Tony Stewart outruns Rico Abreu and Christopher Bell to score inaugural Rayce Rudeen Foundation Race victory at 34 Raceway

WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa (July 28, 2019) - It took Tony Stewart nearly six months to earn his second Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 victory of the 2019 season, but the victory was well worth the wait, scoring the inaugural Rayce Rudeen Foundation Race win at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, worth $26,000.

Forced to outrun some of the best in the business, Smoke took command of the feature field on lap 11, taking advantage of a mishap by race leader, as well as pole-sitter, Rico Abreu. The mishap, a miscue on the cushion which forced Abreu up and over the edge in turns one and two, allowed Smoke to close-in on the California-native and capitalize.

Although Smoke maintained control for the next 19 circuits, a hornets nest assembled behind the Columbus, Indiana-native with Rico Abreu, Christopher Bell and Aaron Reutzel all battling for top-five positions.

After exchanging slide jobs corner after corner with NASCAR Xfinity star, Christopher Bell, for nearly five circuits, Rico Abreu settled into second, followed by Bell, defending All Star champion, Aaron Reutzel, and Cory Eliason at the final checkers.

The 34 Raceway triumph bumps Stewart’s All Star Circuit of Champions win count to five, his second of the season and his first since February in Ocala, Florida. Adding some extra spark to his five-figure payday, Smoke accomplished his feat with MAVTV Motorsports Network cameras rolling - set to re-air later this year.

“Hats off to Kevin Rudeen and his staff; Natalie Sather and all of Speed Media. Kevin came up to me this winter and had an idea for an event like this. I was happy to be a part of it, but I had no idea I would be in contention to win it. I’m truly honored to win an event that pays tribute to Rayce Rudeen,” Tony Stewart said, driver of the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing/Rush Truck Centers/Toco Warranty/Ford Performance/Sage Fruit/No. 14 sprint car. “I was just happy to be in the dash. Winning the dash set us up for all of this.”

Rico Abreu led the first ten circuits on Sunday night, blasting away to a near-straightaway lead by the time the leaders reached traffic for the first time. Unfortunately, Abreu would only face traffic for a single circuit, as the St. Helena, California-native lost the edge of the speedway and slid off the banking which allowed Smoke to drive by and take command.

“Rico [Abreu] has us all covered, there is no doubt in my mind,” Tony Stewart continued. “He had a big lead and I’m not sure we were ever going to catch him. In fact, when he slipped up over the edge, I wasn’t sure I had enough to catch him before he got back up on the track. Luckily for me, I was in a position to capitalize and it all worked out. This team works so hard. Sometimes things don’t go our way, but tonight they did. I’m pretty sure this is the biggest payday I’ve ever won in a sprint car.”

“When you’re driving that hard, you’re bound to make mistakes,” Rico Abreu said. “I had really good cars behind me, so you have no choice but to race as hard as you can. I just over drove, really. That’s why I love sprint car racing so much. It really brings out your driving ability.”

The All Star Circuit of Champions will enjoy a pair of weekends away from scheduled competition before returning to action on Friday and Saturday, August 16 & 17, with a two-race weekend in Michigan and Indiana. The Series will visit I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, Michigan, on Friday, August 16, before venturing south to Plymouth Speedway in Plymouth, Indiana, on Saturday, August 17.

Although the All Stars are off, technically, many full-timers will be making the trek to Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, for the coveted Knoxville Nationals on August 7-10.

KENNY EDKIN CLAIMS FIRECRACKER 40 VICTORY AT BAPS MOTOR SPEEDWAY

YORK HAVEN, Pa.: Kenny Edkin isn’t focused on winning the Super Sportsman championship at BAPS Motor Speedway.

That doesn’t mean Edkin isn’t chasing points. He is just more concerned about getting the track title for his crew chief Don Koller.

To do that, Edkin needs to get to Victory Lane. He’s done that plenty this season, including Saturday night in the prestigious Firecracker 40 make-up feature to earn his sixth win of the season.

“It’s only July, and we still have two full months and six to eight races to try and get some more,” said Edkin after being informed that he duplicated his highest win total in a single season.

“To be honest, [the championship] means more to Don. I just want the wins. I want to get the championship for him, that’s one thing he’s never gotten.”

Edkin started third on the grid but took his time getting to the front. Chase Gutshall won the Dash to earn the pole, and he took advantage of it by getting the jump on Paul Miller heading into Turn 1.

Miller didn’t go away. He stalked Gutshall for the first five circuits before surging into the lead on Lap 6.

While Gutshall and Miller swapped the lead, Edkin took his time getting to the front. After running around the bottom, he made the decision to go to the cushion in an effort to reel in the leaders.

Edkin took second and set his sights on Miller. He caught the leader on Lap 28 and pulled a slide job one lap later to take over the top spot.

“That was fun,” Edkin said. “The track was pretty fast on the top, and we set the car up to run the bottom after the Dash. It just wasn’t good enough to run with them.

“I had to move to the top to really make time, and I had to run those guys back down. I had to slide someone to take the lead, and I tried to give them as much room as possible and a lot of room to cross over.”

