LANCE DEWEASE WINS SPRINT SHOWDOWN AT SUSQUEHANNA Chase Dietz Gets Second 358 Sprint Win

By Brad Vores for Susquehanna Speedway

YORK HAVEN, PA…10/28/17

Lance Dewease survived some mid-race drama with Logan Schuchart before capturing the big $5,000 payday in Saturday’s 30-lap BAPS Auto Paints and Supplies 410 Sprint Showdown at Susquehanna Speedway.

The event closed the curtain on the 2017 racing season at Susquehanna and in Central Pennsylvania.

Chase Dietz dominated the 25-lap 358 Sprint car feature for his second win of the season.

After setting quick time and winning the Dash, World of Outlaws regular Logan Schuchart took control of the 410 Sprint car feature as Joey Saldana settled into the runner-up spot.

As Schuchart set the pace, a lap four incident brought out a yellow flag when contact was made between Danny Dietrich and Greg Hodnett that also collected Freddie Rahmer and Cory Haas. Heavy damage to Hodnett’s car sidelined him for the day as was Dietrich and Rahmer.

On the restart, Anthony Fiore brought out a red flag after flipping.

Saldana got high on the restart allowing Lucas Wolfe and Dewease by as Dewease began his charge to the front after starting sixth.

Dewease made the race winning pass on Schuchart with 14 laps complete but action got heated when Schuchart attempted to get back around Dewease but ran over the front end causing front wing damage to the Kreitz Racing 69K machine. After some dramatics while the field was under caution, Schuchart pitted with a flat tire and rejoined the rear of the field.

Despite the damage, Dewease was able to keep Saldana at bay for the remainder of the event to score his 19th career Susquehanna win, 13th overall this season and second of the year at the York Haven oval.

Saldana finished second ahead of Wolfe, ninth starting Brock Zearfoss and 10th starting Brian Montieth with Mark Smith earning the Hard Charger coming from 18th to sixth ahead of Anthony Macri, Haas from the rear of the field, Brandon Rahmer and Schuchart.

Schuchart set fast time over the 30 car field with a lap of 15.655 seconds while heat races were won by Dewease, Ryan Smith and Dietrich. Brett Michalski won the consolation.

Dave Brown, Jr. led the first two laps of the 358 Sprint car main before Dietz took control and never looked back.

A late race red for a flip by Jake Eldreth would close the field on the Spring Grove racer but he was not to be denied the win as he took the checkered flag.

Brent Shearer raced by Kevin Nouse on the final turn to steal the runner-up finish with Nouse, who started 12th settling for third over Chris Frank and 10th starter Brett Wanner with Cody Fletcher earning the Hard Charger after starting 20th, Tyler Ross, Mike Bittinger, Troy Wagaman, Jr. and Brown completing the top ten.

Nouse, Wanner and Eldreth won heats for the 31 car field. CJ Tracy was the consolation race winner.

ZEARFOSS, HODNETT AND BISHOP CLOSE PORT ROYAL SEASON WITH WINS

PORT ROYAL, Pa. – With over 80 sprint cars in the pit area, Port Royal Speedway capped off the highly successful 2017 season on Saturday night with Brock Zearfoss, Greg Hodnett and Austin Bishop claiming the 410 sprint, URC sprint and 305 sprint mains, respectively.

In the 25-lap 410 sprint main, polesitter Dylan Cisney beat Brock Zearfoss into the first turn only to see Zearfoss take the lead as the pair shot onto the backchute.

The reigning 2017 track champion, Zearfoss of Jonestown set a blistering pace around the oval during the early going, entering the backmarkers on the seventh tour with Cisney and fourth starter Danny Dietrich in tow.

At the halfway point, Zearfoss had a 1.1 second lead over Cisney as the race for second heated up between Cisney and Dietrich.

After repeated attempts, Dietrich was able to secure second spot and complete lap 18 just before the only caution flag of the race unfurled for a stopped Kody Lehman.

