second for the majority of the event before withdrawing during the final few laps, handing second to Gene Knaub.

Tyler Horst, Frye, Sam Rial and Matt Murphy followed Bernheisel to the finish.

With what amounted to a sail mounted atop his late model machine, Bernheisel was turning laps in the 17-second bracket during the main event, which was within the same bracket as sprint car winner Hodnett during the sprint car main.

Frye also had the sail-like feature atop his mount.

Williams Grove Speedway closes the season next Friday, October 14 at 7:30 pm with the running of the 54th annual Champion Racing Oil National Open, sanctioned by the World of Outlaws Craftsman Series sprint cars.
