Schatz Makes It Three Straight at The Speed Palace in Friday Night World of Outlaws Opener at Port Royal Speedway

PORT ROYAL, Pa- Donny Schatz made the trek into Juniata County Friday night to the Port Royal Speedway with one thing on his mind….win the race.

Trailing current World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars points leader Brad Sweet by -32 points and with only four races remaining on the 2019 schedule, every position counts and every win means even more.

It didn’t hurt that Schatz came in as the two-time defending winner at 'The Speed Palace' either.

Schatz capitalized on a great starting position and a fast racetrack to make it three in a row by picking up the checkered flag and the $8000 prize over a hard charging Anthony Macri and Brian Brown. Schatz led all 30 laps.

"There's nothing I can do out here that can affect what Brad does, so we're just focused on doing the best we can and if we win races, that's as much as I can do on my end of things," said Schatz. "We're focusing on us and our car and if it's meant to be, the points thing will happen."

However, he had to work for it. Starting on the front row alongside of Brown, Schatz got the early jump, with Brown right on his tail at the completion of lap one. Meanwhile, All Star Circuit of Champions points champion and winner of the Tuscarora 50, Aaron Reutzel,  was on the move, going from sixth to third on the opening circuit as well.

Everyone settled in over the next seven laps, with Schatz closing in on lap traffic on lap 8. As he was picking off cars, Reutzel was all over Brown. On lap 12 Reutzel used a slide job  entering turn one to take the runner up spot, only for the pass to be negated after Danny Dietrich suffered a mechanical issue and got into the outside guardrail, ending upside down in the middle of turn one and two and bringing out the red flag..

Dietrich would walk away, but the damage was too much to continue.

With the field utilizing double file restarts, Schatz chose the bottom on the speedway and was able to get the jump on Brown at the return to green flag action.

While Brown settled into second, Reutzel fell back to fifth as he had been running the top of the speedway prior and got stuck on the bottom. Reutzel's misfortune was Macri's gain as he used the top of the speedway to move into third, while seventh starting Logan Schuchart entered the picture and took the fourth spot.

Eight laps later Schatz once again hit lap traffic. While he was trying to stretch his lead, he was also trying to conserve fuel. This allowed Brown and Macri to cut the distance in half.

"With the track being as fast as it was, the guys told me we might have to conserve a little fuel and I was trying to do it when I could," said Schatz. "I really don’t know how much we had left in there. We found the right pace and we tried to make it work."

Four laps later, Macri made his move in turn's one and two on the bottom of the speedway to pass Brown for second. Over the remaining six laps, he slowly chipped away at Schatz's lead.

With two to go, he was breathing down the 10-time series champion's neck. Macri tried the top of the speedway in turn's one and two and then tried the bottom in three and four. However, Schatz was too good.

Coming out of turn four to the flag stand, Schatz took the checkered flag by a margin of .599 seconds over Macri, Brown, Schuchart and Reutzel.

The win was the 11th of the season for Schatz and with Sweet only managing a 12th place finish, he pulled into victory lane a mere 8 points behind him in his quest for his 11th championship.

"We don't have too many more chances to win races coming down the stretch here, so it’s nice to be sitting here in victory lane," said Schatz. "The car was really good and it means a lot to win in front of these great Pennsylvania fans and I hope to see everyone again tomorrow."

For Macri, the finish was an exclamation mark on what has been a very fast second half of 2019 for the Dillsburg, Pa native. The runner up finish was the best career finish in Outlaw competition for him and he believed with five more laps he could've been sitting in victory lane."

'"I really don’t know what to say other than this thing was a rocket ship there towards the end," said Macri. "I felt like after that last caution I could run the car anywhere I wanted out there. I don't know that I've  ever  even finished top-10 against the Outlaws, so a second is pretty darn cool.

Daryn Pittman, Ian Madsen, Gio Scelzi, David Gravel and Brent Marks rounded out the top-10. Marks was also the night's hard charger, gaining 13 spots in the A-Main.

With expected rain in the area, Speedway officials and the Outlaws announced they were moving the start time to 2pm EST for the night two finale. If completed, it would be the first ever two night show for the Outlaws at the Port Royal Speedway and it will pay $15,000 to win.

Williams Grove To Allow 5 x 5 358 Sprint Wing In 2020, Tentative Opening Day Announced

Mechanicsburg - Williams Grove Speedway has begun work on its 2020 schedule of events that will include events for the 358 sprint car division.

The speedway will be allowing the usage of a 5 x 5 top wing during the 2020 season along with the previous standard, and still acceptable 3 x 5 wing.

“Our teams came to us and expressed a desire to be permitted to run the 5 x 5 top wing now that competition elsewhere in the region has made the move to allow them for the 2020 season,” Williams Grove General Manager Justin Loh said.

“The teams just want the chance to remain as competitive as possible no matter where they choose to race and we feel the same way at Williams Grove,” Loh said of the track’s decision.

Williams Grove 358 sprint teams are also reminded that the Chassis Support Bar Rule will be in effect for the division beginning in 2020. 

Williams Grove closed its 2019 season on October 5 with the running of the $65,000 to win National Open for 410 sprint cars, won by Brent Marks of Myerstown.

Opening day 2020 is tentatively set for Sunday afternoon, March 15 at 2 pm featuring a program of 410 sprint car action.

PORT ROYAL, PA – Oct. 21, 2019 – With four races left to go in the 2019 World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series season Donny Schatz has found himself in unusual territory.

The 10-time Series champion – who for the last five years had the championship locked up by now – finds himself 32 points behind Brad Sweet for the points lead heading into the Oct. 25 to 26 Nittany Showdown doubleheader at Port Royal Speedway.