Dietrich followed Zearfoss high into the first corner when action resumed and then made his swooping attempt for the lead as the pair shot into the third turn.

However the Gettysburg driver came up short of completing his slide job attempt in the fourth turn and instead settled into second, where he would finish.

The $4,000 victory was the fifth of the season at the Port Royal oval for Zearfoss who took the checkers by a 1.926 second advantage.

Anthony Macri of Dillsburg rode home a fine third followed by Cisney and Jason Shultz.

Sixth through 10th went to 18th starter Greg Hodnett, Lucas Wolfe, Steve Buckwalter, Davey Sammons and Cory Haas.

Heats went to Macri, Zearfoss, Justin Barger and Shultz in what was two rounds of heats for each of two heat groups.

Lucas Wolfe led the first lap of the 25-lap URC sprint main before fourth starter Chad Layton took over and entered lapped traffic on the sixth tour.

Greg Hodnett started seventh in the field and bolted to the front of the race with lightning speed during the early going, up to third with five laps recorded.

As Layton worked through traffic, Hodnett rapidly closed the gap on the two leaders before pulling off a high-flying two-car pass of both Wolfe and Layton for position plus at least one backmarker in the third and fourth turns of the ninth lap.

And once at the front, Hodnett drove off from the field only to be slowed by the caution flag with nine laps to go.

Wolfe got a clean shot on the restart only to see Hodnett drive off before another yellow with six laps to go again bunched the field.

Another restart produced the same result with Hodnett staying out front only this time 10th starter Brock Zearfoss motored by Wolfe into second before trying to run down the pacesetter.

Zearfoss did his best to close the gap but came up short at the finish by .537 seconds.

Wolfe was third followed by Curt Michael and Mark Smith.

Sixth through 10th went to Jason Shultz, Justin Barger, 21st starter Chuck Hebing, Layton and Josh Weller.

Heats went to Wolfe, Hodnett, Chris Coyle and Barger with Hebing scoring the consolation race.

With the win, Hodnett scored $2,000 and also swept both URC events held at Port Royal in 2017.

Austin Bishop of Elverson wired the 20-lap 305 sprint main with a flag to flag performance.

The only caution of the race took place with just one lap to go and it produced a wild final lap and a four-car race for the win back to the line.

Jeff Miller restarted second with Nate Gramley and 12th starter Kyle Smith following and Miller went for the lead when action resumed.

But Bishop moved down to block his advance on the backstretch and Miller climbed his tail tank before jerking sideways toward the inside fence and then somehow saving the car.

This bottled up Gramley and allowed Smith to motor by both he and Miller during the final half lap.

Miller crossed the line in third followed by Gramley and Cale Riegle.

Sixth through 10th went to Dylan Shatzer, Nick Sweigart, Kassidy Kreitz, Scott Lutz and Drew Ritchey.

Heats went to Miller, Shatzer and Smith with the consolation race going to Brad Mellott.

KYLE SMITH RECORDS FIRST SUSQUEHANNA 305 SPRINT WIN

Zechman, Beard, Powell and Carroll All Score First Wins of Season

By Brad Vores for Susquehanna Speedway

YORK HAVEN, PA…10/14/17
It’s been  a good two weeks in Central Pennsylvania for South Egremont, Massachusetts racer Kyle Smith.

The young driver dominated Saturday night’s 20-lap Freedmont® Mortgage Lending PASS/IMCA Sprint car feature at Susquehanna Speedway as he visited victory lane for the first time ever at the York Haven oval. Smith’s Susky win backs up his big win a week earlier in IMCA Sprint action at nearby Port Royal.

Four first time season winners also emerged Saturday night as Bobby Beard won the Bernheisel Race Cars 358 Late Models, Randy Zechman took the win in the Morgan Paving/Aqua Fun Pools Street Stocks, Bill Powell won the Superior Homes Extreme Stocks and Robbie Carroll got the win in the Road Warriors.