Two laps after Edkin took the lead, the caution was thrown for Dan John who spun. Six laps from the finish, the caution was thrown for the final time.

Edkin pulled away on the final restart. Meanwhile, Garrett Williamson, Russ Mitten, and Gutshall battled for the runner-up spot.

At the finish, Edkin posted the win by 3.666 seconds. Williamson was second, followed by Mitten, Gutshall, and Scott Dellinger.

“That’s something on a six-lap restart,” Edkin said of the margin of victory. “I took the lead on the top from Paul, and the caution came out.

“I was like, ‘Oh, crap, I’m giving this one away.’ I gave two away this season like that. I just had to keep working and get going. I took the bottom on the last restart, and I know Russ is a pretty clean driver. I just took what I could get.”

Mitten was hard charger in the event, as he stormed from 11th to third. Frankie Herr set quick time for the 24-car field with a lap of 17.674. Edkin, Williamson, and Dellinger were heat winners.

Sam Rial and Travis Horan earned victories in a pair of 20-lap Extreme Stock main events. Rial’s win came in a make-up show from June 1.

Donnie Broderick led the first two circuits in the make-up main, before Rial took over. He led the rest of the way, beating Horan, Alex Updegraff, and Mike Goodwin.

In the second Extreme Stock feature, Rial led the first two laps and was in good shape to sweep the night. Horan, who started third, squashed that notion by taking the lead by the completion of Lap 3.

Horan led the next 16 laps and took the win over Rial. Patrick McClane, Broderick, and Updegraff completed the top five.

Rial and Broderick were heat winners for the 14-car field. Goodwin was the hard charger, advancing from ninth to sixth.

STEVE OWINGS RACES TO 3RD 358 SPRINT CAR WIN OF ’19 AT TRAIL-WAY

Hanover, Pa. (7/26/19) – Westminster’s Steve Owings took advantage of a second-chance restart and avoided near disaster with a lapped car, en route to his third 358 Sprint Car win of 2019 at Trail-Way Speedway.

The 25-lap Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic sponsored feature began with a tight, back-and-forth battle between Owings, Jeff Rohrbaugh and Mike Bittinger. The three drivers jockeyed for position while Dylan Norris battled polesitter Andrew Hake for the lead.

“It was a tricky night,” Owings admitted in victory lane. “I tried running the bottom and it was really slick. Rohrbaugh was down there, and I knew he was going to stay down there. He’s the fastest one to go around on the bottom. I started moving up, and the car started pushing and pushing, so I started pushing the wing back, and we got it in a good spot.”

Following a lap 6 caution, Norris was able to pass Hake on the restart. However, three laps later, Rohrbaugh and Owings raced around Hake, immediately setting their sights on the leader. The following lap, Owings maneuvered around Rohrbaugh for the runner-up spot.

A slowing Steven Kisamore brought out the caution, putting Owings inches behind Norris for the next restart. Owings raced around the top of Norris, taking the lead coming out of turn two. However, a car hitting the cone on the restart brought the field back together and erased Owings’ pass for the lead.

Wise to Owings’ game, Norris was able to protect the high side on the next restart, but only through turns one and two. Owings took advantage of the mere inches Norris gave him in turns three and four, zipping around him and taking the lead on the 12th lap.

“Nobody is gonna let you do that two times in a row, and I knew it!” Owings said. “I knew I couldn’t run the bottom, so I figured maybe he might go down just a little bit, enough to give us room to go up around the top.”

Owings’ final obstacle of the night came on the 18th lap as he approached lapped traffic. While passing the slower car of Brody Treaster, Treaster suddenly checked up, sending Owings’ sprinter in the air as he climbed Treaster’s rear wheel.

“That 10 came up there, and he was down, then all of a sudden at the last minute he was up,” Owings said. “We ran over him on the back straightaway, but we were going 15 miles per hour faster. Thank God. I thought the front would’ve been pushed back!”

Owings’ sprint car suffered minimal damage and he maintained the lead over the final seven laps, winning his 23rd career 358 Sprint Car feature at Trail-Way.

Owings’ three wins at Trail-Way and two wins at Lincoln Speedway put him at the top of the 2019 358 Sprint Car win list.

Following Owings across the line was Norris, Rohrbaugh, Cody Fletcher and Bittinger.

Heat wins went to Fletcher and Bittinger.

Jesse Snyder got the monkey off his back with a win in the 20-lap 600 Micro Sprint feature Friday night at Trail-Way Speedway.

“By most people’s standards we are having a good year,” Snyder said, “but to finish second and third most of the year, it felt like this would never come.”

Polesitter Jayden Wolf held a 1.161 second lead when the caution came out for Scott Gesford stopping in turns one and two.

Snyder wasted no time on the restart, passing the rookie driver and taking the lead on the 14th lap.

Snyder crossed the line 2.831 seconds ahead of Wolf, who finished in the runner-up spot. Third through fifth went to Jim Young, Zane Rudisill and Bradley Weber.

Heat winners for the 600 Micro Sprints were Randy Kunkle Jr. and Hannah Riser.