You won’t catch the reigning champion sweating about it, though.

“I’m not worried about championship points,” Schatz said. “I’ve never really worried about who’s behind or ahead. You race the same.”

However, that doesn’t mean he’s not aware of the fluctuating points situation. Schatz had cut Sweet’s lead down from 40 points to 14 after the National Open weekend at Williams Grove Speedway but then fell to 30 points behind after being the victim of two accidents at Tri-State Speedway.

“Weekends like last weekend, yeah, I’d like to go find the guy that drove into the back of me and took me out and put me in this position and beat the shit out of him,” Schatz said. “But that’s just the nature of the beast.

“We got to go win races. When you can’t win races, you’ve got to run second and third. But ultimately, we’re not into seconds and thirds. We’re here to win.”

This weekend’s event at Port Royal Speedway is a good place for Schatz and his Tony Stewart/ Curb-Agajanian Racing team to potentially pick up two more wins before the season ending Can-Am World Finals event. Schatz has won the last two World of Outlaws races at the half-mile Pennsylvania track. He out dueled Sweet for the win at the speedway last year.

The Fargo, N.D. driver has not finished worse than third at Port Royal Speedway since the Series returned to the speedway in 2014. He’s gained eight points on Sweet the last two years at Port Royal and 12 points on him in 2016. If history repeats itself, Schatz could potentially cut Sweet’s points lead in half after the weekend.

Schatz is the winningest driver on half-mile speedways this year with six of his 10 wins coming at half-mile tracks. His latest win at the half-mile Lakeside Speedway was the first win for the new Ford FPS 410 engine – the first time in 21 years a Ford powered World of Outlaws Sprint Car won. Schatz will have the FPS 410 again at Port Royal.

In the first quarter of the year Schatz said he would give his season a C grade. Five months later he said he wouldn’t change the grade. At least for himself.

“My season is a C. The race team, these guys, I’d give them an A,” Schatz said. “They’ve done a phenomenal job all year. I’ve had some moments where I put myself in a bad spot and I didn’t carry the car when I needed to carry the car.

“The car isn’t going to be perfect ever. And a driver has to do a better job and that’s something I’ve been good at over the years. This year, not so much. I can take that on my shoulders. I’m a human being. I’ve made mistakes and I’ve got a lot of things going on that have probably affected me in that light. I’m working on that. So, all you can do is work to be better going forward and that’s what I’m doing.”

In the final four races of the year Schatz said, “it’s kind of go for broke.”

“A long time ago I had a phrase, I’d say win it or wear it,” Schatz said. “We’re going to win it or wear it. It’s going to be that way here on out.”

World of Outlaws Set to Invade for Two Day Nittany Showdown to Close Out 2019

PORT ROYAL, Pa- Port Royal Speedway will close out their 2019 racing season with a two-day visit by the NOS Energy Drink World of Outlaws Sprint Cars Series Friday and Saturday October 25-26 for the Nittany Showdown.

This will be the second consecutive season where the Outlaws will attempt to visit for a two-day event and it’s expected that a large field of cars will trek to Juniata County for a chance to take home the victory and the bragging rights against the best the sport has to offer.

There is a Sunday Oct. 27 rain date available if needed and times are to be determined if needed.

Last year’s event was rained out on Friday night and Saturday night, pushing racing activities to Sunday. It was also the first ever time that the Outlaws sanctioned the Tuscarora 50 due to rain showers cancelling the event earlier in the year.

Ultimately, Donny Schatz took home the $51,000 victory, which was his second consecutive triumph at Port Royal, as he won in 2017 as well.

Past winners in Outlaw competition along with Schatz (3) are Logan Shuchart, Brad Sweet, Ryan Smith, Jason Meyers, Brad Furr, Danny Wood, Doug Wolfgang, Don Kreitz Jr. and Lynn Paxton won the very first visit in July of 1979.

Logan Wagner is the leading Weikert’s Livestock 410 Sprint Car feature at the Speedway in 2019 with five wins to his credit and is the 2019 Port Royal Speedway track champion. He will be looking to defend the local turf along with Lance Dewease (110 career speedway victories), Danny Dietrich, Lucas Wolfe, Anthony Macri, Dylan Cisney and many more.

It is also expected that several other outsiders will make the trek to the Juniata County oval such as Brian Brown (Knoxville Track Champion) and many of the All Star Circuit of Champions regulars as well.

To go along with the PA Posse vs the Outlaws rivalry, the Outlaws points battle is also up for grabs entering the weekend.  Currently Brad Sweet holds a 32-point advantage in the standings over Schatz and a -102 advantage over David Gravel.

Daryn Pittman and Schuchart also have a spirited battle for the fourth spot and currently Pittman has a 40-point advantage over him. Carson Macedo, Ian Madsen, Sheldon Haudenschield, Shane Stewart and Brent Marks, who just picked up the win at Williams Grove in the series most recent visit to the area round out the top 10.

This would be the first career championship for Sweet if he is to hold off Schatz and would make him the first champion other than Schatz since Daryn Pittman won in 2013. A strong run in Central Pa. would do wonders in his quest as the field will be as tough as anywhere and points are crucial.

Friday’s Preliminary event will pay $8000 to win and Saturday’s finale will pay $15,000 to win.

Reserve Seats are still available for the weekend and are on sale through the World of Outlaws website. The entire main grandstand towards turn 1 will be reserved seating and the top five rows of the new grandstand are as well. Everything else is general admission and season reserved seats will be honored for both nights.

There will also be a Cornhole Tournament being held Saturday. It is the 2nd Annual Port Royal Speedway Cornhole Classic. It is rain or shine and will be held in the commercial building right inside the front stretch gates. Registration is from 9:30am to 10:45am and the tournament will start at 11:00 am.