Starting on the pole aboard his No. 17NY Sprint, Smith dominated the event that saw him pull away to a 2.765 margin of victory. Two early race cautions was all that kept the field close as Smith became the eighth different winner in the nine 305 Sprint car mains in 2017.

Darren Miller chased Smith the entire distance and settled for second over Dave Grube, Ken Duke, Jr. and Billy Ney with Jaremi Hanson, 2017 Susquehanna track champion Zach Newlin, Rick Stief, Colby Dice and Stephanie Dodson completing the top ten finishers.

Kyle Ganoe, Andrew Hake and Miller were heat winners for the 25 cars.

Donnie Hendershot was the Artwerks Hard Charger coming from 18th to 12th.

Brian Shuey led the first 11 laps of the 20-lap BRC 358 Late Model main when sixth-starting Bobby Beard took control.

Once out front, it was all Beard as he pulled away from the field to post his first win of the year by 2.968 seconds. He became the 11th different winner this season in late model action.

Shuey, Eric Hohol, 2017 track champion Randy Christine, Jr and Sean Merkel finished in the top five trailed by Steve Billet, Tim Murphy, Dan Zechman, Steve Todorow and Taylor Farlling. Murphy was Artwerks Hard Charger.

Hohol and Beard were heat winners for the 15-car field.

It was all Randy Zechman in the 20-lap Morgan Paving/Aqua Fun Poos Street Stock feature after taking the lead with nine laps complete.

Mike Buckley led lap one before Kyle Saylor took the lead and held that point until fifth starting Zechman took over.

Zechman drove away taking checkered flag by 4.202 seconds for his first win of the year and 12th different division winner.

Jim Palm came from eighth to finish second ahead of Saylor, Mike Potts and Kevin Sigler with Jimmy Combs, Brad Bingaman, Elvin Brennan, Howard Williams and Matt Wampler completing the top ten.

With his 11th place finish, division sponsor Craig Morgan captured the 2017 Street Stock track championship.

Heats for the 19 cars were won by Buckley and Zechman.

Bill Powell emerged with his first career Susquehanna win and 100th career overall win as he was in the right place at the right time in the Superior Homes Extreme Stock feature.

Racing third as the white flag flew, Powell had a front row seat when 2017 track champion Alex Updegraff got into Kyle Emig, who led laps 2 through 19 and spun him. The two raced side by side for half of the race but the contact put both to the back as Powell held on for the win on the final lap over Patrick McClane, Travis Horan, 13th starting and Artwerks Hard Charger John Frye and Jeff Gill were the top five.

Johnny Palm and Emig won heats for the 19 Extreme Stocks.

Robbie Carroll led all 15 laps to win the Road Warrior feature over Travis Brown, Kyle Rohrbaugh, Ryan Underkoffler and Justin Dashler.

SCHATZ TAMES PORT ROYAL FOR 19TH OUTLAWS WIN OF SEASON, SECOND CAREER AT OVAL

Mike Altobelli wins Mid Atlantic Mods
PORT ROYAL, Pa. – Eight-time World of Outlaws champion Donny Schatz of Fargo, Nd., tamed Port Royal Speedway on Saturday night, scoring his second career oval victory, worth $10,000 after holding off Lance Dewease to the finish.

In the 25-lap Mid Atlantic Modified main it was Mike Altobelli scoring the $1,000 victory.

Reigning 2017 track champion Brock Zearfoss started on the pole of the 30-lap World of Outlaws main for sprint cars flanked by Jason Sides with Schatz starting in third and Dewease starting in ninth spot.

Zearfoss of Jonestown took the lead at the start over Sides however Schatz motored into second on the third lap as Zearfoss held a 1.669 second lead.

Alone out front, Zearfoss was setting a blistering pace and entered the rear of the field on the seventh tour with Schatz in tow and Dewease up to fourth.

Zearfoss worked his way through traffic in fine fashion over the next seven laps and was keeping Schatz at bay, still holding a one second lead when the races first caution flag unfurled on the 14th tour for a stopped Logan Schuchart.