Outside polesitter, Ryan Smith, took the lead on the initial start and held on for 20 laps to win his third career Street Stock feature at Trail-Way Speedway.

“The car was a little loose in the heat race, so we threw the book at it and it worked,” Smith said in victory lane.

Dalton Myers, Danny Beard, Jamie Zentmyer and Justin Wagaman rounded out the top five.

Kyle Martin and Zentmyer were heat race winners.

Robbie Carroll raced his brand new Limited Stock to victory lane Friday night at Trail-Way Speedway.

Carroll led the entire 15-lap feature, claiming his sixth win of 2019 at Trail-Way.

Completing the top five were Matt Worley, Matt Chronister, Travis Brown and Justin Oberlin.

Worley, Brown and Jason Chronister were heat race winners.

Roland Brown won the 20-lap Classic Car Lyle Adcock Memorial. Brown led the entire feature and was followed at the line by Wes Brown, Jim Rost, Neal Reamer and Jimmy Combs.

Heat wins went to Roland and Wes Brown.

REINHARDT SCORES FOURTH 360 SPRINT CAR WIN WITH LAST-LAP PASS; DUKE WINS SECOND STRAIGHT 305 SPRINT CAR RACE; MILLER VICTORIOUS IN LIMITED LATE MODELS; BRUNSON TAKES SECOND ROADRUNNER RACE OF SEASON

SELINSGROVE, Pa. --  Kyle Reinhardt of Neptune City, N.J., came into Selinsgrove Speedway Saturday night as the 360 sprint car points leader by just 10 markers over Jason Shultz of Carlisle.

Late in the 25-lap feature race Reinhardt was going to be happy with a second-place finish but things changed in a hurry and instead he picked up his fourth win of the season with a last-lap pass by Colby Womer of Mt. Pleasant Mills at the wheel of the Westbrook Enterprises No. 1W.

Ken Duke of Selinsgrove won his second 305 sprint car feature in a row at the track.

Shaun Miller of Millerstown, who turned many laps in a pro stock at Selinsgrove, returned to win the 20-lap limited late model feature.

Tom Brunson of Middleburg won the 12-lap roadrunner nightcap.

Selinsgrove Speedway will be back in action at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, with the re-scheduled Kids Night from June. The 360 sprint cars, super late models, pro stocks, and roadrunners will be in action in addition to a classic race car display by the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing on Heller’s Gas Night. Track gates will open at 5 p.m.

Front row starter Colby Womer blasted into the sprint car feature lead followed by Adam Carberry, Ryan Kissinger, Derek Locke and Kyle Reinhardt.

Reinhardt, who started eighth, was fast early in the race and was quickly up to third.  Reinhardt caught Carberry for second and started tracking down Womer.

Kissinger dove under Carberry off of turn four for third but the pair tangled in the second turn bringing out the caution.  This moved Chad Layton and Steve Buckwalter into the top five with Jason Shultz stalking the pair.

Womer got a great restart and left the battle for second to Reinhardt and Locke. Running fourth, Layton slowed and stopped in turn four, slowing the field again.

Locke, who has been fast but unlucky lately continued to dog Reinhardt as Shultz raced into fourth.

With two laps to go Reinhardt drew to Womer’s tail tank.  Womer bobbled on the last lap giving Reinhardt the opening he needed to take the lead and win.

Womer, Locke, Shultz and Buckwalter rounded out the top five.

360 sprint car heats were won by Womer and Locke.

Tyler Reinhardt and Kruz Kepner led the 305 sprint car field to the start/finish line with Keith Prutzman, Devin Adams and Ken Duke in tow.

The field was slowed on lap eight when Kepner hit the second turn fence.

Duke started to dog the Prutzman car and on lap 10 Duke was in second.  Within three laps Duke caught T. Reinhardt and on lap 14 drove by him off of turn two for the lead. Then Wally Eschenhaur brought out the caution on lap 15.

Duke ran the rest of the distance untested winning by 4.035 seconds over T. Reinhardt, Prutzman, Devin Adams and Doug Dodson.

The heats for the 305 sprint cars went to, Doug Dodson, T. Reinhardt, Prutzman and Adams. The B-Main was won by Dominic Melair.

Jim Yoder and Todd Snook shared the front row of the limited late model feature with Yoder grabbing the lead.  Matt Cochran, Troy Miller, and Devin Frey rounded out the top five.

In the early laps Yoder opened a sizable lead with the father-son combo of Troy and Shaun Miller battling for fourth place.   Shaun broke free and worked his way into second.   The caution flag flew on lap 12 for Troy, who stopped on the track.

Shaun Miller tested Yoder high, passing the veteran down the backstretch.  Almost immediately, the red flag stopped the action as Derrick German slammed the outside wall. He was not injured.

After the restart, Cochran and Yoder started a high speed battle for second exchanging the position over the next couple of laps.  With a clear track in front of him, Shaun Miller raced to the checkered flag over Jim Yoder, Cochran, Andrew Yoder and Snook.

