Wilmot Warrior: David Gravel wins O’Reilly Auto Parts Badger 40 at Wilmot Raceway

Scores his sixth World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series victory of the season

By Tony Veneziano

WILMOT, Wisc. - July 30, 2016 - David Gravel has been under the weather over the course of the last week, but he didn't let that slow him down on Saturday night in the O'Reilly Auto Parts Badger 40 at Wilmot Raceway in Wisconsin. The native of Watertown, Connecticut, led all 40 laps to claim his sixth World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series win of the season.

Gravel has now won in both of his starts with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series at Wilmot Raceway and has 13 career wins with the series.

"It's been a rough last six or seven days for me and I'm just starting to feel better," said Gravel, who drives the Big Game Treestands machine for CJB Motorsports. "The car was just awesome. I've only had one other car ever that has driven perfect like that. There was a lot of yellows and that gave Donny (Schatz) a lot of shots at me and chances to try to change it up a little bit."

Gravel started on the pole and withstood five cautions flags. On four of the double-file restarts, he had seven-time and defending World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series champion Donny Schatz lining up beside him. Gravel used strong restarts each time to sprint to a sizeable lead in open track.

"Some yellows helped me not have to deal with lapped traffic," explained Gravel. "There at the end, I passed a couple of lapped cars and had a pocket with about five to go. I think I saw Donny poke his nose, and I knew I had to get going and that gave me a little cushion. Our car was so good on the top that it just drove itself, really. Typically, we struggle on restarts with tire pressure and laying over on the right rear. That car was great tonight."

The win for Gravel was his sixth of the season, which surpasses his previous career-high of five, which he set in 2014. The 24-year-old has now won four times on short tracks this year, after conquering the third-mile Wilmot Raceway.

"I wanted to beat the five wins I had a few years ago and did that tonight," he noted. "Hopefully we'll be able to keep this rolling the rest of the year."

The race got off to a rocky start, with the yellow flag waving three times in the first dozen laps. The first yellow of the race came out on the second lap, when Jacob Allen, who was running second, spun. Just past the halfway point of the race, while in traffic, Schatz was able to get his nose under Gravel in turns three and four, but wasn't able to make a pass. The final 19 laps of the race went caution-free, putting the leaders into lapped traffic, some of which was heavy at times.

Schatz, who started sixth, ran the high side of the track most of the 40-lap race. With just a handful of laps remaining he gained ground on Gravel in lapped traffic, at one point, splitting two slower machines coming off turn four, but was never quite able to get a run on the leader.

"I'm happy to get a good finish," said Schatz, driver of the Bad Boy Off-Road J&J for Tony Stewart Racing. "Riding the rim is not really my game, but I can make it my game if I have to. I just kind of bouncing off the cushion in (turns) four and two. I thought I had a good shot at him, but if I got off the cushion, I couldn't go anywhere. Getting there was one thing and passing was another."

The O'Reilly Auto Parts Badger 40 wrapped up a busy month of July for the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series and Schatz finished first or second in 10 of 13 races in the month, with his lowest finish in that span being a seventh-place effort.

"These guys did a pretty good job here and we had an incredible July," said Schatz. "Tomorrow July is over, so the next time we get to race is August and we are worried about the big races next weekend and beyond."

Joey Saldana finished third on Saturday night, after starting fourth. The veteran driver battled Schatz for the second spot throughout the second half of the race, getting several runs, but was unable to make a pass. For Saldana, the third-place showing was his third-straight top-five finish at Wilmot.

"This is a great team and I am lucky enough to drive this car," said Saldana. "Everyone is working hard and we are hanging in there. We are just missing something little. Being on the front straightaway, hopefully you can win some of these races. We'll keep doing what are doing and try to stay as positive as possible. It's easy to get down and beat up. We'll take this and go on to Pevely and hopefully get a couple of spots better."

Brad Sweet finished fourth on Saturday night, with his Kasey Kahne Racing teammate Daryn Pittman rounding out the top-five. Sweet opened the night by setting fast time for the ninth time this season. Shane Stewart finished sixth, with Jason Johnson seventh and Jason Sides, who ran in the top-three for a portion of the race, finishing eighth. Greg Wilson picked up the KSE Hard Charger Award, coming from 17th to ninth. Logan Schuchart rounded out the top-10.

The World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series enters the final stretch of the 'Month of Money' on Friday, Aug. 5 as the series kicks off the Ironman weekend at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 weekend. STEVE OWINGS CLAIMS SECOND CONSECUTIVE TRAIL-WAY 358 SPRINT CAR WIN Montgomery, Walls & Foster Other Friday Night Winners

HANOVER, PA (7/29/2016) – The saying goes, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Westminster, Maryland’s Steve Owings, along with the Westminster Transmission/Valentine Motorsports #35 crew are pondering that very quote after claiming their second consecutive Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic 358 Sprint Car win, Friday night at Trail-Way Speedway.

An inversion draw placed Cody Fletcher on the pole for the start, and despite leading the first eleven laps while holding off eighth starting David Holbrook, who made several attempts for the lead, Owings raced his way around both drivers by lap 12 and never looked back.

“I don’t know about Groundhog’s Day… but I did feel a lot better being third with the #77 (David Holbrook) and the #66A (Cody Fletcher) ahead of me to see what they were doing. I just waited and finally had the opportunity to make my move.”