Zearfoss chose the inside lane for the double file restart with Schatz in second and Dewease restarting third with Brad Sweet in fourth.

And Zearfoss turned in a great restart when action resumed, outracing Schatz into the first corner and turning back a slide job attempt by Schatz for the lead.

However racing close with Schatz, nose to tail at times, proved hard to handle for Zearfoss as the pair raced into the second half of the race and on the 18th tour when Zearfoss entered in the middle in the first turn, leaving the top lane open, that was all Schatz needed to blast into control.

Moments after taking the lead, on the 19th lap, the second caution flag of the race appeared regrouping the pack, this time finding Schatz choosing the inside pin for the restart.

Dewease blasted into second on the restart, coming up .67 seconds behind Schatz at the line with 10 to go but was then outdistanced by Schatz during the waning laps before a final yellow flag set up a dramatic finish.

When green reappeared, Schatz went high into the first turn and Dewease blasted in low, going out in front briefly as he let the car slide up across the track to get command.

However Schatz would later credit Dewease with allowing just enough room for him to jet back by as the pair shot out of the second turn and that sealed the deal for Schatz, who went on to pick up his 19th overall checkers of the season by .792 seconds ahead of Dewease.

After starting 10th, Daryn Pittman finished on the podium in third followed by Sweet and Johnson.

Sixth through 10th went to Dave Blaney, Danny Dietrich, Sheldon Haudenschild, Jac Haudenschild and David Gravel.

Heats for the 40-car field went to Jason Johnson, Sheldon Haudenschild, Sweet and Schatz with Tony Stewart claiming the B Main and Zearfoss winning the dash.

Overall fast time in qualifications was set by Jason Johnson with a lap time of 15.704 seconds, an average speed of 114.162 mph.

Rick Hulson led the first six laps of the Mid Atlantic Modified main before Mike Altobelli took over to speed to the victory.

Hulson would finish second with Dan Davies ending up third.

By finishing fourth in the main, Brad Kling secured the 2017 Mid Atlantic Modified series title.

Heats for the mods went to Mike Corbin and Altobelli.

KYLE SMITH COMES FROM MASSACHUSETTS FOR PORT ROYAL 305 BLUE COLLAR CLASSIC WIN

Stock cars go to Weaver, Renninger and Chronister

PORT ROYAL, Pa. – Kyle Smith of South Egremont, Massachusetts, scored the big victory in the sixth annual Port Royal Speedway Blue Collar Classic for the IMCA Keystone RaceSaver 305 sprint cars on Saturday night.

Smith surged during the final five laps to drive down leader Tyler Reeser and swoop past for the $1,350 win in the final two turns of the 25-lap feature event.

The 20-lap Mason Dixon Shootout limited late model main was taken by Justin Weaver after Weaver also made a late race pass for the victory.

The make-up Butch Renninger Memorial for xtreme stocks went to local driver Herm Renninger after he led 17 laps of the main and the four cylinder main was scored by Matt Chronister.

Nearly 140 cars filled the pits for action in the big October event.

Polesitter Nick Sweigart led only the first lap of the Blue Collar Classic for the 305 sprint cars before Tyler Reeser took over.

In a race for the track title, Reeser tried pulling away after he got to the front while point leader Jeff Miller battled into third spot behind Darren Miller.

Reeser hit the halfway point of the race with a .7 second lead over Darren Miller and Jeff Miller and then just as Jeff Miller put a move on for second with 10 laps to go, he lost control and spun the car in the fourth corner, ending his title hopes.

The restart saw 12th starter Kyle Smith taking the green from fourth spot and Smith raced up to third when action resumed.

With five laps to go, Reeser still had a .898 second lead over Darren Miller however Smith was clearly getting faster during the final stages, using great runs off of the cushion on the second corner to gain ground.

He took second with three laps to go and then ran down the leader to duck to his inside in the third and fourth turns as the leaders headed toward the finish line.

Smith was able to come out of turn four as the leader with Reeser glued to his tail back to the checkers.