A. Yoder, Snook, and Tim Krape were victorious in the limited late model heats.

Tom Brunson grabbed the roadrunner lead followed by Keith Bissinger, Smith Cope, Curtis Lawton and Jake Jones.  Brunson opened a sizable lead but Bissinger slowly chipped away with Cope on his rear bumper.

Jim Collier slammed the fence bringing out the yellow on the last lap.

Brunson wired the field, his second win of the season followed by Bissinger, Cope, Lawton, and Jones.

Roadrunner heats were won by Bissinger and Brunson.

Gio Scelzi dominates All Star visit to Knoxville Raceway and becomes youngest 410 winner in track history

KNOXVILLE, Iowa (July 27, 2019) - Fresno, California’s Gio Scelzi put on a head-turning performance Saturday night at the famed Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, ending his visit not only as an Ollie's Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 main event winner, the first of his career, but also permanently etching his name in Knoxville Raceway history books as the youngest 410c.i. sprint car winner in the track’s 118-year history; Gio Scelzi is 17-years-old.

Scelzi, who started second on the feature grid as the result of his respective dash victory, did not take command for the first time until lap 10, utilizing a slider through turns one and two to work underneath the ‘Madman’ Kerry Madsen. Despite periods of intense traffic during the later stages of the main event, all potential roadblocks proved to be no match against Scelzi’s abilities, actually increasing his command to well over four seconds by halfway, eventually capping the 25-lap program by a margin of victory nearing eight seconds.

Kerry Madsen chased Scelzi to the final checkers, followed by Brian Brown, Cory Eliason, and Aaron Reutzel.

“I couldn't pick a better time to do this than right before the Knoxville Nationals,” Gio Scelzi said in Knoxville Raceway victory lane, driver of the Indy Race Parts/No. 71. “This is a dream come true to win here during an All Star race, and we put it to some damn good guys. I owe it all to this team. They work so hard and I wouldn’t be able to do it without them.”

A pair of cautions before the field could register a lap were the only disturbances during Saturday’s feature program.

Although Scelzi started from the outside-pole position, it was actually Kerry Madsen who earned the initial jump, leading Scelzi and Brian Brown by the flagstand for the first time with Terry McCarl and Cory Eliason also in tow.
Brown made a move on lap two to take the second position away from Gio Scelzi, next setting aim on the top spot occupied by Kerry Madsen.

Unfortunately for Brown, the five-time Knoxville Raceway winner in 2019 would never get the opportunity to challenge Madsen for the top spot, as Scelzi beat him to the punch by taking over the second position on lap nine, next stealing the top spot from Madsen the following circuit.

From that point forward, it was no contest for Gio Scelzi, extending his advantage lap by lap until crossing under the final checkers with a lead pushing eight seconds.

“I think we’ve been getting better and better every time we’ve been here,” Gio Scelzi continued, whose performance will air on MAVTV Motorsports Network later this fall. “Tonight was a good night. Lapped traffic certainly went my way and I was able to push, push, push. I looked up at the scoreboard and saw that ‘21’ up there and it made me think a slider was coming. This is all just unbelievable.”

Tony Stewart’s All Stars will conclude their four-race trek through the heart of the Midwest with a visit to 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, on Sunday evening, July 28, taking part in the highly anticipated, as well as inaugural, Rayce Rudeen Foundation Race awarding a $26,000 top prize. The Sunday night showstopper boasts a total purse nearing $75,000; $26,000-to-win, $2,000 for tenth and $800-to-start.

Those seeking additional news and notes pertaining to the events at 34 Raceway should visit the facility live on the Web at www.34raceway.com.

Donny Schatz earns 20th Williams Grove victory, $20K payday Schatz leads Outlaws top-five to claim his seventh win of the season

MECHANICSBURG, PA – July 27, 2019 – Closing in on 300 wins in his World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series career, the feeling of celebrating in Victory Lane is never lost on Donny Schatz.

However, it was starting to feel that way at Williams Grove Speedway.

The 19-time winner at the speedway had not found victory there since May of 2015. He came close to securing his 20th win several times, including earlier in the year when he finished second to Lance Dewease and Friday night’s Summer Nationals opener where he finished third.

Both times, parked on the front stretch with the rest of the podium cars, he could see Victory Lane. See the confetti shooting into the sky. And see the trophy being delivered to someone other than him.

That changed Saturday night. In the seat of his Toco Warranty No. 15 car, Schatz was pushed past where the third-place car would sit, past the runner-up spot and into Victory Lane at Williams Grove for the 20th time, claiming the Champion Racing Oil Summer Nationals and the $20,000 payday attached to it.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve been standing out here getting the trophy and the flag,” Schatz said. “Hats off to this whole Tony Stewart Racing team. They’ve been digging.”

The reigning champion from Fargo, N.D. was fast all night, but never showed a dominate hand. He qualified fourth. Then won his Drydene Heat race and went on to finished third in the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash to winner Sheldon Haudenschild and runner-up Brad Sweet.

Neither Sweet or Haudenschild had ever won a World of Outlaws Feature at Williams Grove Speedway. Experience was on the 10-time Series champion’s side.