Owings mentioned in victory lane that he and his crew plan to race at Trail-Way in the 358 Sprint Car division next Friday night.

“It had been a while since I had been in victory lane… this feels good!”

Fletcher crossed the line second followed by the Big Mike’s Crabhouse Hard Charger, Jeff Halligan, who started 17th in the 25-lap feature and finished third. Dale Hammaker and Holbrook completed the top five.

Rounding out the top ten were JB Cunningham, Jr., Zach Euculano, Shane Smith, Randy Whisler and Seth Kearchner.

Qualifiers for the 18 “358” Sprints were won by Holbrook, Tyler Walton and Kearchner.

Ninth starting, Lucas Montgomery, won by the length of a bumper at the line, beating race-long leader Mason Chaney, for his ninth career Trail-Way win and first of the year.

Chaney joined Montgomery in victory lane following the close call at the flag stand. Trail-Way Speedway announcer, Scott Hockensmith, told Chaney he had only lost by the length of a bumper. Chaney’s response to Montgomery was to “take off his bumper.”

Following Montgomery and Chaney across the line were Chad Earnst, Bill Diehl and Justice Forbes, completing the top five.

Qualifiers for the 21 Legends were won by Chris McKinney and Montgomery.

Brian Walls raced from last place (13th starting position) to win his fourth career 20-lap Street Stock feature, and second of the 2016 racing season.

Outside polesitter, Aaron Beard, led from the drop of the green until a lap four restart saw polesitter Zach Myers take over the top spot. Walls moved into second on lap eleven and claimed the lead only three laps later.

Second through fifth were Marshall McMullen, Zach Myers, Beard and Alex Updegraff.

Heats for the 13 Street Stocks were won by Zach Myers and Michael Goodwin.

Jeff Foster held off the charges of Julio Perez and Justin Oberlin to claim the 15-lap Limited Stock win. Perez and Oberlin attempted several passes throughout the feature, almost succeeding on lap ten when the lapped car driven by Creden Sponseller, Jr. became a factor. Sponseller nearly collected Foster, but Foster never stopped his car, which allowed him to restart in the lead.

Foster held on to claim his second career Trail-Way Limited Stock win and first of 2016, followed by Rohrbaugh in second, and Robbie Carroll, who came back from restarting in the rear after a caution on the initial green to finish third. Fourth and fifth went to Perez and Oberlin.

Heats for the 20 Limited Stocks were won by Oberlin and Matt Chronister.

Next Friday, August 5th, Trail-Way hosts the 358 Sprints along with the Limited Stocks, Street Stocks and 600 Micro Sprints. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. with heats beginning at 7:45 p.m.

The following Friday, August 12th, Trail-Way hosts a jam-packed schedule featuring the Precise Racing Products 358 Late Model Series along with the Limited Stocks and ServiceMaster Clean Central PA Legends. The Street Stocks will participate in the second leg of the Susquehanna/Trail-Way Street Stock/Xtreme Stock Shootout. The Large Tire Street Stocks will make their first appearance since 2013 at Trail-Way in a 25-lap, $600 to win Showdown, featuring racecars from Susquehanna, Big Diamond, Hagerstown and Winchester Speedways. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. with heats beginning at 7:45 p.m.

Freddie Rahmer Claims First Victory At Williams Grove Speedway Friday URC/ESS 360 Sprint Nationals To Hodnett

Mechanicsburg – Freddie Rahmer scored his first ever Williams Grove Speedway sprint car win on Friday night, racing ahead of Alan Krimes and Greg Hodnett to the win as he etched another Rahmer name on the historic oval’s all time win list.

In the $4,000 to win, 25-lap URC/ESS 360 sprint car nationals, Greg Hodnett wired the field from the pole for the victory to record a hat track in 360 action at the track to date this season.

Matt Campbell took the lead from the pole at the start of the 410-sprint car main followed by Steve Buckwalter and Rahmer, who started sixth.

Rahmer wasted very little time putting himself into contention, blasting by Buckwalter for second on the second tour only to see Buckwalter reclaim the spot.

Rahmer finally completed the pass on the fifth circuit with a low side move in the third corner and Campbell and Rahmer entered the backmarkers on the eighth lap.

Campbell held a good lead and ran a good line while blasting around the top of the speedway and forced Rahmer to track him down in order to get his shot at the victory.

With 12 laps to go, the Salfordville 20-year old pilot was poised to begin challenging for the top spot and after three laps of trying Rahmer again blasted low into the third turn, underneath Campbell this time, to take control.

However at the same time as Rahmer was going out front, tenth starter Greg Hodnett was motoring into the top spots as well along with Alan Krimes.

Hodnett took second on the 17th tour and was chasing Rahmer through heavy traffic, trying to take the win away.

But strong, deliberate moves by Rahmer in traffic kept him comfortably ahead of Hodnett and then just when he appeared home free, a caution flag with two laps to go slowed the pace, now finding Krimes in second for the restart.

Rahmer would drive uncontested over the final mile of competition to take the payday by .953 seconds over Krimes, Hodnett, Campbell and Buckwalter.

Sixth through 10th went to Brian Montieth, Danny Dietrich, Brock Zearfoss, Lucas Wolfe and Mark Smith.

