Henderson and Sandvig Kick Off 2022 Racing Season With Top 15 at Devil’s Bowl

Justin Henderson and Mike Sandvig Racing kicked off their 2022 racing campaign at the Devil’s Bowl Speedway last Saturday with the NOS Energy Drink World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series.

In their first event of the season, Henderson came home with a 15th-place finish during the Duramax Drydene Texas Outlaw Nationals.

“It was our first night out and honestly it was just nice to be racing and at the track,” said Henderson. “You never really know what to expect when you are starting a season and getting back into the swing of things, so to come home with a top 15 is all you can ask for.”

Henderson began the evening by timing in 15th quickest in qualifying with a fastest lap of 13.836 seconds. He then finished where he started – fourth – in a heat race to lock himself directly into the A-main event.

“When you are with the Outlaws racing it is so important to time well as those first few laps really can make or break your night,” he said. “If we were just a tad quicker to start the night, we’re likely starting inside the top 8 or so and that’s what you need to be doing when the track is so fast.”

Lining up from the 15th starting position for the A-main, Henderson fell backwards to 17th during the opening laps of the event. He capitalized on a pair of early restarts to move back inside of the top 15, but with the leaders setting a quick pace up front and the field getting strung out, he was unable to gain any more positions and settled for 15th at the completion of the feature.

“We struggled on starts, but the track was lightning fast, and it was hard to make moves forward,” he said.”  Everyone just got so strung out and after that you’re just trying to stay clean and smart and pick up spots when you can.”

While the results were not overly impressive for a team coming off their most successful season together in 2021, Henderson was thrilled to qualify for the A-main against some of the best drivers in the world and to be able to shake off the cobwebs in preparation for what will be a busy 2022 racing season.

“We were running a different motor than we ever have and frankly we were really using the night as a learning experience,” he said. “With us getting rained out and traveling to Texas, a 15th-place finish isn’t exactly profitable from a team management standpoint. But you can’t really put a price on knowledge and that’s what we gained the most.

Henderson and Sandvig will take this weekend off before returning next weekend on Saturday, April 16th, for the 2022 season opener at the Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa. The pair plan to compete regularly at the famed ‘Sprint Car Capital of the World’ and will look to improve on last season’s third-place finish in the standings.

With 23 career victories at the track and another season under his belt behind the wheel of Sandvig’s No. 7 Sprint Car, Henderson believes they are well primed to contend for a championship and multiple wins this season.

“I think we can definitely win a championship if we decided to stay at Knoxville and our goal is to contend every night,” said Henderson. “We’ve got a team capable of being up front week in and week out and I think last season we were a top 15 car no matter where we run. Now we need to be a top 10 car each time we pull into a track and starting off the season with a good run at Knoxville will help get us on our way to being that kind of team.”