When the race went green, Sweet launched to the lead ahead of Haudenschild, but before the action went any further the red flag was thrown for Shane Stewart, who flipped down the front stretch. Stewart’s crew, along with help from others, got the car repaired in time for him to reenter the race before it went back green.

Once it did, Sweet, again, charged into turn one looking to take the lead from Haudenschild, but the young Wooster, Ohio driver was ready for Sweet this time. Haudenschild stayed side-by-side with the NAPA Auto Parts No. 49 car into turn one but got crossed up at the center of the turn, allowing Sweet to charge by the NOS Energy Drink No. 17 car.

The next corner, Schatz dove underneath Haudenschild and cleared him off turn four to take second-place. A few laps later Haudenschild powered to the inside of Schatz entering turn one, but the veteran driver had the better run on the high side of the track. He kept Haudenschild at bay and began his trek toward Sweet.

The Kasey Kahne Racing driver had already pulled away to about a four-car length lead, while riding the high side. Schatz chose the same line. It began to work in his favor.

Seven laps into the 30-lap Feature, with lap cars in sight, Schatz closed to Sweet’s bumper. A lap later, running the middle of the track, Schatz was able to hammer the throttle quicker than Sweet off turn two and sped by him down the back stretch for the lead.

Sweet wasn’t ready to let a Williams Grove victory and $20,000 slip through his fingers, though. He threw a daring slide job at Schatz through turns three and four, leaving inches between their bumper when he slid in front of him exiting turn four.

He couldn’t keep the momentum going off the corner, though. Schatz powered back underneath Sweet down the front stretch, and using a lap car as a pick, drove by him for the lead into turn one. Not long after, Haudenschild worked his way around Sweet for second, as well.

“Felt like I didn’t drive a great race in lap traffic there,” Sweet said. “Just needed to do a little bit better of a job. That’s what wins or loses these races. You’ve got to move around and get by the lap cars.”

The battle was now between Schatz and Haudenschild. Schatz raced around the bottom line, while Haudenschild powered around the outside. That put him at Schatz’s bumper with 10 laps to go.

The same scenario occurred at Cedar Lake Speedway, where Schatz rode the bottom and Haudenschild rocketed around the high side of the track and passed the Series champion for the win.

This time, though, Schatz did what he failed to do at Cedar Lake. He moved his line to the high side of turns one and two, stopping any large run by Haudenschild around the top. Doing so also gave him a good enough run off the corner to extend his lead over Haudenschild.

“Trying to figure out how to pass here is big,” Haudenschild said. “I followed Donny around there for a lot of laps. He don’t make any mistakes. He’s difficult to get around.”

Haudenschild attempted a slide job into turn one to close back on Schatz, but it back fired. He slid up the track and lost grip off the corner, allowing Schatz to further pull away and cruise to the win.

“I had to move around the race track,” Schatz said. “There were laps where I felt like I could roll the bottom and the middle better, and laps where I felt like I had to hustle the top.

"Sheldon is really good when it comes to the cushion like that. It’s tricky. And he’s only getting better. The bad part is he’s way young. There’s going to come a time when he’s going to make me obsolete. But not today.”

Behind Schatz, Haudenschild finished second with Sweet third, Daryn Pittman fourth and David Gravel fifth – shutting out the PA Posse from the top-five at the Mechanicsburg, Pa. track.

With Sweet finishing third, Schatz also closed the points gap between them to eight points.

The Summer Nationals win was Schatz’s seventh Series victory of the year and 290th career win overall.

Victory Lane at Williams Grove Speedway was no longer a distant vision. He saw the confetti and saw the trophy being handed to him once again.

“It’s been a long time since standing here (in Victory Lane at Williams Grove Speedway), but I remember what it feels like now,” Schatz said.

Griffith holds off Haudenschild for Attica AFCS win; Miller edges Gun for AFCS 305 victory; Irey takes late model checkers

By Brian Liskai
ATTICA, OH. - A couple of years ago Caleb Griffith thought he was done racing. But, a family friend purchased a sprint car and made the call to Griffith, who, reluctantly, decided to give it another go. It paid off as the Sandusky, Ohio driver led all 30 laps of the 410 sprint feature Friday, July 26 at Attica Raceway Park on Morgan Stanley/Underground Utilities Inc. Night.

Griffith, Attica's 2014 track champion, had to hold off a late race charge by hall-of-famer Jac Haudenschild to earn his third career victory at Attica in the Callie's Performance Performance Products 410 sprints. The victory was worth $4,000 thanks to Spanky's Pizza of Carey, Ohio.
"I've been poached here on late race restarts so many times. I'm thinking on that last restart...I look at the board and saw Jac had gotten back to second and I'm thinking if I can get rolling...he'll have a shot in the first corner but after that I'll be okay. I bumped the wing back for this end (turns one and two) and I caught the curb down here (turns three and four) and the second lap I saw him under me. I was thinking should I move..I didn't know what to do. I pulled one from the Vic (crew chief) rule book and kept bombing the top," said Griffith beside his Jeff Ward Demolition backed machine.