Heats went to Wolfe, Hodnett and Doug Esh with the consolation going to Brandon Rahmer.

The initial start of the 410 sprint main was red flagged when Lancaster’s Doug Esh flipped on the frontstretch after starting eighth.

Hodnett would cruise to victory in the 25-lap URC/ESS 360 sprint main, finding his pace slowed only twice but both times he was able to pull away with the lead.

Aaron Ott got by Davie Franek for second on the third tour and tried to chase Hodnett but keeping him in sight was a challenge.

Ott instead was challenged on a lap 12 restart by New York’s Chuck Hebing, who bolted to his outside in the first and second turns to take over the second position.

But Hebing too was unable to keep pace with Hodnett although on just one occasion Hodnett did get held up in traffic for a few laps to allow Hebing to close the gap slightly.

However Hodnett still picked up the win, his third this season at the track in 360 sprint action, by 3.174 seconds over Hebing followed by Ott, Robbie Stillwaggon and Franek.

Sixth through 10th went to Josh Weller, Lucas Wolfe, Curt Michael, Kyle Reinhardt and Jason Schultz.

Heats for the 34 cars in action went to Hodnett, Franek, Adam Carberry and Ott with the consolation going to Jordan Thomas.

Dale Blaney Opens I-79 Summer Shootout presented by Classic Ink USA with Victory at Eriez Speedway,
I-79 action continues Saturday at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway

HAMMETT, PA (July 29, 2016) - For the first time since June 19, the “Low Rider” Dale Blaney earned his place in Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions victory lane, this time at the Eriez Speedway in Erie, Pennsylvania, during round one of the I-79 Summer Shootout presented by Classic Ink USA. The Hartford, Ohio, native, who started third on the feature grid, took command of the 30-lap main event on lap 18, driving under race leader Sheldon Haudenschild at the exit of turn two to solidify a $5,000 payday. For Blaney, the victory was his sixth of the 2016 Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions season, bumping his career win total to 133. It was the first All Star appearance at Eriez Speedway since 1981.

“It has been a while,” Dale Blaney explained. “It’s been a while since we’ve consistently run good. We got better every time we got on the race track tonight. We really didn’t qualify all that well, but we got better in the heat race, made some gains in the dash, and now we are up here. I knew we had a good car from the get-go. I can’t thank everyone enough: Big Game Treestands, Muddy, CH Motorsports with Janet Holbrook and Aaron Call, Todd Quiring out in Minnesota - they all play a huge role in this and I can’t thank them enough for this opportunity.”

Sheldon Haudenschild and Kraig Kinser led the 23 feature starters to green at Eriez Speedway on Friday, July 29. By the completion of lap one, Haudenschild had already established a clear advantage, utilizing his all-too-familiar top groove of the speedway. Dale Blaney settled himself into second, followed by outside polesitter Kraig Kinser. Those three would eventually create some separation, racing in that order until lap 15 when Kinser made contact with a lapped car causing the Bloomington, Indiana, native to get upside-down. Kinser walked away unharmed.

Green flag conditions returned to the speedway with Haudenschild still on the point, followed by Dale Blaney and now “Downtown” Danny Holtgraver, who moved forward from sixth on the grid. Despite a few attempts to work underneath Haudenschild during the first 15 circuits of the 30-lap main, Blaney made his first true bid for the top spot on lap 18, driving underneath Haudenschild as he slipped over the cushion between turns one and two. From that point, Blaney raced forward carefully; navigating traffic through the bottom and middle lanes of the speedway while still holding off challenges by Sheldon Haudenschild and Danny Holtgraver. Those three raced nearly nose to tail for several circuits until caution lights reappeared on the final lap, creating a green-white-checkered scenario. Unfortunately for Holtgraver, he was the victim, spinning at the entrance of turn one after making contact with a lapped car.

The first green-white-checkered attempt turned unsuccessful, leading to a second. Back-to-back two-lap shootouts proved to be no distraction for Dale Blaney, eventually rolling under the final checkers on top of the running order. Sheldon Haudenschild finished second, followed by Cap Henry, Cole Duncan, and Chad Kemenah.

“We really got things going during that A-main,” Blaney said. “I just had to be patient with my tires and get rolling around the bottom. Sheldon (Haudenschild) was working up the race track and I was keeping myself closer to the bottom. My car really came on when it needed to. (Haudenschild) got over the top early in the race, too, but I couldn’t really capitalize on it. I just kept pressing him and showed him my nose a few times. I wanted him to keep racing harder and harder and it worked out.”

The inaugural I-79 Summer Shootout presented by Classic Ink USA featuring the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions will continue on Saturday evening, July 30, with a visit to Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway near Imperial, Pennsylvania. “Dirt’s Monster Half-Mile” will showcase “America’s Series” for the 15th time in the track’s storied history on Saturday evening, awarding a $5,000 top prize, as well as points toward the $3,000, I-79 Summer Shootout championship point fund. Dale Blaney is the most recent Arctic Cat All Star to visit PPMS victory lane, earning top honors on August 2, 2015.

Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway will open pit gates at 3:00 pm on Saturday afternoon, July 30. The drivers meeting is set to begin at 5:30 pm, followed by hot laps at 6:30 pm. More news and information can be found on the Web at www.ppms.com.