Smith’s margin of victory was a scant .080 seconds.

Reeser ended up second and recorded the 2017 Creasy Signs Port Royal 305 Sprint Series track title.

Darren Miller was third followed by Nick Sweigart and Ken Duke Jr.

Sixth through 10th went to Zach Newlin, Jeff Geiges, Drew Ritchey, Scott Lutz and Jeff Miller.

Heats for the 57-car field went to Reeser, Dylan Schatzer, Darren Miller, Kyle Smith, Sydney Prince and Jeff Miller.

Twin consolations went to Austin Bishop and Greg Dobrosky with Tim Tanner Jr. setting fast time with a lap of 18.307 seconds.

Kyle Ganoe led all 15 laps of the Founders Cup non-qualifiers race for the 305 sprints to earn a guaranteed starting spot in the 2018 Blue Collar Classic main.

James Lichliter led the first 16 laps of the limited late model main over fourth starter Justin Weaver.

But Weaver’s bottom groove came in as the race wore into the late stages and with three laps to go, Weaver drove into control for the $1,000 victory.

Lichliter rode home second followed by George Dixon, Derrick Garman and Jim Yoder.

Heats went to Lichliter, Garman, Dillan Stake and Dixon. Andrew Stotler took the consolation race.

Herm Renninger took control from Bob Bussey on the third lap to speed to the Renninger Memorial xtreme stock main.

Bill Powell raced into second on a lap four restart and ended up finishing second and scoring the 2017 Juniata Junction xtreme stock track title.

Kevin Imes rode home third followed by Mike Goodwin and Ryan Zook.

Heats went to Renninger, Josh Bender and Imes.

Polesitter Matt Chronister wired the field for the four cylinder feature win.

Chronister was challenged by Chris Anderson for the win but Anderson would finish second followed by Noah Swank, Tim Campbell and Tim Raup.

Twin heats went to Chris Anderson and Justin Williamson.

305 sprints, 25 laps: 1. Kyle Smith, 2. Tyler Reeser, 3. Darren Miller, 4. Nick Sweigart, 5. Ken Duke Jr., 6. Zach Newlin, 7. Jeff Geiges, 8. Drew Ritchey, 9. Scott Lutz, 10. Jeff Miller, 11. J.J. GRASSO WINS LINCOLN SPEEDWAY 2017 SEASON FINALE

Chase Dietz Wins 358 Sprint Finale, Adrian Shaffer Locks up 2017 358 Sprint Track Title
Travis McClelland Closes Out 2017 Season with All American Outlaw Win

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 10/7/2017 – JJ Grasso of Middletown, DE, drove his family-owned No.37 sprinter flawlessly through lapped traffic and held off 7-time 2017 winner Danny Dietrich and 2017 track champ Brian Montieth to pick up the win in the 30-lap $4,000-to-win 410 sprint season finale.

York’s Chase Dietz picked up the win in the 358 Sprint finale, while York’s Adrian Shaffer secured the 2017 track title with his fourth-place finish. Travis McClelland symbolically closed out the 2017 racing season at Lincoln Speedway with the win in the 20-lap All American Outlaw feature at the end of the night.

The 2017 finale was also a celebration of the lives of two special people involved in racing at the historic Pigeon Hills oval. Promotor and car-owner Bob Leiby was honored with the first annual memorial race in his honor after being rained out on September 2nd. This was coupled with the 29th running of the traditional Manufacturers Appreciation Night in honor of Hank Gentzler. 10’s of thousands of dollars in manufacturers goods were awarded in individual prize packages to the 410 sprint drivers starting the feature event. All this was made possible by the efforts of Pancho’s Racing Products.

Grasso, who started outside the front row, hooked onto the bumper of polesitter Eric Tomecek at the drop of the green and followed the Abbottstown racer into lapped traffic with Dietrich, Montieth, and Lucas Wolfe right behind through 10 laps.