"I have to thank Jeff (Ward, car owner) the most. My whole family, all the sacrifices they've made. My brother-in-law Dusty and Vic...Brady helped me put all this together at the beginning of the year and get going. For awhile there on the other race car...you start to doubt everything you felt like you ever knew. You don't know if you still know how to do this. We changed cars for tonight...didn't change a torsion bar or shock and all night that thing has been awesome," added Griffith.

And, with just three All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads/Kistler Racing Products Attica Fremont Championship Series (AFCS) Presented by the Baumann Auto Group 410 sprint races left to determine the $10,000 champion, the points tightened up. Buddy Kofoid came into the night atop the standings with Cap Henry second. Henry finished third at Attica while Kofoid came home fourth as the series heads to Fremont Speedway Saturday, July 27.

Mansfield, Ohio's Matt Irey also held off a late race charge in the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Models to score his first win of the season at Attica. Ryan Missler and Doug Drown hounded Irey - Attica's 2016 track champion - the entire 25 laps but Irey held on for his third career feature win at the track.

"I saw Ryan and got to thinking maybe the top was getting a little dirty with all the lapped cars and I was starting to get a little more free and I saw him and I figured if I cleared him off the corner I have to take his line. I moved down and the car got pretty good and that was the last I saw him. It's been too long..been a rough year. We bent our main car two weeks ago at Wayne County so we pulled the back-up car out...that's twice we've done that here," said Irey beside his his Rod Eddleblute's Garage/Flenner Well & Excavating/Mid-Ohio Graphics/Tru-Form/Kilgore & Harring CPA backed #36.

The Fremont Fence 305 Sprint feature literally came down to the blink of an eye. Fremont, Ohio's Jamie Miller held off Tyler Gunn for his third straight Attica win by a difference of .081 seconds. Miller, Attica's 2005 track champion, has won five overall features in 2019 (two at Fremont) and pads his lead in the KS Sales & Service AFCS Presented by Jason Dietsch Trailer Sales heading into Fremont on Saturday, July 27. The win is the 22nd in the 305 division for Miller at Attica and places him fourth on the all-time victory list.

"I tried to use all the track and then some. That last lap was...this thing was getting so tight there at the end, it didn't want to turn. Once I got screwed up I could hear him back there and I knew he was going to try and slide me so I just left off and turned and drove right back by him. It's pretty awesome to be fourth on the all-time list. I never really thought I'd be up there when I started racing in 1999. I have a ways to go to catch Paul (Weaver)," said Miller beside his Fostoria Mod Shop/Crown Battery/Sonic Hauling/Pen Monster.com/Brad’s Barbecue/Napa of Attica/Avon by Angie/Griff’s Engines/Color Street by Jaime Hennig/Reedtown Tavern/York Carpet Outlet/Branham Builders/Imprint Logo backed #26.

Haudenschild and Griffith brought the field to green for the 30-lap 410 feature with Griffith shooting into the lead over Haudenschild, Henry, TJ Michael, Stuart Brubaker, Kofoid and Jess Stiger. Henry took over the second spot on lap three right before the caution flew for Brian Lay who stopped on the speedway. When the green returned Griffith pulled away from Henry and his lead was nearly two seconds by lap nine.

Heavy lapped traffic came into play by lap 13 and Griffith lead began to shrink as Henry closed with Haudenschild, Michael, Kofoid, Brubaker, Travis Philo and Hunter Schuerenberg in tow. With 16 laps in Paige Polyak coasted to a stop giving Griffith a clear track. On the ensuing restart Griffith pulled away slightly but Haudenschild got up on the wheel and drove back into second. A tremendous battle was taking place for fourth involving Michael, Kofoid, Brubaker and Philo.
Schuerenberg took a nasty tumble on lap 21 but was uninjured. On the restart Haudenschild made a bid for the led, trying a slider on Griffith in turns one and two. Griffith was able to turn back under and maintain the lead and began to steadily pull away over the next hand full of laps. The battle for third was heating up between Henry and Kofoid as they closed on the leaders.

With two laps to go Haudenschild closed the gap on Griffith significantly and took a couple of looks under the leader. Griffith hit his marks perfectly and drove to the win over Haudenschild, Henry, Kofoid and Philo.

Ryan Markham and Irey paced the field for the 25 lap late model A-main with Irey gaining the advantage over Markham, Missler, Jeff Warnick, Nate Potts and Doug Drown. After a lap was scored, Markham slowed down the back stretch and Jim Gingery got into him bringing out the caution with Markham going to the pits. On the restart Irey pulled away from Missler as Warnick battled with Drown for third.

The second and final caution of the race fell on lap four for Jimmie Ward. When the green flew so did Irey, building up a pretty good lead over Missler, Drown, Warnick, Devin Shiels and Potts. But, lapped traffic came into play with 10 laps to go and Missler and Drown closed quickly on Irey. The trio ran under a blanket the next hand five laps. With just five laps to go Missler stuck the nose of his machine under Irey to challenge, But Irey moved down a lane and blocked the advance and drove to the win over Missler, Drown, Shiels and Mike Bores.

