MELEASON HOLDS OFF HERR FOR 2ND SUPER SPORTSMAN WIN OF 2020

YORK HAVEN, Pa.: Chris Meleason was just trying to get as many spots as possible during the Super Sportsman main event Saturday night.

It was going to be difficult to win. Tony Jackson had the field covered, and it didn’t seem like anyone had anything for the leader over the race distance.

But, you have to finish to make it to Victory Lane. Jackson had problems in the closing stages of the event, and Meleason took over the lead and held off Frankie Herr to score the win in the 25-lap Super Sportsman feature at BAPS Motor Speedway.

“In racing, you never know what is going to happen, so you always dig as much as you can,” Meleason said after his second win of the 2020 season. “You get as many positions as you can, and like tonight, Tony ended up having problems.

“I don’t know what happened to him, but I saw him in the fence, there. It’s one of those deals, and you’ve got to be on it all the time.”

After a pair of cautions on the initial start, Jackson was on it from the drop of the green flag. He started on the pole and pulled out to a huge lead over the first 10 laps.

Jackson mowed down backmarkers and was on cruise control. He opened up a gaudy 8.813-second advantage over the field and looked like a slam-dunk winner.

Things changed on Lap 20. Jackson rolled to a stop with a part failure. Meleason, who took second from Ryan Rutz on the 15th circuit, found himself out front with a chance to win his fourth career event at the speedway.

“It was a completely different from the track we are used to,” Meleason said. “It was definitely slick out there, and there was surprisingly more grip on the top than what I was expecting. We haven’t really been up there this year, but it’s where I like to be.

“It’s definitely been fast. The past couple of weeks, these guys have it running great. We had some mechanical issues during the Dirty 30 — we broke a plug — but I felt like the car was there for that, too.”

It was there when it mattered on this night. And Meleason needed it with Frankie Herr taking second on Lap 19 and getting a clear shot on the restart.

Herr got the jump, but he couldn’t make it stick. Meleason was too much down the stretch and stayed out front to take the victory by 1.45 seconds at the stripe.

“We had that restart, and Frankie got me a little bit,” Meleason said. “The first one they called it back for a jump. I ran him a little heavy going into the next one, because he jumped the next one again, and I definitely wasn’t going to lose that race.”

Herr, who came from 14th, finished second. Kenny Edkin, Scott Dellinger, and 17th-place starter Mike Enders completed the top five.

Donnie Farlling started on the pole and ran away to the victory in the Creekside Auto Sales Late Model main event.

There were two cautions over the 20-lap distance, but that didn’t stop Farlling from pacing the field and taking the win over second-place starter Troy Miller.

Ben Whitaker, ninth-place starting Alan Sagi, and Chase Billet completed the top five. There were 25 cars competing in the main event.

In the regularly scheduled Frankie’s Used Auto Parts/Mike’s Towing Street Stock main event, Bud Witmer captured his first event at BAPS Motor Speedway since 2009.

Niklas Stoudt led the first two circuits before Jasen Geesaman took over and led through Lap 15. Witmer and Sam Rial used a restart to dispose of Geesaman, and the chase was on for the win.

Witmer proved to be too much over the final five circuits and took the win. Rial, Geesaman, Eric Tripp, and Stan Wanner completed the top five.

The Street Stock division also ran a make-up main event from September 26. Mike Walls led all 20 laps to take the win over Geesaman, Rial, Jim Palm, and Kyle Saylor.

Scott Houdeshell stormed to the front and took the victory in the 20-lap Gene Latta Ford Central Pa. Legends feature.

Houdeshell started ninth on the grid and made his way to the front in a hurry. Bill Diehl led the first three circuits, with Chris Transeau leading laps four through seven before giving way to Houdeshell.

Once out front, Houdeshell led the final 13 laps and took the win. Travis McClelland, Greg Burd, Richie Dobson, and Diehl completed the top five.

The Mid-Atlantic Modifieds were on the card for a pair of 20-lap main events. Tim Fedder captured the make-up August 1 event, with Justin Cullum wiring the field in Saturday’s feature.