It is double elimination and is a bring your own partner event. If you need a partner, they can try and find you one. Entry fee is $30/team and payout is guaranteed to the top four teams. The event is BYOB (Bring your own beverages and bags. House bags can be provided if needed. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing.

TJ Stutts Picks Up Emotional Win in Open Wheel Madness Finale at Port Royal Speedway

Bard and Zearfoss Also Pick Up Wins, Ken Duke Wins 30 Championship

PORT ROYAL, Pa- When the 2019 racing season started, T.J Stutts wasn't sure if he'd be behind the wheel of a racecar, let alone in victory lane. A grueling off season that saw the Liverpool, Pa.
 native fighting the effects of a neuroendocrine tumor on the tail of the pancreas, Stutts was just happy to be living his life.

However, he kept his head up and he kept working hard. With his kids serving as crew members, Stutts got his health in order and the race team trudged along. Bad luck and a lack of speed made for
 many tough nights at the track.

All the hard work and dedication paid off Saturday night as Stutts picked up his first ever Weikert's Livestock 410 Sprint Car victory at the Juniata County oval in front of a packed crowd on Open
 Wheel Madness Night 3.

"I just had this feeling all week," said Stutts surrounded by family and friends. "I'm not even going to hold back. I'm going to cry. This is special."

But like this season, it didn’t come easy. Stutts had to fend off multiple cautions and a hard charging Logan Wagner and Lance Dewease to bring home to win.


Stutts and Cory Haas led the field to the green flag with Stutts jumping out to the early lead. Danny Dietrich, who started fourth, slid into the second spot on the opening lap as well.

One lap later, Dylan Cisney came to a slow on the backstretch, bringing out the cautionon lap two. Cisney would rejoin the field.

With a return to green flag action, Haas showed his muscle as he ripped the top of the speedway in turn's one and two to pull alongside Stutts down the backstretch. He made slight contact with the
 outside guardrail, but powered underneath Stutts entering turn's three and four to lead at the stripe on lap three.

Dietrich would come to a slow just after the leaders crossed the line and bring out the second caution of the night. He would not rejoin the field.

On the restart, Stutts powered off the top of the speedway and re-took the lead from Haas and opened up a hefty lead. However that would all be erased as Danny Varin flipped over the inside guardrail
 of the front stretch on lap 11, bringing out the red flag. Dan Shetler also was involved with minor front end damage

On the restart, it was Wagner showing his hand. He hit the top of the speedway to take the third position from Ryan Smith before using the bottom in three and four the following circuit to pass Haas
 for second.

With nearly a 1.3 second lead entering lap traffic, Stutts was in command on lap 17. But the lap cars gave Wagner an opportunity to close the gap. Two laps later, Wagner made his move as he dove
 under the leader in turn's three and four. It looked as if he would run away, but a caution for debris of the backstretch negated the pass and once again gave Stutts the lead.

Not only did the caution give Stutts the lead, but it told him that he needed to change lanes on the track.

"Logan showed his nose down there and I was really hoping we didn’t wait too long to move down," said Stutts. "Me and my boys were talking earlier in the night and he asked me when we'd know to come
 off the top. Well I said you never really know and we caught a break with that caution."

Another restart was plagued by a wreck involving Brock Zearfoss and Anthony Macri and when the field took the green flag again, Stutts hit the high side in turn's one and two and used the bottom
 in three and four to thwart any attempt Wagner had to get under him.

Over the next few laps, Wagner attempted to reel in Stutts and he had him in his sights. Meanwhile, Dewease had found something on the bottom of the speedway and had entered the third spot. However,
 Stutts continued to hit his marks and nobody would stop his fairy tale story from becoming a reality.

He would cross the finish line and take the checkered flag by a .790 margin over Wagner and Dewease. Smith and Haas rounded out the top five with Tyler Reeser, Jared Esh, Alan Krimes, AJ Flick and
 Cisney rounding out the top 10.

"I'm just happy to be here man," said Stutts. "I was beginning to think this season might just be a wash. But here we are finishing strong. I can’t explain how much this means to me."

For Wagner, he was happy with the speed he had and even though he didn’t win, he was excited to see the hard work and dedication of Stutts pay off.

"If we couldn't win, I don’t know if there is a guy who deserves it more than TJ," said Wagner. "Everyone knows what he's gone through this year and it’s a family deal, so happy for a fellow competitor
 who works hard."

305 Sprint Cars.

Garrett Bard lead all 20 laps and fought off a hard charging Ken Duke to pick up his second Penns Valley Meat Market PASS/IMCA 305 Sprint Car victory of the season at the Port Royal Speedway.

Nathan Gramley and Bard led the field to the green, with Bard jumping out the lead on the outside of the speedway. The first start of the night was negated by caution.

Duke, who started third, moved into the second position by lap three before another caution halted racing activity.

When green flag action returned, Bard once again ripped the outside of the speedway and opened up a sizable lead. It seemed to be smooth sailing until he hit lap traffic on lap 8 and allowed Duke
 to close the gap.

A caution would once again fly on lap 13 and set up Duke to make a move. On the restart, he tried the bottom, but Bard was too good and pulled away.

Bard would go on to take the checkered flag, his sixth overall in PASS/IMCA action, by .334 seconds over Duke, Nick Sweigart, Jeremi Hanson and Doug Dodsen.

"I wish we didn’t have that last caution as I knew Ken was there," said Bard. "It’s been an amazing season and I'm really thankful to be here."

For Duke, he finished second, but also claimed the Port Royal 305 Sprint Car track championship for 2019.

