Wilson Wraps Up All Star Season With Fifth-Place Finish at Fremont Speedway

Inside Line Promotions - FREMONT, Ohio (Oct. 12, 2020) - Greg Wilson earned a much-needed top-five result last Saturday during the season finale for the Ollie's Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1.

Wilson's fifth-place showing during the Jim Ford Classic at Fremont Speedway tied a bow on the All Star season, but more importantly it provided reassurance that Wilson and his Hercules Tires, Ohio Logistics, DNC Hydraulics and Gear Off Road sponsored team are heading in the right direction.

"With running as poorly as we've ran lately and listening to everyone else and getting worse, we changed things to what we felt like was better and then to race better was a huge, huge confidence builder," said Wilson, who finished the season sixth in the championship standings. "It was a bit of a reality check at the same time."

Wilson opened the two-day show on Friday by qualifying 14th quickest overall and second best in his group. He then placed fourth in a heat race to lock into the 17th starting position in the main event.

"We've struggled so bad qualifying the last two months that we've been on the last row of our heat race no matter where we've been," he said. "So to go out and qualify decent and make the inversion of our heat race impressed myself a little bit. To make it through the heat race was good. It put us pretty far back in the feature.

"I had left the shop with a game plan. The track wasn't what I thought it'd be. I almost reverted back to what I used to do. I stopped myself and said follow the game plan no matter what. I did that up until we got to feature-time. Because the way the track looked I thought we'd go the other way. We had a good race. I think me and (Christopher) Bell passed each other 15 times like we were racing for the lead."

Wilson ended up with a 14th-place result.

"I went to bed that night and was thinking my plan was better than my thoughts were as far as adjustments," he said. "My plan for Saturday was to go a little farther than we were when we started Friday and then I wasn't touching the setup all night long."

Wilson qualified 14th quickest overall and quickest in his group on Saturday. He advanced from fourth to third place in a heat race and from fifth to fourth place in a dash before closing the night by maneuvering from seventh to fifth place in the A Main.

"We went out toward the tail end and we were the fastest in our group during qualifying," he said. "We transferred out of the heat race and passed a couple of cars in the dash before we lost one at the end. We didn't vary from the game plan. We were one or two adjustments from being at least a second-place car in the feature. There is a completely different attitude at the W20 shop this week.

"I've raced long enough to know you have to be careful until you can back it up. Especially when you go to a place like Fremont where we've been good. Until we race somewhere else and have a decent night doing the same thing we did at Fremont, that will be when I really feel good about it. That being said, we were at Fremont a week or two ago and missed a local show by a lot. When you do all that work in your own shop it's a huge confidence booster going into the fall and the winter to trust yourself and to know I shouldn't be dragging my feet second guessing if I feel we need to change something."
