STEVE OWINGS LANDS IN VICTORY LANE FOR FIRST 358 SPRINT WIN of 2021

 

HANOVER, PA -  Steve Owings wasn’t too pleased about his performance behind the wheel at Trail-Way Speedway this season.

The car has been fast. So has the driver, but Owings felt he needed to make less mistakes to take advantage of all that speed.

On Friday night, Owings did just that. He carved his way to the front from eighth and was flawless in claiming the 25-Lap 358 Sprint Car main event. It was his first win at Trail-Way this season.

“It’s been a hell of a long time,” Owings said. “It’s been driver error. We probably gave two of them away. I hit the frontstretch wall a couple of weeks ago ... it’s just bad luck or running her too hard.

“I just need to calm down a little bit. We’ve got a fast, fast car. I got to thank the guys this week. We did a lot of work. I mean, we pulled three motors, changed two cars ... we did a lot of work.”

Continued Owings, “I got old Betsy back. This Triple X has probably won 15-20 races here. Jay Krout did a hell of a job fixing it. This is the car we screwed up the first night we were here, and we brought it back, and it shows it can go around here.” 

Kenny Kuhn grabbed the early lead over David Holbrook and Nat Tuckey. By the time Lap 4 was scored, Owings was up to fourth and stalking the leaders.

Owings wasn’t just happy waiting. The Westminster, Md., slipped under Holbrook for second by the fifth circuit and disposed of Kuhn for the lead one lap later with a low move through Turns 1 and 2. 

Last week’s winner Mason Chaney brought out the first caution of the event on Lap 6, when he spun in Turn 4. There was no chance for the rest of the field, as Owings pulled out to a 1.653-second lead within one lap. 

There was one more caution, but it didn’t help the competition. Owings was on cruise control the rest of the race and took the victory by a hefty 3.707 seconds.

“Eventually your luck is going to go your way,” Owings said. “We’ve had a fast car, which is good, but we just haven’t had any luck. I’ve had good luck here for the last four or five years. We never even hurt a tire or a wing, and this year we’ve been through two or three brand new ones. 

“I was almost ready to burn this uniform. I haven’t had a designed uniform since I’ve been running, and between this and getting T-Shirts for the guys, I was like, ‘Those T-Shirts are going to go first. Then, the uniform, we’re going to burn that.’” 

Holbrook got past Kuhn for the runner-up spot but had nothing for Owings. Tim McClelland, Kenny Kuhn, and Mike Bittinger completed the top five. Bittinger was the Big Mike’s Crabhouse Hard Charger. 

In the Mason Dixon 270 Micro Sprint feature, Craig Myers won his second 20-Lap event of the season at Trail-Way.

Myers started on the pole and led every lap. The Chambersburg, Pa., driver diced in and out of traffic with his brother Cory and came out on top by 1.223 seconds.

Joe Long Jr. followed the Myers’ to the stripe in the final rundown. Steve Daron Jr. and Bill Laughman completed the top five.  

Robbie Carroll captured the JWE Remodeling and Roofing Limited Stock main event. It was her third win of the season at the speedway.

Jason Chronister led the first six circuits. Meanwhile, Carroll and Chad Weaver were side-by-side for second behind the leader. 

Carroll and Weaver split Chronister in Turn 4. By the time they hit the line on Lap 7, Carroll was in the lead. 

Cody Klinedinst got into second with two to go but couldn’t catch Carroll. Terry Hartlaub, Rob Nicklow, and Chad Weaver completed the top five.

Jeff Paulson, of Honey Brook, and Lebanon’s Hugh Wright claimed wins. Robbie Carroll came back and won one of two Enduro races. Lee Redman won the second.
