HERR & DEVINE ACHIEVE FIRST TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP WITH HARVEST CLASSIC WIN

YORK HAVEN, PA - Frankie Herr had plenty of motivation to win races over the last three weeks at BAPS Motor Speedway.

September started with a disappointing run in the Sportsman 100. Herr made a driving error during the prestigious event and wanted to make up for the loss, but that wasn’t his only inspiration.

Herr’s car-owner, Bill Devine, had never won a championship in 34 years of owning a race car. With the season winding down, the Carlisle, Pa., driver had a chance to rectify that problem.

That journey was completed Saturday night. Herr blasted to his third straight win at the speedway in the 25-Lap Harvest Classic. The victory was the fifth of the season for the 58-year-old driver and clinched the Super Sportsman championship.

“It just meant so much for me to win it for Bill and the team,” Herr said. “He’s been racing a long time and never won a championship, and I knew that.

“When he hired me years ago, it took a while to get me to do it again full time. The last three years, we went full time at it and when I saw we had a chance to do something at the end of the year, I really wanted to get it for him.”

Continued Herr, “It’s a nerve-racking deal. Anything can happen in racing. It’s not over until it’s over, and it was special when it was finally over.”

Nate Young grabbed the early lead from his outside front row starting spot, only to give it up to Chase Gutshall on Lap 3. The lead was short-lived, as seventh-place starter Russ Mitten took the lead on the fourth circuit.

It looked like Mitten was going to speed away to his third win of the season. That changed on Lap 18, when Fred Shipley spun and collected the leader.

Herr lined up fourth on the restart, and it didn’t take him long to make his way to the front. He charged into second on Lap 19 and shot by Gutshall for the lead on the 20th circuit.

“We had a couple of cautions late in the race that tightened us back up,” Herr said. “Russell had a pretty nice lead when he got into trouble with a lapped car. At that point, we fell into line fourth on the restart and watching ahead of us, I was like, ‘Man, if those guys don’t get off the bottom, they are going to get passed.’

“We were rolling around the top pretty well, especially off of three and four. We were getting off there well and the longer it went, the looser they got. It wasn’t too much trouble getting around them.”

Two late cautions didn’t stop Herr’s march. He paced the field and claimed the win over Gutshall by 1.653 seconds at the stripe.

“We paid attention all Summer, and the track definitely changed the last couple of weeks,” Herr said. “Donny, my helper, kept a good eye on the track, as I did, and we learned some stuff.

“We made some changes when we needed to and read the track right, and it fell into our hands. The car was good. It’s definitely been operating the last three weeks.”

Mitten went to the rear after his Lap 18 setback and surged back through the field to finish third. Scott Dellinger was fourth, with Matt Ondek completing the top five.

Steve Davis dominated the field to capture top honors in the 30-Lap FXG Sign and Label, Dickey’s Barbecue 602 Modified main event.

Rick Wegner Jr. started on the pole and led the first five circuits before pulling off during a Lap 6 caution period. That handed the lead to Davis, who started sixth in the field.

There were three more cautions in the event, but Davis never wavered. He sped away over the last 16 laps to take the win by 3.598 seconds. He was followed by Joe Toth, Bobby Watkins, Dakota Kohler, and Matt Yoder.

In Sportsman Modified action, Jordan Henn grabbed the top spot on Lap 6 and led the rest of the way to take the win in the 20-Lap affair.

Craig Whitmoyer started on the pole and paced the field for the first five circuits. Henn made his way to the front by the sixth circuit and survived two cautions to claim the win by 3.826 seconds.

Whitmoyer held on for the second-place finish, with Will Dupree, Joe Toth, and Talan Carter completing the top five.

Tyler Barrick survived a caution-filled main event to win the 600 Xcel Modified feature. He led the final 13 laps in the 15-Lap feature.

Kenny Harris, who led the first two laps, finished second. Geoffrey Sutton, Korey Inglin, and Justin Schrader completed the top five.

The PASS/IMCA 305 Sprint Car feature saw Buddy Schweibinz lead the entire 20-Lap distance for the win. His margin of victory was 3.394 seconds.

Logan Spahr, Josh Bricker, Kristina Pratt, and Roger Weaver completed the top five. There were five cautions during the main event.

Steve Cantwell led the entire 15-lap Classic Car feature, taking the win over Bill Brown Jr., Conner Cantwell, Jim Rost, and Dylan Brown.