Brock Zearfoss overcame a rough start to his night that ended in wrecked fashion in 410 Sprint Car action to pick up his first career United Racing Club 360 Sprint Car feature win at Port Royal Speedway.

Brian Carber and Mike Kiser led the field to the green flag with Kiser jumping out to the early lead. An early caution came out for a two car wreck in turn 1.

When the field went back to green flag action, Steve Buckwalter and Doug Hammaker got together, causing Buckwalter go go flipping. Several cars were involved in the back half of the field and all
 drivers walked away safely.

Carber led Kiser to the green flag on the restart, Meanwhile, Ryan Smith was making his trek to the front of the field, entering the top five form his eight starting spot. By lap eight, Smith was
 challenging for the lead and he successfully passed Carber to take over the top spot.

Meanwhile, Zearfoss, who started 12th was lurking. Both Smith and Zearfoss used the extreme top of the speedway in lap traffic.

With three laps to go, Zearfoss finally closed the gap and made his move. He would go on to claim victory over Smith, Carber, Chad Layton and Adam Carberry.

Layton and Josh Weller got together coming to the checkered flag and the race ended under red flag conditions.

"Anytime you can get laps in another division earlier in the night you are feeling really good," said Zearfoss. "This is a nice thing to check off the bucket list and I'm really happy to be sitting
 here in victory lane."

York Haven, Pa. (10/18/19) – Like any 19-year-old kid trying to make a name for himself in a division, Landon Price has experienced the ups and downs in racing.

 One week, he shines with a top five run in PASS/IMCA 305 Sprint Car competition. The next, he struggles and a simple top-10 run is an undertaking.

 Things have started to turn in a more consistent upward direction of late. Price has found speed, and it was on display Friday night at BAPS Motor Speedway, when he charged to the front and captured the 20-lap main event.

“We were getting the hang of it last year, and then this year, we had some stuff happen that put us behind the eight ball,” Price said. “Then toward the end of this season, we started getting the hang of it.

 “It was great. I was lucky to get one at Port Royal, and now we have two. I think we have one of the best teams in this whole deal now.”

 Devin Adams started on the pole but drifted high on the start. That allowed Alex Bright to dive to the bottom of Turns 1 and 2 and grab the lead.

The pace was slowed on Lap 4, when Will Brunson spun on the fronstretch. Price, who started sixth on the grid, took third on the restart and started to close on Adams.

 Bright pulled out to a .729-second lead by Lap 5.  Two laps later, Price slid Adams through the first and second corner to take over the second position.

 Price closed the gap after a Lap 10 caution. On the restart, he tried to slide Bright, but the two made contact. Price didn’t clear the leader, but he drove by coming out of Turn 2 and had the lead going down the backstretch.

 “I slid Nick Sweigart early in the race, and he crossed back underneath me, clean race, and I beat him into three and four,” Price said. “On the restart, I threw one on Alex, and I thought he was going to touch the brake and go back underneath me.

“He stayed wide open. I didn’t mean to race him like that, but I was going for the win. I respect what he has done in Midget racing. It wasn’t on purpose. I could’ve waited, but I was going for the win.”

 That was the race. Price had the faster car and pulled out to a 1.535-second lead by the 15th circuit and cruised to the win over Bright, Adams, Doug Dodsen, and Nick Sweigart.

 Dodsen and Adams were heat winners for the 19-car field. Zach Newlin finished eighth and was crowned the 305 Sprint Car champion at the speedway.

The Central Pa. Legends ran a non-winner’s main event, with Josh Schrum taking the victory in the 20-lap event. He shot into the lead on the first circuit after starting fourth on the grid.

Schrum was harassed throughout the main event by Greg Burd and Chandler Pagnotta, but they couldn’t pull the trigger on a pass for the win. Burd settled for second, with Pagnotta, Zac Smith, and Aaron Updegraff completing the top five.

Adam Campbell topped the field in the 20-lap 4-Cylinder main event, with Gene Wrightstone leading all 20 laps in the Penn-Mar Vintage Car A-Main.

Brock Zearfoss claims his first ever URC win at the Speed Palace

PORT ROYAL, PA – Brock Zearfoss was the class of the field from the drop of the green flag during hot laps on Saturday, October 19 at Port Royal Speedway. His fast times, and consistent laps running around the fence of the speedway landed the Jonestown, Pennsylvania native in victory lane at the end of the 25-lap feature scoring the first URC victory of his career.

Thirty-three cars made the trip to Port Royal Speedway on a beautiful fall Saturday night for the third Open Wheel Madness and one of the final races of the 2019 Capitol Renegade United Racing Club season. Once again, many drivers such as Zearfoss, Ryan Smith, Steve Buckwalter, and Lucas Wolfe, competed in “double duty” for the weekend racing in both the 410 division and in URC competition. The track seemed to be in perfect condition, and Zearfoss made it known early that he was going to be a tough car to beat when he was the only car to dip into the 16 second bracket during hot laps.

Brian Carber and Mike Kiser led the field to the green flag for the 25-lap URC feature event. Carber pulled out to an early lead with Kiser, and Josh Weller behind him. The caution would fly for Tyler Ross who got together with another car and went into the wall coming to a stop in turn 1. This restart would then cause havoc on the entire back half of the field bringing out a lengthy red flag. Doug Hammaker and Steve Buckwalter were running inside the top 10 and got together on the front stretch sending Buckwalter violently flipping and a pile up being formed behind him sending more cars on their roof. Involved in the accident were Buckwalter, Hammaker, Curt Michael, Danny Varin, Jake Eldreth, Ryan Stillwaggon, Troy Wagaman Jr., and Joe Trenca. Fortunately all drivers would get out of their cars under their own power and walk away from the accident.