At the beginning of lap 11, Grasso dove inside the leader entering turn 1 and slid up trying to secure the lead. Tomecek tried to hang onto the cushion and his lead, but slipped up off the cushion and into the outer wall, rolling his sprinter onto it’s side.

Grasso now had the lead. But right behind were Dietrich, Montieth, Wolfe and Greg Hodnett with 20 laps remaining. A daunting task for any driver.

Grasso went to work on the restart and used the clear track to his advantage, building a slight advantage as they entered lapped traffic once again on lap 17.

Both Dietrich and Montieth closed to gap on the leader and with 10 laps remaining the race was on through lapped traffic.

Then with five laps remaining Cole Young crashed on the frontstretch, bringing race’s final caution and set up a five-lap race to the checkered.

On the restart Grasso got up to speed flawlessly and never wavered as he took the checkered five laps later for the win over Dietrich, Montieth, Wolfe and Hodnett.

Completing the top-10 were 19th-starting Freddie Rahmer, Anthony Macri, 12th-starting Alan Krimes, 16th-starting Cory Haas, and 13th-starting Brandon Rahmer.

Heats for the 25 410 Sprinters were won by Matt Campbell, Hodnett, and Macri, with Freddie Rahmer winning the consolation.

8th-starting Chase Dietz passed race long leader Steve Drevicki on the sixth lap and raced away to his first 358 sprint win of the year at Lincoln in the finale.

Two cautions, both involving spin-outs by Brie Hershey on the eighth and 14th laps, allowed Drevicki to remain close to the leader throughout.

But Dietz was clearly the class of the field this night and easily took the checkered 1.93-seconds ahead of Drevicki for the win.

Cody Fletcher came out on top of a race-long battle with Adrian Shaffer for the third spot. Even though Shaffer had to settle for a fourth-place finish, it was enough to clinch the 2017 358 Sprint track title for the York racer.

12th-starting Brent Shearer completed the top-five.

Rounding out the top-10 were 13th-starting Troy Wagaman, Jr., 17th-starting Matt Findley, 18th-starting Tyler Ross, 20th-starting Chris Frank, and polesitter Jon Stewart.

Heats for the 33 358 Sprinters were won by Stewart, Shearer, Drevicki, and Kyle Denmyer with Chandler Leiby winning the consolation.

6th-starting Travis McClelland of Littlestown and polesitter Jim Minter of Sharpsburg, MD, waged a race-long battle in the 20-lap All American Outlaw feature with McClelland coming out on top by a mere .69-seconds in the 2017 finale at the Pigeon Hills oval.

Gary Moreland, Sr., Joe Davis, and Brad Alexander rounded out the top-five.

Heats for the All American Outlaws were won by Minter and McClelland.

This race closed out the 2017 racing season at Lincoln Speedway. The 2017 Lincoln Speedway Awards Banquet on Saturday, November 18th (6 PM-12:30 AM) will cap off the the season to honor the champions, top-10 in points, and give away the annual special awards in celebration of another successful season.

Promoters Don Leiby and Alan Kreitzer have announced that opening day for the 2018 season will be on Saturday, February 24th. Gates will open at noon with 410 sprint car racing to begin at 2:00 p.m.

So the countdown begins, 140 days, to the begin the 66th chapter of racing at the historic “Fabulous Lincoln Speedway”!

KENNY EDKIN DOMINATES FINAL SUPER SPORTSMAN RACE OF SEASON

Potts, Dove and Montgomery All Get Second Susky Wins

By Brad Vores for Susquehanna Speedway

YORK HAVEN, PA…10/7/17
Kenny Edkin put an exclamation point on his breakout season by dominating Saturday night’s 40-lap Fall Harvest King of the Hill presented by Hessiron.com Super Sportsman feature at Susquehanna Speedway.

