STEVE OWINGS WINS OPENING NIGHT AT TRAIL-WAY SPEEDWAY Long Jr., Walton & Beard also winners

Hanover, PA (4/13/18) - On a day that’s considered unlucky for most, Westminster’s Steve Owings used a bit of luck and skill to take the opening night Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic 358 Sprint Car win.

“It’s Friday the 13th but it isn’t the first time we won on it,” Owings exclaimed in victory lane.

Owings, Trail-Way Speedway’s 358 Sprint Car defending track champion, started the 25-lap race sixth and paced the field with polesitter, David Holbrook, for the majority of the feature. On lap 17, Owings and Holbrook were side-by-side, approaching lapped traffic. Holbrook was able to maneuver around lapped track in an efficient manner and maintained the lead as a caution came out for Gardner’s Jacob Galloway on lap 19.

Owings and Holbrook found themselves side-by-side again on lap 21, but it wasn’t until the final lap of the final turn, that Owings was able to make the race-winning move.

“He was doing an awesome job,” Owings said, “I think when he protected the bottom it just sort of screwed him up because he didn’t have enough motor to pull it off. If he had the same motor I had it would’ve been a different story.”

Owings’s #35 Westminster Transmission, Westminster Lawn, Rodney Valentine, B&D Truck Hoist, SCC Trucking, Rucker Racing Engines, Stonesifer Sanitation sponsored sprint car took the checkered flag with Holbrook finishing in the runner-up spot.

“It’s good to get a win. I’m 50 years old and it doesn’t get old,” Owings continued in victory lane. “I was sleeping in the trailer. I didn’t really do a whole lot. The most I’ve done all night was push a micro around.” Track announcer, John Krall, joked with Owings that the secret to winning is to take a nap before the races, to which Owings jokingly replied, “at my age, you have to.”

Mike Bittinger finished third followed by Cody Fletcher in fourth and tenth starting JB Cunningham Jr. in fifth. Sixth through tenth went to Glenndon Forsythe, Kenny Kuhn, Steven Kisamore, Austen Treuchet and Galloway.

Picking up the first “Big Mike’s Crabhouse Hard Charger” award of the 2018 season, was race winner, Owings. “We picked up a good many of them last year,” Owings commented on earning the $25 certificate. “We’ve got this place figured out. Brad [McClelland] has the set up. Tonight was a little difficult with the track being heavy on the corners. The wind’s blowing and it’s picking the wheels up going down the back straightaway just because of the wind, but I have a lot of laps around here. It helps to have a lot of experience.”

Heat wins went to Owings and Forsythe.

“I just had to be patient, wait for lapped traffic and make my move,” 600cc Micro Sprint race winner, Tyler Walton, said in victory lane.

Walton started sixth and was able to take the lead from polesitter and racelong leader, Kameron Morral, on the 15th lap.

Despite a lengthy delay for an oil spill, Walton was able to jump to a commanding lead on the restart and took the first 600cc Micro Sprint checkered flag of the 2018 season.

Completing the top five were Jim Young, Donahue Motorsports Hard Charger and 14th starter Jesse Snyder, Bradley Weber and Travis Keiser.

Heat wins for the 15 600 Micro Sprints were won by Morral and Zane Rudisill.

Joe Long Jr. claimed the opening night victory in the Mason Dixon 270 Micro Sprint 20-lap feature.

Tenth starting, Steven Cox, was able to take the lead after a caution on the initial lap took several cars out of the first few rows. Cox had a commanding lead for the majority of the feature until stopping in turn two on lap 17.

Long Jr. assumed the lead on lap 18 and went on to claim victory. He was followed by 11th starting, Brent Bull, Tim McClelland, Donahue Motorsports Hard Charger and 17th starting, Zachary Glass, and Keera Dupler completing the top five.

Heat wins for the 20 270 Micro Sprints went to Long Jr. and Bull.

Aaron Beard claimed his first career Precise Racing Products Street Stock win on opening night at Trail-Way Speedway. While this wasn’t technically the first Street Stock win of Beard’s racing career (he claimed a win in the street tire Street Stock class), this was the first win for Beard in the new larger tire Street Stock division.

Gary Warehime finished second followed by Brian Walls, Dalton Myers and Zachary Myers.

Kyle Martin and Mike Walls were the Street Stock heat winners.

Trail-Way is back in action next Friday, April 20, 2018, with the Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic 358 Sprint Cars, Mason Dixon 270 Micro Sprints, Precise Racing Products Street Stocks and the Limited Stocks. This will also be the second consecutive “Student Night,” where students will receive free general admission when they present their student ID at the admission gate.