Carber led Kiser to the restart with point leader Chad Layton, and Weller close behind. Ryan Smith, who got a win early in the season at Port Royal with URC, had been making his way up from the eighth starting spot and was soon in the top five. On lap 8, Smith made the move on Carber and took over the lead. It seemed as though Smith might have the race wrapped up but lurking in the background was Zearfoss who redrew the 12th position in the redraw and was now up to second. Smith and Zearfoss both ran the top of the racetrack, inches from the fence weaving in and out of lapped traffic. “It was hard to pick and choose your lines” said Zearfoss after his win, “I was pretty confident in what we had, I knew running Ryan down our car was really good”. It was in lapped traffic that Zearfoss was finally able to sneak past Smith with 3 laps to go. Zearfoss would go on to win his first URC feature event of the season while chaos ensued on the final lap when Layton and Weller, both fighting hard for the fourth place finish, got together sending the man second in points into the turn 4 wall and onto his roof. Josh got out of his car and was ok after the incident.

“Anytime you can get laps on the racetrack before you race another division is always better”, Zearfoss said about running the 410 feature earlier in the night, “we had a really good race going – really exciting in traffic”. Zearfoss also said that getting his first ever URC win was a “nice thing to check off on the list – it’s exciting”. The KSE Hard Charger for the night went to Adam Carberry who improved twelve positions after starting 17th and making his way up to a 5th place finish. Heat race wins went to Zearfoss, Weller, Buckwalter, and Michael respectively. Troy Wagaman Jr. was the winner of the B-main.

The Capitol Renegade United Racing Club is back in for the final time in 2019 at Bridgeport Speedway for the Big Track Classic – Midge Miller Memorial on November 8 and 9. It all comes down to this as Chad Layton has extended his lead to 92 points over last year’s champion Josh Weller. This is a race you do not want to miss as we will be crowning our 2019 champion.

Gravel wins at Lake Ozark Speedway, his 10th win of the year with Jason Johnson Racing

Jason Johnson had a black book of goals he’d like to accomplish. One was to promote a race.

On Saturday night at Lake Ozark Speedway it was checked off Johnson’s list. His widow, Bobbi Johnson, promoted the Jason Johnson Classic with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series.

The event started with rain but had a storybook ending.

Like a wave rising in the ocean before crashing down, the sea of people filling the grandstands simultaneously rose to their feet and applauded as David Gravel piloted the Jason Johnson Racing No. 41 car to Victory Lane.

Family, friends and team members – all with smiles and some with tears – flooded Victory Lane to congratulate Gravel and Johnson on the victory – reminiscent of Gravel’s Knoxville Nationals win in August.

“Just couldn’t have been a better night,” said a jubilated Gravel. “We’ve had two weeks this year that are storybook weeks. To get this done and win tonight… it might look like it’s fixed, but it isn’t. Sheldon (Haudenschild) made me work for that race.”


The Watertown, Conn. driver was fast all night, winning his Drydene Heat race – holding off a hard charging Haudenschild to do so – and finishing fourth in the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash – won by Jason Sides, who also held off Haudenschild for the win.

When the 41-lap Feature when green Sides rocketed ahead of the field and threw his King Racing Products No. 7S car to the high side. He committed to the line in his pursuit for the win. If someone was going to pass him the bottom was their only option.

Haudenschild followed in line with Sides, riding the high side, trying to hunt him down. Behind them, Gravel worked his way by Brian Brown for third on Lap two and reeled in the top two every lap.

Sides got loose off turn two on Lap seven, allowing Haudenschild to close to his tail tank and Gravel to charge toward them both.

When the trio reached turn three Gravel slung his Mesilla Valley Transportation No. 41 car to the bottom of the track, sliding by Haudenschild and Sides for the lead. Gravel powered in front of them off turn four to officially take the lead on Lap eight, while Haudenschild also snuck by Sides to take second.

The battle was now Gravel versus Haudenschild. Both favored the cushion around the 1/3-mile speedway. Haudenschild’s NOS Energy Drink No. 17 was utilizing it better, though. He caught Gravel on Lap 14 and dove underneath him in turn three to steal the lead away from him.

Haudenschild led the next 11 laps, with Gravel keeping pressure from behind, before a caution spoiled the Wooster, Ohio driver’s night.

On the restart with 17 laps to go Haudenschild slid over the cushion in turn two and Gravel pounced. He charged underneath Haudenschild down the backstretch and sailed his car into turn three, gapping Haudenschild by two car lengths.

“Being on the outside I kind of pinched him (Haudenschild) a little bit,” Gravel said. “You’ve got to do those things to win races. I think I just had a little bit of an advantage on him on the double-file restart and was able to get the lead.”

Haudenschild kept Gravel in sight for the rest of the race but wasn’t able to put together another strong enough run to catch him.

“I would have liked to have raced in traffic a little bit more,” Haudenschild said. “I think it mixes it up and made a little bit more possibilities. When we were in clean air we were just ripping around there and waiting until we got traffic to get anything.”

Logan Schuchart had his own exciting race, charging from 11th to third – his second podium finish in-a-row.

“There in the beginning it was pretty interesting, we were battling back there with Brad (Sweet) and Donny (Schatz). That’s something you don’t want to get in between,” Schuchart said. “It was a good race. We were able to get up there on some restarts, pass some cars when we needed to.”

Sweet and Schatz – who are first and second, respectively, in the championship points ­­– battled around each other most of the night. Sweet had the better night, racing from 12th to fourth, while Schatz raced from 14th to eighth. Sweet is now 32 points ahead of Schatz with only four races left this season – only two before the World Finals.