Edkin’s division leading sixth win of the season came in the season finale for the Credit Connection Auto Sales Super Sportsman

Other winners on the warm October race night included Charles Potts in the Bernheisel Race Cars 358 Late Models, Lucas Montgomery in the ServiceMaster Clean Central PA Legends and Steve Dove in the Morgan Paving/Aqua Fun Pools Street Stocks. Dove was rewarded the street stock win after actual winner Randy Zechman was disqualified after failing post race inspection.

Veteran Rich Eichelberger set the pace for the first three laps of the Harvest Classic before slowing on the speedway to bring out the first of eight caution flags during the main event.

This turned the lead over to 2017 track champion Scott Dellinger who would hold the point until the 10th lap when eighth starting Edkin drove by to take the top spot.

Edkin, of Marysville, pulled away from Dellinger but was kept at bay with all of the yellows but each time, Edkin showed strength by extending his lead.

The final caution of the race flew on lap 32 as Edkin pulled away to a 2.320 second advantage at the checkered flag aboard his family owned No. 75.

Dellinger crossed second ahead of Sportsman 100 winner Frankie Herr, Chad Criswell and 11th starting Gregg Foster with Steve Fannasy, Chase Gutshall, Mike Enders, Garrett Williamson and Justin Foster completing the top ten.

Enders set fast time over the 27 car field in time trials with a lap of 18.656 while heats were won by Dellinger, Edkin and Fannasy. Justin Foster earned the Hard Charger after starting 17th.

Eric Hohol led the first two laps of the 20-lap BRC 358 Late Model feature before spinning out.

Charles Potts took command after starting second and would hold the lead but it was Dan Zechman who came on strong during the final laps to make this one a thriller as Potts raced around the inside of the track while Zechman pounded the top looking for the lead.

But Potts would prevail by a scant 0.169 of a second for his second win of the year over Zechman. Track point leader Randy Christine, Jr. crossed a distant third over Bryan Bernheisel, Brian Shuey, JR Rodriguez, Jake Moser, Steve Billet, Sean Merkel and Jed Latshaw, the race’s Hard Charger after lining up 20th.

Christine, Zechman and Shuey won heats for the 21 car field.

Randy Zechman dominated the caution-marred 20 lap Street stock main and crossed first  but after failing post race inspection, Steve Dove was rewarded with his second feature win of the year.

Defending track champion Mike Potts was second over ninth starting Jimmy Combs, 12th starting Joey Hoffer and 15th starting and Hard Charger Kyle Saylor competing the top five. Rounding out the top 10 were Brandon Wanner, Kevin Sigler, Matt Adams, Brad Bingaman and Scott Thunberg.

Heats for the 21 street stocks were won by Mike Buckley and Zechman.

Ninth-starting Lucas Montgomery came away with the win in the thrilling 20-lap ServiceMaster Clean Central PA Legends feature.

Harlon Leppo led the first 13 laps before Montgomery took the lead as he then had to fend off late race challenges from Haydon Pascoe before taking the win, 0.214 seconds ahead of Pascoe with Leppo crossing just 0.428 seconds back in third. Fourth went to Scott Houdeshell over 12th starting Mason Chaney.

Susquehanna Speedway returns to action Saturday night, October 14 with final
appearance of the season for the Freedmont® Mortgage Lending PASS/IMCA Sprints and the Bernheisel Race Cars 358 Late Models. Joining these two divisions will be the Morgan Paving/Aqua Fun Pools Street Stocks, Superior Homes Extreme Stocks and the Road Warriors. Racee time is 6PM.

Dietrich Swaps Lead With Campbell Seven Times In Final Laps To Close Grove Season With Sprints Win

Bryan Bernheisel takes super late models
10/6/17
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mechanicsburg – Danny Dietrich came out on top of a furious battle with Matt Campbell during the last few laps to pick up the victory in Friday night’s season ending sprint car main at Williams Grove Speedway.

And in the super late model main Bryan Bernheisel took the win over his father Jim Bernheisel to close out the season’s competition.

Trying to pick up his second win in under a month, Matt Campbell started on the pole of the 25-lap 410 sprint main and blasted into the lead over Dietrich when action began.

