STEVE OWINGS KEEPS MOMENTUM GOING WITH FRIDAY NIGHT VICTORY AT TRAIL-WAY

HANOVER, Pa. (9/6/19) – Last Friday, Steve Owings left the speedway on a tow truck after flipping into the catch fence in Turns Three and Four. One week later, Owings stood in victory lane, after earning his fifth 358 Sprint Car win of the 2019 season at Trail-Way Speedway.

“This will pay for the catch fence deal, I can assure you of that,” Owings said upon exiting his Valentine Motorsports/Baughers Orchard Sprint Car.

Owings, of Westminster, Maryland, started on the pole and dominated the 25-lap feature from start to finish.

“Starting on the pole, you get worried. I’d rather chase the field than get out there by myself.

Continued Owings, “The track was dusty tonight. It wasn’t anything like it was last week, but we just had to be patient, and the lap cars did a nice job.”

Owings’ lone challenge of the night came when he attempted to pass the first pack of cars at the tail end of the lead lap. Rookie 358 Sprint Car driver, Kyle Rohrbaugh and Andrew Hake were engaged in a battle for the last spot with Owings rapidly closing in.

For several laps, Owings tried to sneak under Hake to put him a lap down, but with second-running Mike Bittinger closing to within a .707-second lead, Owings finally found his opportunity when Hake slid up coming out of Turn Two. Owings darted under Hake, completing the pass down the backstretch and increasing his lead over Bittinger to 1.272 seconds.

“We started catching the back cars, and they were doing a good pace. They were racing each other, so you can’t really knock them for not pulling over for me, because they are racing for position, too. They did a nice job. They kept their line.”

Bittinger’s runner-up spot wasn’t a lock as seventh-starting David Holbrook made his presence known with a handful of laps remaining. Holbrook gained momentum through Turns One and Two, jetting to the outside of Bittinger and completing the pass down the backstretch on the 23rd lap. The runner-up finish earned Holbrook the Big Mike’s Crabhouse Hard Charger award.

“I had to work my ass off to get where we’re at,” Holbrook said. “When you’re the only car at the top, you have to keep it clean. It’s kind of hard to see coming off of the corners, but you just hope for the best and aim it.”

Continued Holbrook, “A lot of these guys like to run the top, but tonight they were on the bottom, and I thought, “ ‘That’s good! I’ll save it for myself!’ ”

Owings cruised over the final two circuits en route to his 25th career 358 Sprint Car victory at Trail-Way.

Bittinger held on to finish third, followed by Dan Richcreek and Tim McClelland completing the top five.

Trail-Way’s winningest 358 Sprint Car driver, Brad McClelland, made a surprise return to the Hanover 1/3-mile oval after Todd Rittenhouse and crew left the speedway due to a medical emergency. It was McClelland’s first time behind the wheel since retiring at the end of the 2015 season.

Due to the driver change, McClelland started at the rear of the field and raced his way to a tenth place finish.

358 Sprint Car heat winners were Dylan Norris and Owings.

Jesse Snyder held a 20-point lead going into Friday’s 600 Micro Sprint feature. With second-place Jim Young starting on the pole and Snyder starting fourth, all Snyder had to do was hold on for 20 laps to claim his first 600 Micro Sprint track championship at Trail-Way Speedway.

Snyder did just that.

Young dominated the race, while Snyder stayed conservative in third behind Bradley Weber, never forcing the issue in attempts for a runner-up finish.

Young’s win was his fourth of the season.

Snyder’s third place finish secured the 2019 600 Micro Sprint track championship. He was followed by Jayden Wolf and Daniel Bair.

600 Micro Sprint heat winners were Hannah Riser and Young.

Wrightsville’s Bill Diehl dominated the Pizza Shop of Etters Central PA Legends presented by Harvest Chapel’s Dale Hahn Memorial.

Diehl’s win was his fourth of the 2019 season and second at Trail-Way.

Chris McKinney, Alex Schmiedel, Travis McClelland and Scott Houdeshell completed the top five.

Travis Perry earned his first victory of 2019 with a win in the rain-postponed Armin Hostetter Memorial.

Perry took the lead from pole-sitter Seth Kearchner on the third lap and never looked back.

Following Perry across the line was Houdeshell, McKinney, Austin Bellemare and Travis McClelland.

Robbie Carroll claimed his 7th Limited Stock victory of 2019. Carroll passed polesitter, Justin Oberlin, on the fourth lap and dominated the remaining laps en route to his 25th career win.

Matt Worley, Oberlin, Cody Klinedinst and Jeff Foster completed the top five.

Klinedinst, Chad Weaver and Worley were heat race winners.