Gravel’s win was his 10th of the year – first at Lake Ozark Speedway – and 49th career World of Outlaws win.

With Gravel and Schatz having 10 wins and Sweet having 16, it’s the first time since 2000 that there are at least three drivers with 10 or more wins in the Series.

“To hit double digits this year is great,” Gravel said about his win total. “It’s a hard feat to do on the World of Outlaws tour. For us to do that, it feels awesome.

“This is for Jason’s family. Put a smile on their faces tonight and hopefully for the whole week coming up.”

Bobbi Johnson called Gravel and the JJR team a “dream team” with how well they have meshed this year and the success they’ve had. Their victory helped put a period on the storybook ending for the inaugural Jason Johnson Classic – a big goal checked off Jason’s list.

“Tomorrow when you sit back and realize and think about all of the man hours and all of the time and all of the help and preparation, there’s a whole team that put on this deal and stood behind me,” Johnson said. “Just to feel like I checked off one of Jason’s things he always wanted to do… he had a black book and there’s a couple of things in there that’s not checked off, so that’s what I’m trying to do next.”

VICTORIOUS ONCE AGAIN: DONNY SCHATZ WINS WITH FORD AT LAKESIDE SPEEDWAY, CUTS INTO POINTS LEAD

Schatz puts a Ford powered World of Outlaws Sprint Car back in Victory Lane for the first time in 21 years

When Ford wanted to win Le Mans against the unstoppable Ferrari team it turned to legendary car designer Carroll Shelby, his team and his ace driver Ken Miles to get the job done.

Spoiler: They won.

A similar mentality was used when Ford wanted to return to Sprint Car racing with a new 410 engine, after a more than 20-year absence in the sport. It turned to NASCAR champion Tony Stewart, his team and his ace driver Donny Schatz.

Friday night at Lakeside Speedway, for the FVP Platinum Battery Showdown, Schatz brought a Ford powered World of Outlaws Sprint Car back to Victory Lane for the first time since August 26, 1998 when Jeff Swindell won at Southern Oregon Speedway.

It was the new Ford FPS 410 engine’s third appearance in the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series – Schatz finished on the podium in his first two races with it.

“It’s pretty rewarding,” said Schatz about winning with the new Ford engine. “Sometimes you have to do things in life that are off the beaten path. That’s what this whole program is. They got a lot of dedication to it. Tony (Stewart) does. And what Tony asks us to do we do. Here we are.

“Rick (Warner, Schatz’s former crew chief who helped develop the FPS 410) has put a lot of time and blood and sweat and countless sleepless nights on it and to bring it out and to have two podiums at Williams Grove and a win tonight is huge… It’s going to be a live and learn experience. Tonight, it was a live on it. The next night we might be learning. But they did a great job and that’s what we’re here to do, have fun and win races with it.”


 Schatz and his Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing had to fight for the win all night. He finished second in his Drydene Heat race to Logan Schuchart, who was about half of a second faster than everyone else. Schatz then finished fifth in the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash and had to change a motor after.

The motor wasn’t at fault for the change, Schatz said. It wasn’t sealed properly and leaked oil.

With a new FPS 410 installed for the Feature, Schatz put its full potential on display throughout the 30 laps.

The beginning of the race was plagued with multiple cautions for accidents and poor restarts. Brian Brown, in the FVP No. 21 car, led the field through it all. Daryn Pittman, David Gravel, Logan Schuchart, Brad Sweet and Donny Schatz battled amongst themselves for position in the short runs between cautions.

Schatz made his way from fifth to second by Lap 10.

A reg flag for Matt Juhl flipping on Lap 12 brought out an Open Red, allowing teams to fuel their cars and make adjustments.

When the Feature when back green Schatz didn’t waste time testing the limits of his new engine to pass Brown for the lead.

Brown hung on to the high side of the track through turns one and two, while Schatz searched for grip low. What he found allowed him to hammer the throttle and exit the corner side-by-side with Brown.

They drag raced down the backstretch and remained in line through turns three and four. However, Brown couldn’t match the lightspeed launch Schatz got off turn four. The Toco Warranty No. 15 shot to the lead on Lap 13.

Brown, of Grain Valley, Mo., was hungry for another hometown win, though. Continuing to favor the top line, he built momentum off turn two and charged to the outside of Schatz down the backstretch. They again raced side-by-side through turns three and four, but the FPS 410 continued to conjure remarkable speed off the corner.

Schatz took the lead and ran away with it. He found himself more than a second ahead of Brown a few laps after passing him.

Schuchart eventually charged his way to second by Lap 20 and Sweet moved into third by Lap 27. Time was running out to catch Schatz, though. Lap traffic became a factor in the closing laps, but before either driver could try to use it to their advantage a caution came out for Ian Madsen slowing in turn four.

When the green flag flew again, Schatz was gone. The 10-time Series champion sprinted away from the field and had almost a second lead over Schuchart when he crossed the finish line.

“I would’ve liked to see what would have happened if we kept going or had some lap traffic,” Schuchart said. “This is a great team. An awesome year. We would’ve liked to have gotten the win… But still a great night.”

Sweet’s third-place finish allowed Schatz to chip away at his points lead. The Fargo, N.D. driver is now 24 points behind Sweet, of Grass Valley, Calif., with five races left this season – three before the World Finals in November.

“We’re happy with a podium run,” Sweet said. “We were just a little bit off and fighting a few things. We’ll take a podium with the NAPA Auto Parts car and move on to tomorrow night.”

Schatz’s victory was his 10th of the year – 293rd career Series win – and first win in almost a month.

“These guys, it’s incredible what they do,” Schatz said about his team. “The race car was awesome. Yeah, we got to make changes to it for the extra power and a little bit extra weight, but they do an awesome job. It’s great to finally get a win again.”

