Williamson Logs Laps and Gains Experience in First Trip to Knoxville Raceway

Inside Line Promotions - KNOXVILLE, Iowa (June 23, 2020) - Pulling into Knoxville Raceway for the first time can be intimidating for any competitor.

Imagine being a 20-year-old driver in his first year of racing 360ci winged sprint cars like Garet Williamson. The task of trying to compete at a high level while gaining experience just got tougher.

Williamson didn't get overwhelmed last Saturday. Instead, he completed each event against a stout field and left sprint car racing hallowed ground with a respectable 14th-place finish.

"It was awesome and there is nothing really like it," Williamson said of running at Knoxville Raceway. "Obviously, we always want to get in the top 10 or top five, but for our first time there and starting deep, we did all right.

"We learned a ton. Our main reason we wanted to go there was to learn as much as we can before the Nationals to see what we needed to be better and go from there."

Driving the Bryant Paver Motorsports machine, Williamson qualified 21 st in the 33-car field. That put him on the pole for the first heat race.

It didn't take long for the Columbia, Mo., driver to adjust to conditions. Williamson was able to hold off Knoxville Raceway regular Matt Moro to take the heat race win. That locked Williamson into the 14th starting spot on the feature grid. He maintained his position and completed every lap to gain valuable track time.

"It's such a momentum deal," he said. "You talk to other drivers and take in as much as you can about what to do and what not to do. You try to be as smooth as you can and try not to make mistakes.

"Our next race there will be during the Nationals. I wish we could get back there sooner, but I'm pumped to go back."

Williamson is also excited for the upcoming week. After a little more than three months of sitting idle, the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour will be back in action with races at Caney Valley Speedway in Caney, Kan., on Thursday and at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark., on Saturday.

"We haven't been able to run since we ran out west, so we are itching to get out there with the national guys," Williamson said. "We got a bunch of momentum around here going into it and we need to get back in the top 10 in points.

"It's mostly California guys in the top 20 so we need the races, especially before we go back out to Washington. We need to get up in the points and see what we can do."