STEVIE SMITH CLAIMS THUNDER CUP AND FIRST GRANDVIEW WIN; HODNETT, HOWARD, AND VONDOHREN GRAB WINS IN 4 FEATURE SHOW TUESDAY NIGHT

BECHTELSVILLE, PA (July 26, 2016) – Broken Arrow, Oklahoma’s Stevie Smith captured the 410 Sprint Car Thunder Cup trophy, the $5,000 top-prize, and his first career Grandview Speedway win this past Tuesday Night when the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series presented the 2nd Annual 410 Sprint Thunder Cup event at the Berks County dirt track. The race night sponsor was Pioneer Pole Buildings.

Greg Hodnett picked up the win in the 410 Sprint car make-up feature event, rain halted from PA Sprint Car Speedway. Duane Howard claimed the 30 Lap, $3,000 NASCAR 358 Modfied main event while Craig VonDohren picked up the win in the 358 make-up feature event.

Kunkletown, PA’s Ryan Smith started on the pole of the 35 lap Thunder Cup main event setting a rapid pace and hitting lapped traffic by the fourth circuit. Smith aboard the Warko No. 94 swapped grooves dodging lapped cars with Stevie Smith in the second position. Stevie Smith – the veteran – made his move on the fourth circuit pulling outside the ‘Kunkletown Kid’ – but it was the younger Smith making a bold move dodging between lapped cars to hold on to the top spot.

A lap 10 red flag for Freddie Rahmer – who got upside down after contact with a lapped car – halted the action for the only time of the race.

During the red flag, Ryan Smith discovered an issue with the radiator hose on his No. 94 machine draining the water out of his sprint car, handing the lead over to ‘The Black Bandit’ Stevie Smith.

On the restart, Stevie Smith powered away while Tim Shaffer battled Danny Dietrich and Greg Hodnett for the second spot.

With Smith at the helm at the halfway point, all eyes were on Myerstown, PA’s Brent Marks moving forward from the 11th starting position into the fifth spot. Smith held a full straight-a-way lead while Shaffer, Hodnett, Dietrich and Marks battled for the runner-up position.

Dietrich would overtake the second spot and close on Smith through the later portion of the event but it was ‘The Black Bandit’ maintaining the lead and rolling under the checkered flag in first position. Danny Dietrich finished in second, Greg Hodnett in third, Tim Shaffer in fourth and Brent Marks in fifth.

Tim Shaffer set the Quick Time with a lap of 12.603, Qualifying Heat Races were won Lucas Wolfe, Alan Krimes and Davey Sammons.

Thomasville, PA’s Greg Hodnett claimed his ninth Thunder on the Hill victory dominating the final 20 laps of the rain-delayed 35 lap PA Speedweek feature event. Hodnett set a rapid pace from the get go, pulling away from the lead with Brent Marks in tow. Hodnett weaved in and out of heavy lapped traffic holding off Brent Marks – who was closing on the leader. Hodnett picked up the $5,000 winner’s share, Marks settled for second, Lucas Wolfe in third, Aaron Ott in fourth and Stevie Smith rounding out the top five finishers.

Duane Howard, of Oley, PA, led the Mike Petruska Racing No. 66 to victory in the 30 lap NASCAR 358 Modified feature event. Howard started on the front row with Brett Kressley and charged to the front from the opening green flag. Howard switched lanes from the middle to the top spot holding off Kressley’s No. 357 machine.

A lap 10 yellow for Boyertown, PA’s Ryan Watt slowed the field for the only caution of the evening.

On the restart, Howard held on to the top spot with Kressley in second, while a three-car battle for the third spot developed between Craig VonDohren, Jeff Strunk and Modified rookie Mike Lisowski – with Craig VonDohren getting the best of the war.

With Howard setting the pace, VonDohren charged around the outside of Kressley for the second position and set his sights on the leader, closing with five laps remaining.

Howard would go on to pick up the win, VonDohren settling for second, Modified rookie Brett Kressley in third aboard the Norm’s Save Station No. 357, Jeff Strunk in fourth and Mike Lisowski in fifth – in less than half a dozen Modified starts.

Modified Heat Races were won by Jeff Strunk and Rick Laubach.

Oley, PA’s Craig VonDohren launched from his second place starting spot in the 30 lap make-up feature event, setting a rapid pace early on with Duane Howard, Rick Laubach and Jeff Strunk right on his tail. A bold three-wide maneuver around Howard and Strunk moved Laubach into the second spot setting his sights on VonDohren. Howard would pull pitside a lap later. Laubach closed the gap on the 12th circuit pulling alongside the race leader before retiring just two laps later. Strunk inherited the second place position and challenged VonDohren for the lead with five laps remaing. VonDohren would claim the $3,000 top prize, Strunk would settle for second, Jimmy Horton in third, Brian Hirthler in fourth, and Brett Kressley in fifth.

Schatz Comes Out On Top of Three-Way Battle at Ohsweken Scores his 16th World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series victory of the season

OHSWEKEN, Ont. - July 26, 2016 - A three-way battle for the lead dominated Tuesday night's Six Nations Showdown at Ohsweken Speedway with Donny Schatz, Jacob Allen and Brad Sweet jockeying for the top spot. Ultimately, it was Schatz who broke away from the pack and claimed his 16th World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series victory of the season.