Port Royal Speedway to Serve Up Open Wheel Madness 3 in Final 410 Tune Up for World of Outlaws URC 360 Sprints and PASS/IMCA 305 Sprints Fill Out Card

PORT ROYAL, PAa- Port Royal Speedways returns this week for the final Open Wheel Madness event of the season! Open Wheel Madness 3 will feature the Weikert’s Livestock 410 Sprint Cars, the United Racing Club 360 Sprint Cars and the final points race of the season for the PASS/IMCA Penns Valley Meat Market 305 Sprint Cars.



Entering the weekend’s madness, Logan Wagner has already wrapped up his second consecutive Weikert’s Livestock 410 Sprint Car Championship. This event is also not a points event for the 410 division. Wagner leads the division with 5 wins this season as well.



This will be the final chance for drivers to get track time and prepare for the NOS Energy Drink World of Outlaws two-day visit next weekend. With the Outlaws on tap and many tracks done for the season, you can expect a high car count and several invaders to chase the $4000 paying to the winner.



Other winners at the track this season include Aaron Reutzel, Trey Starks, Kyle Reinhardt, Anthony Macri, Jeff Miller (3), AJ Flick, Jared Esh, Dylan Cisney (2), Lucas Wolfe (2), Lance Dewease (2), Danny Dietrich (2), Blane Heimbach and Ryan Taylor.

Also, on the card will be the third and final visit of the URC 360 Sprint Cars. 410 regulars Ryan Smith (April) and Kyle Reinhardt (July) picked up victories in the previous two visits to the Speed Palace for the series while pulling double duty action.



With only three remaining races on their 2019 schedule, Chad Layton enters the event with a 75-point advantage over second place Josh Well and a _165 advantage over third place Curt Michael. Austin Bishop (-323) and Jason Shultz (-651) round out the top five. Expect several drivers to once again pull double duty as well.

Finally, the Penns Valley Meat Market PASS/IMCA 305 Sprint Car will wrap up their Port Royal season with their final points event of the season. Ken Duke currently holds a 65-point advantage over Devin Adams followed by Nick Seigart (-70), Jonathan Jones (-75) and Zach Newlin (-95) in the top five.



Duke and Sweigart lead the division with two wins a piece this season while Adams, Landon Price and Garrett Bard also own victories at the speedway. The 305 sprint Cars are coming off an exciting weekend where Sweigart pulled off a last lap pass of Newlin and Doug Dodson to claim the victory in the 8th Annual Blue-Collar Classic. Kassidy Kreitz also added the excitement and won a non-qualifiers feature on the final turn as well.



This weekend is also the annual Port Royal Fall Foliage Days Parade. The local tradition will begin at the fairgrounds at 1pm and will close down 8th street and the main street through Port Royal until approximately 1:30 pm. So, plan accordingly. All track gates and pit gates open at 1pm with 410 Time Trials set to begin at 4:00pm EST.

David Gravel aiming for 50 wins with Midwest doubleheader on the horizon Intense championship points battle moves to Lakeside Speedway, Lake Ozark Speedway

KANSAS CITY, KS – Oct. 15, 2019 – David Gravel and Jason Johnson Racing have put together an impressive first year together – nine wins, 20 Quick Times and currently sit third in points. With six races to go this season Gravel has a specific goal he’d like to accomplish.

“I’d like to win one more race, hopefully two,” said Gravel, who has 48 career World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series wins. “I’d like to get to that magical number fifty for me in my career. That’s a goal that’s really important to me. I hope to do that.”

He could reach that goal this weekend with the World of Outlaws on Oct. 18 going to Lakeside Speedway for the FVP Platinum Battery Showdown and on Oct. 19 returning to Lake Ozark Speedway for the Jason Johnson Classic.

Both races will play a big part in the World of Outlaws’ championship battle, which Gravel still has a part in. He and second-place Donny Schatz had bad luck at Tri-State Speedway and lost points to leader Brad Sweet – Gravel is now 102 points behind Sweet and Schatz is 30 points back. However, just one weekend can create a large swing in the points, as Schatz had cut Sweet’s points lead in half after the Williams Grove Speedway doubleheader before going to Tri-State.

Gravel has finished third in points the last three years – driving for CJB Motorsports. He has a solid hold of the position for the remainder of the year and could find himself finishing third for the fourth year in-a-row. There is a slim chance for him to catch Sweet without a lot of luck, but Schatz is only 72 points ahead of him.

“My goal is to keep the front two guys honest,” Gravel said. “You know, we have an extremely slim chance of making anything happen, especially with the rainout [at Terre Haute]. I mean, just to be in the conversation at the end of the season with a first-year team, with a team like this, it’s just been really cool. We’ll just try to finish out strong. Be competitive every night.”

He and JJR have unloaded with speed all season long, being fastest in practice 11 times and collecting 20 Quick Times, so far. There’s a combination of elements that have helped the No. 41 car be fast early on in the night, said Philip Dietz, crew chief for JJR.

“Our engines have to run good. They have to be fueled right,” he said. “Just our car balance in general has to be really, really good to start the night off.”

Gravel will be going for his first win at Lakeside Speedway and Lake Ozark Speedway this week. He finished 14th at the half-mile Lakeside Speedway last year. It’s a track he said he usually struggles at. However, he and JJR have been one of the most dominate teams on half-mile tracks this year. They won at Calistoga Speedway, Knoxville Raceway and twice at Williams Grove Speedway.

“We’ve been really good on big tracks, so I’m hoping to go there and qualify good and just keep doing what we’re doing,” Gravel said.

