Mitten claims fourth career Lincoln Super Sportsman victory; Stough comes from 12th to win Central PA Legends
ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 7/16/2016 –Chase Dietz outran the Dietrichs to pick up his first win of the year in his family-owned #2D in 25 laps of torrid 410 sprint car racing at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night.
“I’m out of breath. Holy crap!” exclaimed Dietz after exiting the Haas Shocks/Godfrey Racing sprinter in victory lane, “We were okay. We weren’t the fastest, but the way the track was, we just had to be up there and wheel it.”
Dietz started third and ran there behind leader Billy Dietrich and polesitter Tim Wagaman for the first eight laps. The lone red then came out for Dwayne Gutshall, who did a soft roll after getting sideways in turn two.
“It just worked out for us. I got by Timmy and that red came out,” said Dietz, “I didn’t get a good restart, and Robbie (Kendall) got me and I got him back. I was like ‘Man, I gotta get back up the wheel real quick.’
“I was staying with Bill. I would gain and then lose and I figured once we got to lapped traffic it was time to get going and make my move. It worked out to our favor. I knew from Billy’s standpoint I wouldn’t want to be in the same position because you’re kinda vulnerable out there. He had a good run and has had some bad luck. It was a fun race for sure.”
Dietz finally drove around Dietrich exiting turn two in heavy lapped traffic of lap 21. The two were side-by-side at the end of the lap, but Dietz didn’t take control until exiting turn two of lap 22. From there, he drove away to his second career Lincoln win, with Billy and 12th-starting Danny Dietrich crossing second and third. Completing the top five were Kendall and Tyler Ross.
“This has been a really tough season for us. We get here when we can,” said Dietz, “It’s a family-owned team and there are a ton of people I can’t thank enough that even allow me to be here. Troy Godfrey has poured his heart and soul into me right now and supplies the car for me to even be able to get out here. My grandpa has given us a motor to run. What we have sitting here is what we got, and that’s it. But we come here to win.”
Sixth through tenth were Gerard McIntyre, Jr., Freddie Rahmer, points leader Alan Krimes, Brian Montieth, and Adam Wilt.
Heats for the 34 410 Sprints were won by McIntyre, Dietz, Cory Haas, and Billy Dietrich, with Frankie Herr winning the consolation.
Newville’s Russ Mitten, now in his 27th year of racing, ended a month-long dry spell by claiming his fourth career Lincoln win in the 25-lap super sportsman feature. Mitten started third and took the top spot away from polesitter and race-long leader Gregg Foster on lap seven. He dominated the rest of the way, taking the checkered 2.15 seconds ahead of Foster, with Doug Dodson, 11th-starting Mike Enders, and Scott Geesey rounding out the top five.
Heats for the 25 Super Sportsman were won by Dodson, Kenny Edkin, and Scott Dellinger.
Bob Stough came from 12th starting spot to score his sixth career Lincoln win in the 20-lap main event for the Central PA Legends. Stough was passing a car a lap in the late going, and drove around both Lucas Montgomery and leader Mason Chaney as the three crossed under the flag stand with two laps to go. Chaney settled for second, with Chad Earnst, Montgomery, and Harlon Leppo completing the top five.
Heats for the 30 Central PA Legends were won by Leppo, Justin Mitchell, and Reed Salony, with Tony Mrakovich winning the consolation.