The win was the third in the last four seasons for Schatz at Ohsweken - the series' only stop in Canada this season.

"Always good to get a win," Schatz said. "Canada has been very good to me. I love coming up here… Glad to be at Ohsweken tonight. We're going to go back to the (United) States and try to win some more."

On the drop of the green flag, Jason Johnson very quickly shot out front but the move was short-lived as Schatz battled by off of turn four and led the first lap. As Schatz moved, Sweet followed with Allen in hot pursuit.

On lap three, Allen battled past Sweet for second off of turn two as Schatz tried to gain distance on the drivers - Sweet charged back.

As Schatz caught lapped traffic an already short-distance between first and second closed even tighter. On lap eight, Sweet took over the lead in his No. 49 Ollie's Bargain Outlet car from Schatz. Schatz was not ready to give up as the two-way battle extended to a three-way battle with Allen still in the mix. Schatz retook the lead from Sweet off turn four.

Next it was Allen's turn as he took over second in his No. 1A Mark Pell Tire Service/Marty Thompson Investments car and began challenging Schatz for the lead. He stayed close through the succeeding laps and on lap 18, Allen took advantage of lapped traffic and pulled side-by-side with the No. 15 Bad Boy Off Road/Chevrolet Performance car. As the two drag raced into turns one and two, Allen threw the slider, trying to close off of two. Schatz however had the advantage on the exit and held on to the top spot.

The first and only caution of the night flew on lap 26. As the field took the green flag one last time, single-file, Schatz led Allen, Sweet, Pittman and Johnson.

Allen again tried to get around Schatz with a slider in turns one and two but Schatz again held the top spot. Two laps later, it was Sweet with the slider around Allen to take over the second position. Sweet worked to run down Schatz in the closing laps as Allen had his hands full with his teammate Logan Schuchart, who was the night's KSE Racing Hard Charger, advancing 10 positions to finish in fourth.

At the line it was Schatz, Sweet and Allen, who had to close the door on the car behind him through the final distance to finish on the podium.

"There was times that we had to move around the race track and I could get by guys on the race track," Schatz said. "That's what keeps it fun. Those other guys got to us and you kind of just had to keep moving around and stay patient. I didn't want to see that yellow at the end. I knew I just to carry my speed."

Schatz extended his lead after the night's feature to 245 over second place Daryn Pittman.

For Sweet, the second-place finish was a good momentum builder after a tough month that has not gone as planned.

"Donny is always going to be tough. I got by him there for one second. In lapped traffic I was a little too committed to the top. I just couldn't quite roll the middle as good as him. Jacob had the car for maneuvering around the race track."

"It's been a long month for us, so it's nice to get some momentum on our side."

Allen rolled onto the front stretch in third after what has been a good month for his Shark Racing team, including a win for his teammate Logan Schuchart at Cedar Lake Speedway two and a half weeks ago. The finish is the second podium run of the season for Allen.

"Down in one and two at the beginning it was a little tricky. You had to slow up a lot but coming off it was really nice and it seemed like they were getting loose hanging off. That went away down in one and two and they were getting around the top really good and that was the place to be.

It was a really fun race. And I'm just really blessed to be up here and race with those guys. My team does such a great job and I can't thank my dad and those guys enough for what they do. I'm blessed to be out here and having a lot of fun."

RICO ABREU SCORES $12,500 FOR DIRT CLASSIC INDIANA VICTORY AT KOKOMO SPEEDWAY!

KOKOMO, IN (July 23, 2016) - Rico Abreu scored big on Saturday night at Kokomo Speedway in Kokomo, Indiana, earning the inaugural Dirt Classic Indiana title worth $12,500 against Tony Stewart’s Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions. Abreu took command officially on lap 24 of the 40-lap main event, using a textbook slide job to work beyond Wooster, Ohio’s Sheldon Haudenschild. The victory, earned from the inside of row three, gives Abreu three on the season with the Arctic Cat All Stars, increasing his career total to five.

“I just want to thank all of the fans for coming out tonight,” Rico Abreu said. “There was a lot stuff going on in Indianapolis. For you guys to choose to come racing with us instead is really cool and we all really appreciate it. I gotta thank the Dirt Classic staff, Tony Stewart, and the All Stars for making this happen. We just really enjoy doing this. Even on the bad nights, we still really enjoy this, and we should, because we are all pretty lucky to just be out here racing.”

Lined up according to points accumulated on Friday and Saturday, Friday night’s Prelude to the Dirt Classic Indiana winner Christopher Bell and five-time Arctic Cat All Star winner Sheldon Haudenschild led the 24 feature starters to green. Haudenschild jumped to the early advantage, leading Bell and Rico Abreu at the completion of lap one. Unfortunately for Haudenschild, early momentum would cease with red flag conditions halting the field on lap two. Randy Hannagan, Bryan Clauson, and Kraig Kinser were all involved and unharmed.

After a caution on lap two for a spinning Tyler Courtney, green flags waved for a third time with Sheldon Haudenschild still in charge, once again followed by Christopher Bell and Rico Abreu. Abreu made a big bid for the runner-up spot on lap four and made it stick, using another one of his textbook slide jobs in turns one and two.

