HANOVER, PA - Cliff Brian Jr. had to adjust a little bit Friday night when he rolled into Trail-Way Speedway for a Wingless Super Sportsman event.
The environment is a little different. Brian is used to racing at Path Valley Speedway, which is like putting fireflies in a jar and shaking it up. As for Trail-Way, it’s a bigger venue with more speed and room to move.
It didn’t seem to matter to Brian. He carved his way to the front, passing some of the best in the division and negotiating lapped traffic with relative ease to capture the 25-Lap main event.
“It definitely made things easy,” Brian said of running Trail-Way. “Not when you’re trying to catch the guy ahead of you, but I could focus on what I was doing instead of trying to pass people.
“So, it was nice. This is a fun place. I like it. I’ve been good all the times we’ve come here, and it’s a fun place.”
Not worrying about traffic was the easier part, but the start of the main event was almost something Brian couldn’t overcome.
Brian and Levi Hippensteel made up the front row. When the field barreled into Turn 1, Brian got in hot and floated toward the wall. That allowed Hippensteel to take the lead and dropped Brian to fifth.
Hippensteel led Matt Cisney by .233 seconds on Lap 3. Three laps later, he stretched his lead to .782 seconds as he started to catch the back of the field.
The caution was displayed for the first time on Lap 9, when Kevin Gutshall stopped on the frontstretch. Brian, who took fourth on Lap 4, used the restart to slip past Derek Sheaffer for the third spot.
Brian tried to get past Cisney on Lap 13, but he couldn’t make his car stick. It wasn’t until Lap 22 that he finally took over the second position.
“It definitely didn’t have as much stick as it did in the heats,” Brian said after the victory. “I went in full speed, and it didn’t stick.
“I was fast, I just couldn’t find it until the last seven laps or so. It was fun. I don’t even know what to say.”
Hippensteel looked like he was headed for the win. That changed when the lapped car of Luke Lenker rode the middle in front of the leaders on the final circuit.
Brian took advantage. He got a run on the leader in the final two corners and pulled off a last-lap pass on Hippensteel to score the .154-second victory.
Hippensteel settled for second, with Cisney taking third. Steve Wilbur and Jason Failor completed the top five.
In 600 Micro Sprint action, Daniel Bair, of Camp Hill, Pa., stormed from fourth to the front to take top honors in the 20-Lap main event.
Bair caught a small break at the start of the feature when pole-sitter Joseph Bowling wasn’t able to start. That moved Bair to third, and he took over second on the opening lap behind leader Jude Siegel.
Siegel led the first five laps before he started to slow. Bair sailed by one lap later, while Siegel stopped on the backstretch on Lap 7.
Bair wasn’t challenged the rest of the way. He took the victory by 1.223 seconds over Rodney Westhafer. Bradley Weber, Randy Kunkle Jr., and Travis Keiser completed the top five.
Travis McClelland, of Littlestown topped the field in the Central PA Legends presented by Harvest Chapel feature.
McClelland led all 20 laps but was never challenged despite having heavy hitters like Bill Diehl and Stephen Wurtzer behind him. He went on to claim the main event by .588 seconds at the stripe.
Diehl, Wurtzer, Blaine Leppo, and rookie Owen Dimm completed the top five. Chris Transeau was the Big Mike’s Crabhouse Hard Charger, advancing from 23rd to 12th.
Robbie Carroll started eighth and charged to the front to capture the JWE Roofing and Remodeling Limited Stock feature.
Tom Spangler led the first four circuits before the caution was displayed. Carroll, who was running second, blasted by on Lap 5 and led the remaining laps.
It wasn’t easy, though, as Ricky Weaver Jr. and Cody Klinedinst were all over Carroll at the finish. The margin of victory was .244 seconds. Chad Weaver and Chad Martin completed the top five.