Zeth Sabo and Miller led the 305 A-main to green with Miller taking the lead over Sabo, Kyle Capodice, Luke Griffith, Jason Keckler, Tyler Street, John Ivy and Gunn. Miller immediately pulled away to a commanding leader while Sabo held his own in second. Miller's big lead evaporated when Kevin Mingus spun on lap nine.

When racing resumed Miller again pulled away and in four laps had a two second advantage over Sabo while Gunn had worked his way to third. As the leaders raced into lapped traffic with 10 circuits remaining Sabo and Gunn battled hard for the runner-up spot with Gunn taking it as the caution flew for a Seth Schneider spin. On the ensuing restart Sabo was able to get under Gunn to retake second but Gunn returned the favor a lap later. Once taking command of second Gunn set his sights on Miller and methodically chipped away at his lead.

With three laps to go Gunn was on Miller's rear bumper. Miller slipped off the high side of turn two on lap 23 but was able to maintain the lead. Miller and Gunn raced side by side out of two after taking the white flag. Through three and four they were side by side and it was a drag race to the checkers with Miller winning by a bumper over Gunn. Capodice, Sabo and Bobby Clark rounded out the top five.

There is no racing the next two weeks at Attica Raceway Park as the Attica Independent Fair takes over. Attica gets back to action on Friday, Aug. 16 on Columbus Equipment/Central Ohio Farmers Night. It is the final AFCS point night at Attica for the 410 and 305 sprints with the late models in action for the Attica/Oakshade Raceway Challenge Series. Also, the 305 sprints will battle for $1,000 to win presented by Griff's Engines.

McFadden goes back-to-back to score $10,000 at Jackson Motorplex

JACKSON, Minn. (July 27, 2019) - For the second time in as many days, and for the fourth time in his career, Brisbane, Australia’s James McFadden is an Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 main event winner, this time using a late-race surge to power under race leader, Josh Baughman, during the closing laps of Friday’s visit to Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minnesota.

Starting fourth on the feature grid, McFadden’s drive to the front was not only impressive, but also valuable, scoring $10,000 for his feature triumph in southern Minnesota, bumping his two-day total with Tony Stewart’s All Stars to $15,000. Adding some extra hype to his Friday night feat, MAVTV Motorsports Network, the official television home of the All Star Circuit of Champions in 2019, was on hand to capture all of the action, set to re-air later this fall via tape-delay broadcast.

“This feels great. The car has been working really well,” James McFadden expressed, driver of the Kasey Kahne Racing with Mike Curb/Curb Records/Team ASE/Wicked Energy Gum/Wicked Cushion/No. 9 sprint car. “I was actually starting to get frustrated a little bit. I felt like I was really good in traffic. The cautions kinda screwed up any chance we had to make up some ground in traffic."

Although McFadden was the star of the show during the final five circuits, it was Grain Valley, Missouri’s Brian Brown who earned the initial jump, utilizing the pole position to scoot away to a comfortable lead during the first 12 circuits. Visalia, California’s Cory Eliason chased Brown from the runner-up spot, followed by Josh Baughman, James McFadden, and Aaron Reutzel.

Near-flawless at the front of the field, and only tripped up by slower traffic on one occasion, Brian Brown was seemingly in complete control, that until caution flags waved for a slowing Aaron Reutzel with 12 laps recorded.

Unfortunately, while slowing for the caution, Brown bumped the inside berm causing the multi-time Knoxville Raceway feature winner to lose the handle of his familiar no. 21 and spin to the stop. That mishap ultimately forced Brown to surrender the top spot to Josh Baughman; Aaron Reutzel’s car owner and teammate who had already slipped into second by lap six.

When green flag action returned, it was Baughman who was now the man in charge, now followed by James McFadden, Cory Eliason, Justin Henderson, and Brock Zearfoss. Baughman remained in control for 13 circuits, working as hard as he could to keep McFadden and Eliason off of his shoulders.

By lap 25, McFadden was all over Baughman for the lead, knocking down the advantage to less than a car length by the time the frontrunners received the five-to-go signal from the flagstand.

Although McFadden’s first bid for the top spot did not succeed in turns one and two, his efforts in the next two corners prevailed, jamming the Kasey Kahne Racing entry between Baughman and the inside berm as the pair raced into turn three on lap 26. The move sealed the deal, allowing McFadden to drive on to score the $10,000 payday. Eliason powered ahead to finish second, followed by Josh Baughman, a hard-charging Kerry Madsen from 18th, and Justin Henderson.

"I'm proud of this team," McFadden added. "It has been a great few days."

A pair of starts in the Hawkeye State will conclude the four-day, All Star jaunt through the Midwest including a visit to the famed Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, on Saturday, July 27, followed by a stop at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, on Sunday, July 28. Saving the biggest event for last, of course, Sunday’s visit to 34 Raceway will feature the highly-anticipated Inaugural Rayce Rudeen Foundation Race awarding a grand prize equalling $26,000.

Those seeking additional news and notes pertaining to the events at Knoxville Raceway and 34 Raceway should visit each facility at their respective online homes: www.knoxvilleraceway.com and www.34raceway.com.