Lake Ozark Speedway may be his next best opportunity to pick up another win before the end of the season. He finished second the last two races there.

The Eldon, Mo. track is also a home track for JJR. Their shop is eight miles away from the speedway. Gravel knows a win at the 1/3-mile track would be special for the team, especially with the event being the Jason Johnson Classic – which will pay $10,410-to-win due to an added bonus by FK Rod Ends.

“That’s a track I’m pretty confident at and excited to go back to,” Gravel said. “To win it for Bobbi (Johnson), and for Jason’s race, that would be very cool. Definitely looking forward to that. They’re going to have a lot of friends, family and sponsors there, so going to be a pretty cool moment.”

The 2019 Champion Racing Oil/RM Racing Lubricants Central PA Sprint Cars season is winding down with only one race on the books for the weekend. The race was at BAPS Motor Speedway Saturday October 12th and Chase Dietz came away with the win for his 2nd win of the year.

York Haven, Pa. (10/12/19) – Chase Dietz is still in his first season with the Rick Lefever-owned team and doesn’t have a lot of experience at BAPS Motor Speedway.

Those two factors probably didn’t help expectations Saturday night at the York Haven facility. Still, this team is starting to jell and find speed.

That was obvious in the 30-lap main event. Dietz fell back to third, but he made a late-race charge to earn a confidence-building victory worth a $5,000 payday.

“This was huge,” Dietz said. “We had a pretty good year at Lincoln. We would be consistent for a little bit and then fall off. We messed around with a few things the last couple of weeks, racing away from where we are comfortable [at Williams Grove].

“To come here where we don’t get to run too often and feel as good as we did and race as well as we did, it’s a great thing for us.”

Billy Dietrich beat Dietz into Turn 1 at the drop of the green flag, but he didn’t stay there for long. Fourth-place starter Freddie Rahmer ripped around the bottom of three and four to pass both Dietz and Dietrich to take the lead at the completion of Lap 1.

Dietz took second from Dietrich, as Rahmer opened up a 1.208-second lead by the fifth circuit. Just as the lap was scored, Dylan Norris spun and stopped at the exit of Turn 2. During the caution period, Hunter Mackison stopped on the frontstretch.

Rahmer pulled away on the restart, leaving Dietz to dice with Brian Montieth for second. There was also a three-car battle for the fourth position, with Ryan Smith, finally, slipping past Brock Zearfoss and Dietrich.

Brian Montieth and Dietz were back-and-forth for the second position on Lap 13. Montieth, finally grabbed the position coming off the fourth corner.

Montieth was the fastest car on the track with 10 laps to go. With Rahmer pinned on the bottom, Montieth used the top to close to within .338 seconds by the time Lap 16 was on the board. Rahmer countered and moved to the top, opening up a .684-second lead on Lap 18.

But, Rahmer’s race came to an abrupt end on Lap 20. He shot into Turn 1 and misjudged the corner, slapping the fence and suffering significant damage to his car.

Rahmer’s misfortune gave Dietz new life. He stalked Montieth on the restart and made his move on Lap 21, sliding Montieth through the first and second corner. Montieth didn’t give and ducked under Dietz coming out of the second corner to maintain the top spot.

Dietz pulled the same move on Lap 24. Montieth tried to duck back under off the corner, but Dietz was able to carry enough speed off the top of Turn 2 to wrestle the top spot away.

“It was just more being patient," Dietz said. "As we got to lapped traffic, it was more intense between lapped cars and knowing where to go. I figured, at one point, we were going to have to move around. When Freddie had that incident, it gave me another chance.

“[Brian] peeled off and tried to run the middle. As soon as I saw him go to the top, I was going to be even better. It gave me more open air and allowed me to drive into the corner like I needed to. I kept working it and working it and knew I would have a good chance. It came down to being patient and getting there when I could.”

Dietz couldn’t afford to be patient once he got the lead. Smith was on the charge and disposed of Montieth for second coming out of Turn 2 on Lap 27.

Smith was 1.354 seconds back when he took second. He chopped the margin down to .705 seconds on Lap 28 and was on Dietz’s rear coming to the white flag.

But, lapped cars didn’t play out in Smith’s favor. Meanwhile, Dietz nailed the bottom to get past a back marker in Turn 2 and took the win by .594 seconds at the stripe.

“I saw him in lapped traffic a couple of times,” Dietz said. “I thought he was almost going to get me out of four, because we got tight between lapped cars.

“At the end, I could see his shadow, but I wasn’t sure what was going on. I felt pretty good on the bottom to middle, so I just committed there and was going to make him drive around me. You’ve got to adjust to the track but also adjust to what you need. It was just great to go back and forth with those guys.”

Smith settled for second, with Montieth earning a third-place finish. Brock Zearfoss and Lucas Wolfe completed the top five in the main event.

“One [lapped car] went one way, and the other didn’t go the way I thought he was going to,” Smith said. “That’s just racing. That’s probably the best we have been here all year in the 410.

“It’s good to race to the front from seventh and have a shot at it. We just didn’t get it done. We had a shot, just lapped cars didn’t fall my way. All and all, second, another second, and another second.”

Chad Layton took the lead from Ryan Smith and went on to score the victory in the 360/358 Challenge featuring the United Racing Club.

Smith got the jump on Layton at the start, but it didn’t last long. The United Racing Club point leader went to the outside of Smith in Turns 1 and 2 on Lap 8.

But, Layton didn’t get away. Smith took the lead back on a Lap 9 restart. Six laps later, Layton regained the point and never looked back. Freddie Rahmer also passed Smith for second on Lap 15 and settled for second. Smith, Brock Zearfoss, and Lucas Wolfe completed the top five.