Meanwhile, Haudenschild continued to roll the very topside of the speedway, opening up his advantage by a near straightaway. Traffic started to come into play for the first time on lap nine, slowing some of Haudenschild’s momentum. Abreu tried to work traffic as quickly as he could, sliding two and three cars at a time, but still had trouble closing in on the Haudenschild Racing/No. 93 entry.

By lap 24, Abreu worked his way within reach of the top spot and capitalized, using a monster slider to work underneath Haudenschild for the lead in traffic. Once obtaining control, Abreu never stumbled, surviving the remaining 16 circuits, as well as two additional cautions, to earn himself a trip to Dirt Classic Indiana victory lane. The St. Helena, California, native navigated the very top-shelf of the speedway for the majority of his campaign at the front of the field, opening his advantage to a near straightaway even during traffic.

“I was pretty good everywhere here tonight,” Abreu explained. “I could run the top and I could run the bottom. I knew the bottom was going to slow down eventually so I decided to work my way up to the top. I thought I heard somebody working up on the outside of me. I just worried about getting to the top and staying smooth. I had so much fun here tonight. Kokomo always puts on a great race. I am very happy to win in a winged sprint car here.”

After a four car battle for the last two podium spots, Jamie Veal and Chad Kemenah emerged. Veal worked his way forward from fourth to finish second, scoring a second consecutive podium performance during the Dirt Classic Indiana doubleheader at Kokomo Speedway. Kemenah climbed from the outside of row three to finish third.

Up next on the 2016 schedule, the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions will return to the Keystone State for the I-79 Summer Shootout presented by Classic Ink USA; a trio of events along the Interstate 79 corridor in Western Pennsylvania. “America’s Series” will visit three facilities during their three day campaign, each hosting a full, Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions program worth $5,000 to the main event winner. In addition, a $3,000 point fund will also be awarded to the weekend’s top racers.

The I-79 Summer Shootout presented by Classic Ink USA will take shape on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, July 29-31, beginning with action the the Eriez Speedway in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Friday night, July 29. Action will resume on Saturday, July 30, at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway in Imperial, Pennsylvania, followed by a visit to the Tri-City Raceway Park near Franklin, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, July 31. It will be the final Western Pennsylvania appearance for the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions in 2016.

Those seeking additional information regarding the I-79 Summer Shootout presented by Classic Ink USA should visit each facility live on the Web, or stay connected at www.allstarsprint.com.

Eric Tomocek Powers To The Front For 360 Makeup Victory Smith Earns 360 Nightcap Win With Late Race Pass On Malle Shuster

FRYE TAKES RACE 4 IN MOON SHINE CAMO ROUTE 35 LATE MODEL SERIES; NASCAR VETERAN STREMME DRIVES TO MID-ATLANTIC MODIFIED CHECKERS; WRAY WINS FIRST CAREER PRO STOCK RACE

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – On a hot summer night, nearly 100 race cars packed the pits at Selinsgrove Speedway Saturday with a pair of 360 sprint car features, a Moon Shine Camo Route 35 Late Model Challenge Series race, the Mid-Atlantic modifieds, and pro stocks all on a blockbuster racing program.

Eric Tomacek of Abbottstown and Mark Smith of Sunbury split the victories in the 25-lap sprint car races, while Coleby Frye of Dover won his first race of the year in the 25-lap Moon Shine Camo Route 35 Late Model Challenge Series. NASCAR veteran David Stremme of Davidson, N.C., drove to a victory in the first-ever 20-lap Mid-Atlantic modified series race, with Kurt Wray of Beavertown posting his first career pro stock win in the division’s 15-lap feature.

Selinsgrove Speedway will present the 16th Annual Mach 1 Chassis National Open for 360 sprint cars Saturday, July 30, paying $10,000 to win as part of the inaugural Mid-Atlantic Crown Series “Weekend of Money” that includes the Lelands.com 360 Nationals at Williams Grove Speedway Friday, July 29, and concludes with the Cole Cup at the Utica Rome Speedway in New York Sunday, July 31. The super late models and pro stocks will also be on the July 30 racing card at Selinsgrove Speedway.

Eric Parker took the lead early in the makeup feature for the 360 Sprint Cars. The race was being run from the Jeff's Auto Body & Recycling Center Driver & Fan Appreciation Night July 16th. Michael Walter wrestled the top spot away from Parker on lap six. Eric Tomecek also moved by Parker for the second spot a few laps later. Mark Smith was in a battle for the third spot when his engine left go setting up a lap 17 restart.

Just before the yellow flag Tomecek used the inside line to drive into the top spot. Robbie Stillwaggon took over the second spot in a short run before another yellow flag was needed. Stillwaggon tried the inside line on the restart, but Tomecek drove back into the race lead on the outside to stay for good. Davie Franek moved past Stillwaggon for second at the end of the event. Jason Shultz and Walter rounded out the top five finishers.

Sixth through tenth place spots went to TJ Stutts, Adam Carberry, Derek Locke, Ryan Kissinger, and Eric Parker. Ryan Kissinger was the race’s IBEW hard charger. Kissinger went from 22nd to finish in ninth.

The 360 Sprint cars competed in a full show after the makeup feature was completed. The Newville Family of Companies bonus was again on the line for 358 Sprint Car teams going into the night as well. Mallie Shuster started from the front row and showed the way early on. Adam Carberry reeled in the race leader in lap traffic, but then tangled with a lap car ending his bid for the win.