Campbell entered the rear of the field on just the fifth tour with Dietrich in tow however the Fawn Grove driver performed flawlessly in traffic to keep Dietrich at bay despite some intense battles as he worked through the back of the pack.

At the halfway point, Campbell was doing everything right to keep his lead over Dietrich with nearly a one second advantage.

With 10 laps to go, Campbell was still flawless, working both sides of the speedway as Dietrich and Brock Zearfoss kept pace although not able to make any bids for the win.

But with three laps to go, the races only caution flag unfurled, clearing the way for Campbell but also placing the second and third place cars directly on his tail.

And when action resumed for the final three laps, Dietrich went to work wrestling with Campbell for the win and during the final mile and a half, the pair swapped the lead no less than seven times as they see-sawed back and forth in every corner.

Campbell had a car that worked perfectly on both sides fo the track and if Dietirch went for the slider, Campbell simply backed off, turned the car and jetted back into the lead after dropping off of the cushion.

But Dietrich finally got the better of Campbell in the final turns, having beaten him into the third corner for the victory, which was his third of the year at the track.

Campbell then slipped just a bit in the final corner, allowing a close following Zearfoss to get by for second.

Dietrich’s margin of victory was .547 seconds over Zearfoss.

Fourth went to Greg Hodnett and fifth went to Lucas Wolfe.

Sixth through 10th went to Daryn Pittman, Freddie Rahmer, Chad Trout, Kody Lehman and Anthony Macri.

Heats went to Zearfoss, Tim Wagaman and Trout.

Bryan Bernheisel led ever lap of the 25-lap super late model main.

His pace was hampered by numerous caution flags including on the initial start and on laps seven, 10, 16 and 22.

But each time the field restarted the younger Bernheisel was able to pull away from the rest of the field.

Coleby Frye took second from Jim Bernheisel on the lap seven restart but Frye then withdrew from the race with 10 laps completed.

Third went to Gene Knaub followed by Tyler Horst and Matt Nailor.

Heats went to Frye and Jim Bernheisel.

The win was the second of Bryan Bernheisel’s career at the Williams Grove oval.

DAVID GRAVEL EARNS $50,000 FOR WIN IN 55TH ANNUAL CHAMPION RACING OIL NATIONAL OPEN AT WILLIAMS GROVE SPEEDWAY

MECHANICSBURG, PA – David Gravel took the lead from Donny Schatz and then took the lead back from James McFadden to win the 55th Annual Champion Racing Oil National Open Saturday night at Williams Grove Speedway.

Gravel’s second win in the National Open was worth $50,000 and was his second win of the weekend in a car owned by Pennsylvania’s Chad and Jenn Clemens. He also won the National Open in 2014.

“It’s crazy,” said Gravel, of Watertown, Conn. “I knew the track was going to end up doing that taking rubber and cleaning up around the bottom. I made a mistake on the restart and gave McFadden the bottom and was able to rail the top in three and four and get him back. I was really lucky that happened because if it didn’t I probably wouldn’t have won the race. I made a mistake, I was able to recover and able to hold on. There’s some cords showing from the tires. I didn’t want that last caution even though I was behind the lapped cars. I knew if I didn’t mess up it wouldn’t be an issue.  I was worried about weight and blowing a tire. I’m happy to get another one here and solidify myself here. Three wins at the Grove in one year is pretty awesome.”

Schatz started second and drove into the race lead over polesitter Gravel and sixth starter McFadden on the opening lap.

Schatz built a quick one-second lead, but Gravel began to close passing Schatz with an inside move off turn four completing lap six as the leader.

Gravel reached slower traffic with a 1.359-second lead as McFadden challenged Schatz. Gravel was stuck behind Jac Haudenschild allowing Schatz and McFadden to close.

Schatz passed Gravel off turn two retaking the lead on lap 11, but Gravel took it back and passed Haudenschild and another car to give himself a two-car cushion.
McFadden passed Schatz in turn two taking over the second spot on lap 17.
