TIM MCCLELLAND CAPS ROOKIE SEASON WITH 1ST CAREER 358 SPRINT CAR VICTORY AT TRAIL-WAY SPEEDWAY

Bill McIntyre Photo
Hanover, Pa. (9/13/19): By all accounts, Tim McClelland had a solid rookie 358 Sprint Car season at Trail-Way Speedway.

Coming into the final 358 Sprint Car event of 2019, McClelland sat in the top ten in points with a handful of top-fives and eight top-tens in ten events. With Rookie of the Year honors secured, all McClelland wanted was the win.

He did just that Friday night at Trail-Way Speedway.

McClelland started on the pole for the 25-lap Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic feature and took off on the start, pulling away to a sizeable lead over East Berlin’s Cody Fletcher.

“Starting up front, that’s the main thing,” McClelland said in victory lane, “It was my race to lose. Me as a rookie? I’m running scared the whole way.

McClelland continued, “Funny thing is, my old man isn’t even here tonight. It’s just me, my wife, kids, my mom, my best buddy and the motor owner. I guarantee you my old man is mad right now because he wasn’t here to witness it.”

McClelland approached lap cars by the seventh lap and wasted no time putting space between himself and Fletcher. With each car lapped, Fletcher weaved through the same cars, never allowing more than two cars to extend the distance between the front two.

For the second week in a row, the 358 Sprint Car feature went nonstop, which allowed McClelland to keep a comfortable distance over the final laps of the race.

With three laps to go and a pack of lapped cars in his sight, McClelland continued to hit his marks, although Fletcher was able to cut into his lead by over a second at the line.

Following McClelland and Fletcher across the line was Hanover’s Dylan Norris.

Steve Owings started last and finished fourth, securing the 2019 358 Sprint Car track championship. While Owings was excited for his team’s accomplishments, he was ready to take in McClelland’s first victory lane experience.

“Awesome job, Timmy McClelland,” Owings said, “Oh my god, it is so cool to see him win here tonight! I guarantee you he’s smiling from ear-to-ear! What an awesome year he’s had, and what a hell of a way to cap it off.

Continued Owings on his 2019 season, “It wasn’t too bad for a 52-year-old guy. Maybe next year we’ll get a little better, like wine!”

Rounding out the top five was David Holbrook.

Sixth through tenth went to Joe Trone Jr., Mark Van Vorst, Kyle Rohrbaugh, Andrew Hake and Nat Tuckey.

Norris and Owings were credited with heat race wins.

Harrisburg’s Brian Marriott clamed the 20-lap 270 Micro Sprint feature win and the 2019 270 Micro Sprint track championship Friday night at Trail-Way Speedway.

Marriott and Cory Myers raced side-by-side until the caution came out for Joe Long Jr., who held the point lead coming into the night’s event. Long was forced to exit the track when his car ran out of coolant.

While pacing the field, Myers stopped on the frontstretch when his chain fell off.

On the next restart, Marriott jumped to a quick lead and raced on to claim his second win of 2019.

Twelfth starting Billy Logeman finished in the runner-up spot, followed by Cameron Smith, Zachary Glass and Luis Gonzalez Jr. rounding out the top five.

Myers and Logeman were heat race winners.

Ryan Smith completed a seventh-lap pass for the lead on Dalton Myers at the line to win his second Street Stock race of 2019.

Danny Beard finished second, followed by the 2019 Street Stock track champion Sam Gallagher in third. Myers and Aaron Beard completed the top five.

Gallagher and Danny Beard were heat race winners.

Jason Chronister, brother Matt Chronister and Justin Oberlin put on a show for the fans in the 15-lap Limited Stock feature.

Outside polesitter, Matt Chronister, held the lead for the first nine laps before yielding the top spot to Justin Oberlin. Matt’s brother Jason quickly followed Oberlin, immediately applying pressure for the lead. Matt Chronister would not back down, with Jason bolting to the inside of Oberlin and Matt squeezed to the outside of Oberlin, creating a Chronister sandwich.

Jason completed the pass for the lead with one lap to go and held on to claim his first win of the 2019 season.

Matt Chronister followed Jason across the line for second, followed by Oberlin in third. Cody Klinedinst finished fourth with Nick McDaniel in fifth.

Oberlin and Robbie Carroll were heat race winners.

Carroll’s 11th place finish and season-high seven wins secured his second consecutive Limited Stock track championship.