Eric Parker had his 358 engine in on Saturday night and Parker was in a battle for the lead with Mallie Shuster on lap 13 when Shuster was in lap traffic. Parker slide a little too high on the race track and Davie Franek slid by. Franek's time in the podium spot was short lived as his right rear tire blew out.

Shuster continued to show the way with Parker and 11th place starter Mark Smith now in the mix. Smith worked by Parker and looked like he was out of time to take the race lead away until a lap 22 yellow flag was thrown. Smith used a swooping move on the front stretch to take away the top spot from Shuster on the restart and drive to his third win of the season. This was the final race before next weekend’s $10,000-to-win National Open for the 360 Sprint Cars. Shuster, Derek Locke, Larry Kelleher, and TJ Stutts were the top five finishers.

Jason Shultz, Eric Parker, Robbie Stillwaggon, Mike Walter, and Ryan Kissinger rounded out the top ten. Eric Tomecek, Ryan Kissinger, and Mallie Shuster were the heat race winners for the 27 car field. The IBEW hard charger for the second feature was Phil Walter.

Coleby Frye had revenge on his mind when he pulled into Selinsgrove Speedway on Saturday night in round four of the Moon Shine Camo Route 35 Challenge Series. Frye almost grabbed a win the last time the Late Models had a Route 35 Challenge Series ace at the track, but fell a little short. The story was written a little different on Saturday night.

Frye made a big move on the outside early and began chase of race leader Tony Adams. Adams led until lap 18 when Frye made a move on what he called in victory lane the only mistake Tony Adams made all night. Once out front Frye fended off all challengers including a late race charge from Andrew Yoder. Jeff Rine got to the third spot, but could only watch the leaders drive away as he lost a right rear tire at the end of the feature running third. Frye, Yoder, Donnie Schick, Adams, and Mike Lupfer were the top five finishers.

Bryan Bernheisel came across in sixth just ahead of Rine who entered the night the Moon Shine Camo Route 35 points leader. Steve Campbell, Dave Brouse Jr, and Chad Hollenback were the top ten across the finish line. Andrew Yoder, Donnie Schick, and Tony Adams won heat races for the field with Derrick Casner the consolation winner.

David Stemme used a dominate run to claim the first checkered flag for the Mid Atlantic Modifieds ever at Selinsgrove Speedway. Stremme started in the eighth spot and charged into the race lead on lap four. A caution flag on lap seven reset the field, but Stremme pulled away again when the green flag was thrown. Modified point leader Mike Potosky pulled into second before the yellow flew again on lap 15.
Potosky slowed and dropped out on lap 18 as Stremme drove to the win. Rick Hulson was second followed by Dan Davies, Gary Long, and Mike Reynolds. Heat races for the 18 car field went to Hulson and Long.

Brandon Moser had mechanical issues in last week's A&A Auto Stores Pro Stock competition. This week he wasted no time bolting into the race lead when the green flag was thrown on the feature event. Moser slide a little too high after a few laps of leading and the lead fell into the hands of Matt Hornberger. Hornberger did not hold the hot potato long before Tommy Slanker took over. Slanker did all he could to run the inside line, but Brad Mitch was able to drive by into the top spot.

Mitch was in a good spot until the yellow flew on the last lap, setting up a one lap shootout. Mitch didn't get the start he needed and Kurt Wray drove by to lead the event. Wray was looking for his career Selinsgrove Speedway win. Although the record book will show he only led one lap, it was the most important one. Wray made the inside move by Mitch for the win. Slanker, Hornberger, Nate Stroup, and Jeff Ceballo were the top five. Mitch was sixth. He was trailed by Matt Wilson, Jeremy Kline, Lori Croop, and John Troxell. Slanker and Mitch took heat race checkered flags. 17 Pro Stocks were in completion.

STEVE FANNASY BECOMES EIGHTH DIFFERENT SUPER SPORTSMAN WINNER WITH SUSQUEHANNA WIN Randy Christine, Jr. Repeats in 358 LM; Travis McClelland Legends Winner and Chris Anderson Tops Road Warriors

Steve Fannasy added his name to the list of winners this season in Credit Connection Auto Sales Super Sportsman competition at Susquehanna Speedway.

The Dauphin, PA racer became the eighth different winner in ten Super Sportsman features this year after leading the second half of Saturday night’s 25-lap feature.

Fannasy and Justin Foster led the Sportsman field to the green as Foster grabbed early control of the event. Foster would lead the first 11 circuits before encountering trouble on the 12th lap when he hit the fourth turn wall to bring out a caution.

That turned the lead over to Fannasy, who then kept the field at bay over the final 13 laps to take his first win of the season aboard his own No. 11.

New Jersey racer Tom Wyckoff started fourth and finished in the runner-up spot ahead of sixth starting Chad Smith, 11th starting Scott Dellinger and fifth starting Rick Barr.

Chad Criswell crossed sixth after starting 14th with Tony Jackson seventh ahead of 16th starter Russ Mitten, Doug Dodson and Jay Fannasy.

Heats for the 28 Super Sportsman were won by Teddy Thomas, Steve Fannasy and Justin Foster.