NEW GROOVE: Tim Shaffer wins at Williams Grove Speedway Pennsylvania-native Shaffer holds off late race attack by David Gravel to claim second World of Outlaws win this year

Crew members from the Roth Motorsports team jumped into Tim Shaffer’s trailer and scurried to the sweat drenched driver.
With his arms out and a smile just as wide, Shaffer embraced the two crew members and thanked them for helping him get back on track.

The Aliquippa, Pa.-native had just left Victory Lane at Williams Grove Speedway for the second time in his World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series career – first time since 2001. The win was also his second Series victory of the year – the first was at Las Vegas in February.

“They’re hard to get,” Shaffer said about winning in general. “This place is really special. I hadn’t realized how long it had been since I won here. It goes back to a great car, great engine, great team. It’s funny, we struggled this year. We started good, struggled mid-season and it seems like we’re coming back to life.”

What the Roth Motorsports crew did to help Shaffer had nothing to do with car set up, the engine or tires. They simply helped him have fun again.

“Basically, they’ve been hanging out at my house and having fun,” Shaffer said. “Running go-karts and just having fun again. It’s neat to have friends like that. They enjoy racing and love it as much as you do and get to have fun with other things instead of being around racing all of the time, and we had a blast.

“You kind of loosen up. We came here already in a good mood, having fun, and it’s carrying on.”

That showed in Shaffer’s performance throughout the night. He finished second to Brad Sweet in his Drydene Heat race but tested Sweet for the lead in the early stage of the eight-lap race. Shaffer then went on the win the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash from the pole and the Feature, leading all 25 laps.

However, Watertown, Conn.-native David Gravel – who was coming off a win at Lernerville Speedway and eight top-five finishes in a row, with seven of them being podium finishes – did not let Shaffer cruise to the victory.

In the early stage of the Feature, Shaffer powered around the high side of the track with a blistering pace that left about a straightaway distance between he and second-place Freddie Rahmer. His pace also put him in lap traffic by Lap five on the half-mile speedway.

Rahmer held on to second-place for the first 11 laps before 10-time Series champion Donny Schatz dove underneath the PA Posse member in turn three and powered by him off turn four. The next corner, Gravel charged around the outside of Rahmer and stole third-place.

Gravel worked on Schatz’s bumper for the next few laps until the caution came out for Daryn Pittman having a flat right front tire.

The group of 25 cars lined back up two-by-two for the restart. Shaffer crept the field around turns three and four before mashing the throttle and launching back to the lead down the front stretch. Behind him Schatz and Gravel raced side-by-side through turns one and two – Gravel low, Schatz high. The high side had been the fastest way around all night, but Gravel made the bottom work and darted to second off the corner.

The track widened as the race progressed. Shaffer stayed high, testing the limits of the cushion. Gravel, however, was perfecting the bottom line. The Jason Johnson Racing No. 41 car worked its way to within striking distance of Shaffer and waited for an opportunity to pounce.

There were no mistakes, though. Shaffer was smooth around the top and aggressive with laps cars. If there was an opening, he threw his Rudzik Excavating No. 49x into the gap without hesitation. There was no time to be cautious. Gravel was coming, and he knew it.

“I seen the board that the 41 got by [Schatz] on that yellow,” Shaffer said. “I said ‘Oh, he’s hunting me down.’ I was just trying to make good laps and I knew we’d be hard to beat.”

With Shaffer not making any mistakes, Gravel knew he had to do something drastic if he wanted another Williams Grove victory.

Coming to the white flag, Gravel rocketed his car underneath Shaffer into turn three – closing about a four-car length gap. The momentum slid his car up the track and he went side-by-side with Shaffer, about a foot a part, through turn four. Shaffer held his line – and his eyes closed, he said jokingly. That hindered Gravel’s charge and forced him to fall in line behind the orange and black No. 49x.

“I was close, I didn’t see him there for a second,” Gravel said. “I obviously just gave him a little bit of room to get back by me. If it was twenty or fifty grand (to win) I probably would have slid up here. But it was a good night. We were fast all night long. I feel like we were the only car to run on the bottom of the race track.”

Shaffer pulled away with the lead and the $8,000 win at the opening night of the Champion Racing Oil Summer Nationals doubleheader – his 27th career Series victory.

With Schatz – second in points – finishing third and Series points leader Brad Sweet finishing seventh, Gravel bested the top two in points for the second straight night and continues to inch his way into the championship battle. He is now 102 points behind Sweet and 88 points behind Schatz.

The reigning champion has also closed the gap to Sweet, now 14 points behind him.

Shaffer isn’t running for points. He’s racing to have fun. He’ll have even more fun if he can get back-to-back wins at Williams Grove Speedway and collect Saturday’s $20,000 winnings. But for now, with the support of fellow racers and friends, he’s just relishing in what he does.

“It’s just about enjoying it,” Shaffer said. “I’ve been doing this for 36 years. That’s why I don’t run a grueling schedule. I run my own grueling schedule. If I want to take a weekend off and go boating, I’m going to do it. But this is what I’ve done my whole life and I’m really enjoying it.”
