Inside Line Promotions - PEVELY, Mo. (Aug. 12, 2020) - The famed Knoxville Nationals usually marks a midpoint and often times the highest point to each sprint car season.
However, this year is different. The marquee World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series event at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, has been replaced by The One and Only and the 9th annual Brownells Capitani Classic presented by Great Southern Bank this Thursday through Saturday.
While it still might represent the middle of the season, no one quite knows what the future holds as the 2020 campaign has been a wild one.
Mason Daniel is a contender for the World of Outlaws Rookie of the Year Award as two drivers are vying for the prestigious honor. Daniel enters the event at Knoxville Raceway this weekend with a 10-point lead in the Rookie of the Year chase.
"We've had some good runs and then some not so great runs this year," he said. "For me, it's been my first time at a lot of these tracks. I'm still learning a bunch. I feel like when we get back to some tracks where we have some laps we will produce better results."
Knoxville Raceway presents that opportunity this weekend. Daniel has visited the half-mile oval multiple times in the last couple of seasons. However, this weekend he will duke it out among a field of approximately 70 elite drivers.
"With the different format I think you take a step back and look at it like it's another three-day race weekend with the World of Outlaws because we're racing every night unlike the traditional Knoxville Nationals format," he said. "You have to be on your game every single night. We tested there last month and ran some good lap times. It'll be interesting to see how we stack up against this great field."