Manchester’s Randy Christine, Jr. made it two straight wins in 358 Late Model action as he sped to the win in the 25 lap event.

Christine started third but led flag to flag and held on through five caution periods during the feature.

Following Christine under the checkers were Dave Latsha, 13th starter Chase Billet, 18th starting Randy Stoudt and 12th starting Troy Miller with Travis Mease, Sam Gallagher, Matt Murphy, Patrick McClane and Steve Billet rounding out the top 10 finishers.

Donnie Farlling, Gallagher and Latsha were heat race winners. Farlling turned the wheel of his late model over to Jake Jones for the feature event.

Travis McClelland took the lead on lap three of the ServiceMaster Clean Central PA Legends 20 lap feature and scored the feature win over Hayden Pascoe, Scott Houdeshell, Reed Salony and Rick Hartwig.

Salony and Mason Chaney won heats for the 18 car field.

Chris Anderson led all 15 laps of the non stop Road Warrior feature to become the fourth different winner in as many races. He was followed by Justin Wagaman, Travis Brown, Robbie Carroll and Jeff Skenosen.

Anderson and Carroll won heats for the 16 Road Warriors.

Dewease Scores Win for Posse at the Grove

A Little Luck and A Lot of Skill Help Lance Dewease to Summer Nationals Win

Retains coveted Morgan Cup trophy for the Pennsylvania Posse and pockets $25,000

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - July 23, 2016 - Lance Dewease's World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series victory in the the Champion Racing Oil Summer Nationals finale at Williams Grove Speedway on Saturday night took a lot of hard work and a little good luck.

Dewease, who spent much of the first two-thirds of the feature looking for a line around Joey Saldana, battled to the lead on one restart, had do it again after the caution flew before a lap was completed and then, after the caution flew on the final lap for Aaron Ott, who spun near the start/finish line, ran out of fuel as the open red was called.

"I was out (of fuel) about six laps before that," Dewease said. "It kept shutting off going down the straight away. I just slowed way out of the throttle so I could try to make it to the end, took the white, it sputtered a little going up the back stretch, I thought I was good and we come of four for the checkered and the yellow comes out. I thought, man, we're done… Everything went our way tonight."

In addition to claiming $25,000, Dewease also kept the Morgan Cup at Williams Grove for the local, Pennsylvania Posse fans. The win is the second of the season for Dewease who stood in victory lane at Williams Grove on May 20.

Notably, the win was the 10th series victory of Dewease's career which tied him with Johnny Herrera and his car owner Don Kreitz Jr. for 33rd on the all-time wins list.

Daryn Pittman, who won the previous night, had the early momentum as he scored the quick time award, a Heat race win and the Dash win which put him on the pole of the 30-lap feature.

It was Joey Saldana though who jumped out to the early lead in his No. 83 Roth Motorsports car. Dewease, who started in fourth got around Greg Hodnett for third on lap seven and then, on a restart, powered his No. 69K Kreitz Oval Track Parts/Sharman Builders car around the No. 9 Great Clips car of Daryn Pittman to take over second.

Through multiple restarts, Saldana held off Dewease. With 11 laps remaining, the No. 48 of Danny Dietrich brought out the caution after spinning on the front straight. When the field returned to green Dewease battled to the lead but before a lap could be completed, the caution again flew after a large piece of a nose wing ended up in the middle of the racing groove in turn two.

Saldana took the lead back but was not able to hold off Dewease, as the No. 69K again battled to the lead. As Saldana fell off Pittman took over the second and David Gravel took over third.

Dewease cruised through the final laps, building a large lead on Pittman in second. As Dewease rounded the final corner, the caution again flew for Ott who had spun and stopped at the start/finish line.

Just as series officials called the open red after hitting the maximum number of laps on a fuel load, Dewease ran out of fuel. After refueling for the final start, the field restacked single file with Dewease leading Pittman, and by that point, the No. 51S Trans East Equipment/Miller Bros. Chevrolet car of Stevie Smith.

Dewease easily retained the top spot on the green-white-checkered. As he crossed the finish line much of the front grandstand rose to their feet to cheer for the No. 69K. Pittman, a former regular in Central Pennsylvania, finished in second with Smith in third.

With Kreitz and Hall-of-Fame mechanic Davey Brown at his side, Dewease celebrated the win.

"Everything is about (Don Kreitz) and (Davey Brown) on this deal," Dewease said. "I'm just the guy driving it and I'm just having so much fun this year. It's just a pleasure."

For their part, Brown and Kreitz were jubilant in victory lane.

"I just couldn't ask for a better driver," Brown said. "He's just so good, I can't believe it."

"I can hardly talk," Kreitz said. "I've got tears in my eyes. Lance did a hell of a job driving the car and the moves he made in it."

The win ties the Outlaws vs. Pennsylvania Posse battle at two wins to two wins. The two sides will pick up the battle again at the end of September for the National Open at Williams Grove.

Pittman, who closed out the weekend with a win and second place, said he just was not quite quick enough to start the feature, but commended his Kasey Kahne Racing with Mike Curb team for a solid weekend.

"We got beat by a better car and that car has been hard to beat all year," Pittman said of Dewease. "We got one on him last night by starting in front of him. I finally found a decent line there at the end and felt like I could at least maintain with him and sort of keep his pace but at the end of the day he was just quicker than us."
