Port Royal Speedway Off This Week, Returns Next Week With Living Legends Dream Race

By- Justin Snyder

PORT ROYAL, Pa- Port Royal Speedway will be off this weekend, but will return next week with the annual Living Legends Dream Race.

The Weikert’s Livestock 410 Sprint Cars and the River Valley Builder’s Super Late Models will compete with a grand total $70,000 purse available between the two-divisions and many contingency sponsor prizes as well.

This year’s honorees will be Joe Gravino on the Sprint Car side and Ken Dickson on the Late Model side.

Gravino is most known by speedway regulars for his yellow Polaris sponsored #28 and has 10 career victories at the Juniata County oval, including an opening day win at the speedway in 1989.

Dickson has 54 career victories at the speedway, second only to Scotty Haus. Dickson’s son Nick Dickson is a frequent competitor in the Super Model division at the speedway and picked up a win earlier in the season.

The first ever Dream Race was held in 2007, where Sean Michael triumphed in a very popular and emotional win driving for the late Jim Nace in his #6 Sprint Car. Since then, Greg Hodnett (2), Cody Darrah, Chad Layton, Blane Heimbach, Ryan Taylor, Brent Marks, Rick Lafferty and most recently Lance Dewease have won the annual event. The win last year was Dewease’s second in the race.

For the 410 Sprint Cars there will be an entire purse totaling over $57,000 with the 30-lap feature winner guaranteed $10,000 and the track paying $500 to start. The main event will pay over $35,000 throughout the field.

As traditional there will also be twin 16-lap semi mains carrying full purses as well that will help set the field for the A-Main. Winners will earn $2,000 for their efforts, $200 to start and nearly $10,000 making up the purse for each Semi.

Time trials will set the semi lineups with an inversion draw. Odd and even qualifiers will split into the semi-mains with the top 10 from each semi advancing to the A-Main. The top 3 from each semi will go into inversion draw as well.

There will also be a fast time award for each semi, hard charger awards in both semi’s, along with three $200 bonuses in the A-Main’s selected from the 11th-25th place finishers. Fans will have a chance to play a part in the night as well as they will be voting for the 25th place starter in the A-Main. To be eligible for the fan vote, drivers must finish the B-Main and be a non-qualifier.

Thousands of dollars in contingency prizes and cash will also be handed out throughout the night. We will a have a complete list close to race day.

The late models will be racing for $2500 to the winner with a 25-lap feature featuring a purse of close to $12,500. A-Main qualifiers will be guaranteed $250 to take the green along with $100 in tow money.
